University of Iowa Health Care STEM Education participated as part of University of Iowa SySTEMs of Discovery booth during the Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council Day at the Iowa State Fair, which engaged kids and adults in hands-on science, technology, engineering and math related activities, showcasing various STEM programs across the University of Iowa. UI Health Care staff and UI Carver College of Medicine students engaged visitors at the Fair in learning about laparoscopic surgery and anatomy by showing them a plasticized human heart, brain and lungs and letting visitors try their hand at surgery via our laparoscopic surgery trainer. UI Carver College of Medicine student volunteers included Kelsey Saddoris, Elise Hill and Karl Hamouche.

Kindergarten-6th grade students visited UI Health Care to engage in hands-on interactive experiences relating to the medical field. Students learned how STEM fields relate to medicine and health care. Students also had the opportunity to learn about and touch a human heart, lungs and brain. Students then engaged in hands-on activities with current UI Carver College of Medicine students. Activities included learning about sun safety, laparoscopic surgery, nutrition, casting and x-rays.

5th and 6th grade students from Hoover Elementary attended the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine for a day to experience hands-on activities with current medical students. The students got the chance to experience doing physical exam skills, make UV bracelets and learn about skin cancer awareness, casting and look at x-rays, check out human plastinated specimens and do some body mapping, as well as experience a "surgical center" and test out their visual-spatial skills on a laparoscopic trainer.
