We were part of the "grain for Jews" immigration wave orchestrated by Jimmy Carter (bizzarely, most Russian Jews in the US are Republican, but that's a story for another photo). During those days Russian immigrants spent several months in Italy awaiting visas from the US and other countries of their destinaton. After many years in the US my parents recalled these idyllic months fondly, but during the actual time in this paradise they were in full-on freakout mode about our future.
I am almost 11 and I remember this very clearly. It was hotter than hell, and later on that day I passed out from the heat in the middle of the Rome round market. I am at the beginning of a very long and very grumpy awkward stage; here I am most probably grumpy because I wanted to stay back in Ladispoli, the town we lived in during those months, and spend the day on the beach with my friends (other Russian immigrant kids) instead of being dragged along to Rome.
