Chemical Engineering Professor Max Stein and Brian Iezzi, Post-doctoral Researcher at Materials Science and Engineering Department analyze the fabric with photonic fibers woven into it at the University of Michigan’s North Campus Research Center in Ann Arbor, MI.

Less than 15% of the 92 million tons of clothing and other textiles discarded annually are recycled—in part because they are so difficult to sort. Woven-in labels made with inexpensive photonic fibers developed by a University of Michigan-led team could change that.

Ordinary tags often don't make it to the end of a garment's life—they may be cut away or washed until illegible, and tagless information can wear off. Recycling could be more effective if a tag was woven into the clothing, invisible until it needs to be read. This is what the new fiber developed by Shtein's team could do. It harnesses the optical effects that enable the shimmering brilliance of butterfly wings, potentially being totally discreet in the optical spectrum yet easily read by automated recycling sorters.
