Emir Kusturica stated: “I lost my city [Sarajevo] during the war. That is why I wished to build my own village. It bears a German name : Küstendorf. I will organize seminars there, for people who want to learn how to make cinema, concerts, ceramics, painting. It is the place where I will live and where some people will be able to come from time to time. There will be of course some other inhabitants who will work. I dream of an open place with cultural diversity which sets up against globalization.”

Auf der von Touristen unendteckten Insel gibt es unzählige Wasserfälle. Das klare Wasser stammt aus der unbesiedelten wilden Berglandschaft, höchste Erhebung 1340 Meter. Die gesamte Insel ist vulkanischen Ursprungs mit mehreren noch aktiven Vulkanen. Die Philippinen liegen auf dem Ring of Fire.
Die Provinz gehört zu den ärmeren und weniger entwickelten Regionen der Philippinen. Die Menschen leben vom Fischfang und der Landwirtschaft. Die Küstendörfer in der Nähe des Pazifiks sind immer wieder Wetterextremen ausgesetzt. Taifune werden durch den Klimawandel immer stärker und unberechenbarer. Touristen haben diese wunderschöne Insel in der Samar See noch nicht so recht entdeckt. So ist Biliran für Reisende immer noch ein Geheimtipp.
