It depicts the moment when Samson tears open the jaws of a lion, representing Russia's victory over Sweden in the Great Northern War, and is doubly symbolic.[17] The lion is an element of the Swedish coat of arms, and one of the great victories of the war was won on St Sampson's Day. Perhaps the greatest technological achievement of Peterhof is that all of the fountains operate without the use of pumps. Water is supplied from natural springs and collects in reservoirs in the Upper Gardens. The Samson Fountain is supplied by a special aqueduct, over 4 km in length, drawing water and pressure from a high-elevation source.

The expanse of the Lower Gardens is designed in the formal style of French formal gardens of the 17th century. Although many trees are overgrown, in the recent years the formal clipping along the many allees has resumed in order to restore the original appearance of the garden. The many fountains located here exhibit an unusual degree of creativity. One of the most notable designs is entitled 'The Sun'. A disk radiating water jets from its edge creates an image of the sun's rays, and the whole structure rotates about a vertical axis so that the direction in which the "sun" faces is constantly changing.

The same bluff that provides a setting for the Grand Cascade houses two other, very different cascades. West of the Grand Palace is the Golden Mountain (Золотая Гора), decorated with marble statuary that contrasts with the riotous gilded figures of the Grand Cascade. To the east is the Chess Mountain (Шахматная Гора), a broad chute whose surface is tiled black and white like a chessboard. The most prominently positioned fountains of Peterhof are 'Adam' and 'Eve'. They occupy symmetric positions on either side of the Sea Channel, each at the conjunction of eight paths.

Kotlin Island, Russia

This model is based on Square Pixel Tessellation, and is closely related to my earlier Composition of Squares I.

 

I folded this model from a square of thin Unryu paper, and as you can easily notice, the fold didn’t go very well.

On my first attempt at using this paper (folding another similar model), I tried to fold it without any preparation and failed miserably: it was just too soft for geometric folding which requires sharp and precise creases. On my second attempt, whose end result you can see here, I used MC (methylcellulose), which made the paper crispier and allowed me to finish the model at all. All the notes below pertain to Unryu treated with MC.

 

This paper is very thin, but thickness varies somewhat. This is easily visible against a back-light, and even against a light background. Individual pieces of kozo, which create the beautiful pattern this paper is famous for, can locally make the paper much thicker than elsewhere and make precreasing precisely even harder than it already is.

 

And precreasing is difficult indeed, since even after treatment with MC this paper is quite soft and does not like being folded in straight lines. Since the thickness and grain direction are not uniform, precreased lines tend to sway to the sides, and it is hard to maintain a constant direction. Perhaps if I had folded the complete grid, the result would have been better, but with only selected lines precreased, the precrease ended up skewed which is visible in the finished model. The pattern of kozo fibers going in different directions also masks creases very well, especially on the side without MC. On one hand, this is good since the construction lines are well hidden and do not distract the viewer. On the other, their visibility is so poor that it’s hard to find reference points when folding, which once again reduces precision.

 

Compared to pre-creasing, the collapse went relatively well (the collapse is rather simple in this model, though). The paper’s memory is fine, but certainly not very good, and you can see in the finished model that the creases have a tendency towards unfolding.

 

So, in the end, what can I say about Unryu? It’s a beautiful type of paper, but its folding properties are poor, at least for tessellations. Without MC, it was unusable, with MC it fared poorly. Possibly, it’s better for other kinds of models.

 

But there is a way of using Unryu which makes it suitable for tessellations. If you glue it onto a sheet of another paper, you can have the best of both worlds: Unryu’s looks and the other paper’s folding properties. I used Unryu this way in my Kotlin Logo model, and it turned out great. Thin Unryu is so thin that it doesn’t affect the base paper’s folding properties much, except for the spots with thicker kozo strands. One culprit is that due to Unryu’s translucency, you will be able to see some of the paper beneath it, so you have to find a matching color. In the case of Kotlin Logo, where I needed duo paper with contrasting colors (blue and orange), I had to put a third layer of paper, blue tissue paper, in between the two outer layers, since otherwise I would be able to see orange between the blue Unryu fibers.

 

If you are willing to invest a little time in making such multi-tissue or sandwich paper, Unryu can become your friend even for tessellations. It’s a difficult paper to work with, but its beauty makes even a big time investment potentially worthwhile.

The Peterhof Palace (Russian: Петерго́ф) is a series of palaces and gardens located in Petergof, Saint Petersburg, Russia, commissioned by Peter the Great as a direct response to the Palace of Versailles by Louis XIV of France. The dominant natural feature of Peterhof is a 16-m-high bluff lying less than 100 m from the shore. The so-called Lower Gardens (Nizhny Sad), at 1.02 km² comprising the better part of Peterhof's land area, are confined between this bluff and the shore, stretching east and west for roughly 200 m. The majority of Peterhof's fountains are contained here, as are several small palaces and outbuildings. East of the Lower Gardens lies the Alexandria Park with 19th-century Gothic Revival structures such as the Kapella.

Atop the bluff, near the middle of the Lower Gardens, stands the Grand Palace (Bolshoi Dvorets). Behind (south) of it are the comparatively small Upper Gardens (Verhnyy Sad). Upon the bluff's face below the palace is the Grand Cascade (Bolshoi Kaskad). This and the Grand Palace are the centrepiece of the entire complex. At its foot begins the Sea Channel (Morskoi Kanal), one of the most extensive waterworks of the Baroque period, which bisects the Lower Gardens.

The Grand Cascade is modelled on one constructed for Louis XIV at his Château de Marly,[15] which is likewise memorialised in one of the park's outbuildings.

At the centre of the cascade is an artificial grotto with two stories, faced inside and out with hewn brown stone. It currently contains a modest museum of the fountains' history. One of the exhibits is a table carrying a bowl of (artificial) fruit, a replica of a similar table built under Peter's direction. The table is rigged with jets of water that soak visitors when they reach for the fruit, a feature from Mannerist gardens that remained popular in Germany. The grotto is connected to the palace above and behind by a hidden corridor.

The fountains of the Grand Cascade are located below the grotto and on either side of it. There are 64 fountains.[16] Their waters flow into a semicircular pool, the terminus of the fountain-lined Sea Channel. In the 1730s, the large Samson Fountain was placed in this pool. It depicts the moment when Samson tears open the jaws of a lion, representing Russia's victory over Sweden in the Great Northern War, and is doubly symbolic.[17] The lion is an element of the Swedish coat of arms, and one of the great victories of the war was won on St Sampson's Day. From the lion's mouth shoots a 20-metre-high vertical jet of water, the highest in all of Peterhof. This masterpiece by Mikhail Kozlovsky was looted by the invading Germans during the Second World War; see History below. A replica of the statue was installed in 1947.

Perhaps the greatest technological achievement of Peterhof is that all of the fountains operate without the use of pumps. Water is supplied from natural springs and collects in reservoirs in the Upper Gardens. The elevation difference creates the pressure that drives most of the fountains of the Lower Gardens, including the Grand Cascade. The Samson Fountain is supplied by a special aqueduct, over 4 km in length, drawing water and pressure from a high-elevation source.

The expanse of the Lower Gardens is designed in the formal style of French formal gardens of the 17th century. Although many trees are overgrown, in the recent years the formal clipping along the many allees has resumed in order to restore the original appearance of the garden. The many fountains located here exhibit an unusual degree of creativity. One of the most notable designs is entitled 'The Sun'. A disk radiating water jets from its edge creates an image of the sun's rays, and the whole structure rotates about a vertical axis so that the direction in which the "sun" faces is constantly changing.

The same bluff that provides a setting for the Grand Cascade houses two other, very different cascades. West of the Grand Palace is the Golden Mountain (Золотая Гора), decorated with marble statuary that contrasts with the riotous gilded figures of the Grand Cascade. To the east is the Chess Mountain (Шахматная Гора), a broad chute whose surface is tiled black and white like a chessboard. The most prominently positioned fountains of Peterhof are 'Adam' and 'Eve'. They occupy symmetric positions on either side of the Sea Channel, each at the conjunction of eight paths.

Fort Constantine, is one of many fortresses from the 19th century. It lies directly in the main channel to St. Petersburg.

 

Fort Constantin was a coastal artillery battery that covered southern waters of the fortified city of Kronstadt, Russia. The city is located on the Kotlin Island, Gulf of Finland, Baltic Sea. Currently the fort has no military use, the structures are in disarray, and the transport and tourism company 'Third Park' tries to develop the territory as a tourist destination.

The Gulf of Finland is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 11 crew member on the international space station. This strongly oblique view shows the Gulf of Finland and Lake Ladoga in the sunglint of late afternoon. The image was taken from the station when the position of the craft lay north of the Caspian Sea, approximately 2,500 kilometers to the southeast on the Russia–Kazakhstan border.

 

The Neva River appears in sunglint, connecting Lake Ladoga to the gulf. Although not visible, St. Petersburg—the home town of Sergei Krikalev, space station commander when this picture was taken—lies on the Neva River delta. In this view taken with a powerful 400 millimeter lens, sunglint even reveals the causeways to Kotlin Island in the gulf—including some of the details of their construction.

 

Oblique views reveal marked layers of gray haze generated by air pollution, a common sight over Western Europe. Pollution also renders the bright glint areas a copper color.

In Crew Earth Observations (CEO), crewmembers on the International Space Station (ISS) photograph the Earth from their unique point of view located 200 miles above the surface. Photographs record how the planet is changing over time, from human-caused changes like urban growth and reservoir construction, to natural dynamic events such as hurricanes, floods and volcanic eruptions. A major emphasis of CEO is to monitor disaster response events in support of the International Disaster Charter (IDC). CEO imagery provides researchers on Earth with key data to understand the planet from the perspective of the ISS. Kotlin is a programming language for the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) which is gaining in popularity. Having used it for some time, I'm quite happy about the results and I held a Kotlin birds-of-a-feather session at the recent Devoxx.PL conference in Kraków, Poland.

 

Since the logo is quite simple and based on geometric shapes representing just the letter K, I couldn't resist trying to design it in origami. Lacking duo paper with the right colors, I used a three--layer sandwich paper (Tant-tissue-Unryu).
