After the day's switching has been completed in Hanover, PA, the local crew parked their single GP on the "middle track" while the Rockrunner's power awaits the call to duty on the "inside track", which will come later that evening. Kodak Ektachrome E100, Pentax MX.
The tailings from Woodhorn and Ashington Collieries were regularly dumped into the sea. Frankie and other sea coalers like him, made a business out of collecting the lumps of coal which washed up on the beach at Lynemouth, bagging it and selling it to the local houses. Amtrak train #40, the perpetually late Floridian, slowly crosses the Neabsco Creek trestle on CSXT's RF&P Subdivision on July 22, 2025. The Floridian travels from Chicago, IL to Miami, FL as train #41 and returns as train #40. It's name is a revival of sorts of an early short lived Amtrak train that was a replacement for the PRR's old South Wind which traveled from Chicago to Miami via a more inland (and much more direct) route which Amtrak initially didn't include in their original schedule from 1971. CSXT's L136 meets Yorkrail's RJ2 just west of Broadway in Hanover, PA on August 15, 2025. Yorkrail uses "trackage rights" over CSXT's Hanover Sub to reach a small stub of theirs that was formerly the Pennsylvania Railroad's Frederick Branch which has one customer on the west side of Hanover. Beyond that customer, the track has been abandoned all the way to Taneytown, MD since the late 1970s when Yorkrail predecessor Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad gave up on the trackage. In 1989, CSXT sold the former Western Maryland York Subdivision to Emons Industries who owned the "Ma & Pa" at the time. It didn't take long for Emons to incorporate a new non-unionized railroad called Yorkrail to operate the newly acquired York Sub and abandon most of the parallel but redundant Frederick Branch, keeping small segments here and there to serve the remaining customers. To the right in this photograph the Frederick Branch can be seen among the weeds. It has been dormant for decades. The line used to cross the Hanover Sub on a diamond about a half a mile behind the locomotives here. The diamond was deemed unnecessary and was removed in August 2019 almost 6 years to the day of this photograph. Kodak Ektachrome E100, Pentax MX.
