Good thing there's an alarm button. Creationists, for example, could press it when they start to feel persuaded that evolution makes sense after all.

The term "collective memory" denotes the aggregate of memories, knowledge, and data that a social group holds, which is intrinsically linked to the group's identity. The term "collective memory" in English and its French counterpart "la mémoire collective" emerged in the latter half of the 19th century. Maurice Halbwachs, a philosopher and sociologist, further developed this concept in his 1925 work, «Les cadres sociaux de la mémoire». Both expansive and intimate social collectives can create, disseminate, and inherit collective memory.

Contrary to the term "collective memory," which is somewhat ambiguously defined yet generally accepted, the notion of "collective memories" is inherently problematic. Memories are the results of the individual acts of recollection, making the idea of "collective memories" paradoxical. Сontemporary diffusion models utilize vast amounts of often unidentified data, including historical and personal old photographs, vintage postcards, and other kinds of publicly circulating images. These models may be seen as involved in the prompts-driven singular acts of remembrance, producing images that paradoxically represent "collective memories," something otherwise unfeasible and ultimately, non-existent.

This book is a documentation of process, exploration, experimentation, and knowledge acquired during the research and creations that resulted from the senior thesis course on tattoo aesthetics in design culture.

-----

Using one's body as a canvas for artwork has been a growing trend in the United States. Art on the body has always fascinated and held people's interest. This way of communicating a message and of personal expression has spread into mainstream society, and also had developed into an art form. With a greater demand for this type of aesthetic, technological advancements, as well as medical advancements, have paved a smoother course for the future of tattoos in design culture.

Not only have tattoos become more welcomed into mainstream society, they have greatly contributed to design culture by reestablishing, enhancing, and creating new styles of communication.

The collaboration of the movement in technology, art, and social structure, is making tattoos a changing entity in the design world. From advertisements, television shows, to furniture design and interactive body art, society is finally opening up to this medium of aesthetic art. Tattoos are changing the design world as we know it, and personal expression through the art of ink on skin will continue to evolve as a way of expressing self beauty.

The Traveling Greenhouse is about sharing knowledge and food production skills between schools across the region. Local educators use the greenhouse for a growing season and teach students how to cultivate foods in our Alaskan climate. Schools and community partners are left with the resources and inspiration needed to continue growing food in greenhouses and outdoor gardens long after the greenhouse wheels out of town and heads out on the Alaska Marine Highway to the next eagerly awaiting community.

These photos show the community of Kake using the greenhouse and also building raised garden beds to expand their growing capacities.

The ‘Ecosystem-based Adaptation South’ project seeks to help the Seychelles, Nepal and Mauritania to adapt to climate change, in part by restoring natural habitats across all types of ecosystems. In the Seychelles, on-the-ground ecological restoration will rehabilitate 29 hectares of mangrove and wetland forests, thus providing natural flood barriers.
