Fox Kits At Rest

Canon 50D and 500F4 with 1.4 XTC

In my walk yesterday, I saw an adult cross fox dive into a hole that looked like a den. I watched for an hour or so only to see the head peek up and disappear the moment I moved my camera.

So today I went to the same spot and found a single kit. This little one came up and sniffed my shoe at one point. This shot is just after he sniffed my shoe.

paper covered clipboards are so fun - I just saw some with vintage paper at a local shop. I covered this collage with contact paper (included in this month's kit) and now it's really nice and sturdy and durable! love it.

Rampax is from a series of six 5" plastic robots made by CGGC in Italy. They were sold in kit form and had to be assembled. I don’t know when they were first produced, but I was given the individually boxed Rampax in 1985.

The six robots were not completely different, but shared components such as arms, legs and feet. These pieces were all interchangeable and it seems that some were randomly packed out, so the makeup of specific robots was inconsistent. Each robot had two distinct, spring launched weapons. The long weapon for the bent right arm protruded from the elbow and hooked in place; pushing up on the hook launched the weapon. The left arm had a mechanism in the shoulder that held the weapon in place while the arm was down, but launched the devise when the arm was raised.

The robots were also distributed in France by a company named Remus, which sold them in two sets of three. The French packaging was quite different from the Italian boxes that I’ve seen, but the plastic parts were still molded in Italy. Again, I have no idea of the original time line for these, but I obtained an incomplete set in 1991.

Five of the robots - Drakis, Torang, Fergus, Argon and Rampax - kept their names for both Italian and French issues. The sixth one, originally Satan in Italy, was renamed Mirox in France. I guess that the French didn’t want kids playing with the devil.

In the days before our throw-away society, people actually repaired things when they tore or broke. This is a repair kit for plastic beach balls and play rings. Interestingly, Kestral manufactured inflatable swimming pools and such, so the company didn't expect their products to be tossed when they developed a leak. Imagine!

While shooting this series, I know something not bad would come up. Third one. More to come (sorry).

This is the kit I use for almost all my outside macro shots. I use the same Canon PowerShot SX40 HS camera for photographing birds without the Raynox and flash. It really is a Swiss-Army knife of cameras, giving an equivalent of a 640 mm telephoto for the birds then, with the few extras, focussing down on the tiny features of a fly! The Raynox I use outside is almost always the DCR-150. I own a DCR-250 but it is a harder to get a good focus than the 150 which is close enough for almost all the subjects I find in the garden. The flash was an eBay previously-owned bargain Canon 270EX II which I use in Manual mode set to a max of 1/8 and usually less (adjusted by trial and error). The Pringles tube "snoot" is simply the tube with a slot cut at one end for the flash and cut obliquely across at the other end to direct the light diffused through a piece of kitchen roll onto the subject. Gaffer tape holds the kitchen tissue paper in place and is also stuck around the edges of the cut slot so it doesn't scratch the flash gun. The Pringles tube is held in place with an elastic band. I have settled down to using manual settings of f/8 and a high shutter speed which gets slowed to 1/250 with the flash, though the flash is much quicker than that and is effective at freezing a lot of wobble. Behind the camera in the photo you can see the small clump of Apple Mint which has been a very effective attractor of flies, wasps and bugs this year.
