After a night of stay in Kirishima Onsen town, known for many hot springs at the almost south end of mainland Japan, we wanted to go see Mount Kirishima. We started to drive north from Kirisima Hot Spring (Onsen) then the weather started to be foggier and foggier.
Kirishima, "Island of Fog", is a mountain, not an island.
We totally learned why that name was come up in the land where all the Japanese myths were born... It gets so foggy here often that the mountain looked like an island floating in the ocean of fog...
Unfortunately we had to give up on going further and higher to the Mount Kirishima that day. However the city of Kagoshima is QUITE fun too, so no regrets! Travels always have detours, right?

The area of Kirishima is a highly active volcanic zone and famous for its many natural onsen. (hot spring) In some places hydrogen sulfide leaks from the ground. You can feel the earth being alive.

A sub-temple of Kennin-ji, only open for a few weeks each year in spring and autumn. Beautiful Kirishima tsutsuji (azaleas) to see there but the light was harsh for photos.

KIRISHIMA NATIONAL PARK

Nagaoka Tenman-gu Shrine locates in the western part of Kyoto and has probably one of the most extensive Kirishima azaleas in Kyoto.
As a former resident, Sugawara no Michizane, a 9th century aristocrat and politician, settled the current place of the shrine, where he enjoyed poetry, waka, and gagaku, a court music, with Ariwara no Narihira, a 9th century aristocrat and poet. The pond and gardens were later extensively developed by Hachijo no miya Toshihito Shinno, an aristocrat and poet, in the mid 17th century.
Kirishima azaleas were fully blooming when I arrived. It was on time! The shrine is especially celebrated by the locals of the Nagaoka kyo shi. The extensive azaleas and greens in contrast are proudly exhibited, which lasts only for a week within a year. What a luxury...!

Kirishima azaleas were beautifully blooming at the shrine. It was the best timing when I visited there, so that I am sharing this wonderful moment with you!! It is said that the stone bridge was designed intentionally not to go straight, so that evil spirits cannot go forward. This is typical at gardens of shrines in Japan.
While serving with the US army in Vietnam, I took my week of R&R (Rest & Recreation) in Japan, departing from Danang Airbase on Thanksgiving day. While in Japan, I took the train south from Tokyo to Kagoshima City, in Kyushu Province near the southern tip of the country, where I visited an American family. My host took me on a sightseeing trip into the mountains to the north of Kagoshima City, where we paused for this lovely autumn scene.
