Taken in the Room of the Last Supper, a second-story room in Jerusalem that commemorates the "upper room" in which Jesus shared the Last Supper with His disciples. It is located directly above the Tomb of King David and near the Abbey of the Dormition on Mount Zion. This room was built in the 12th century, but may have been built on or near the actual site of the Last Supper.

The town of South Molton in Devon is an ancient settlement. It is listed in the Domesday Book as one of the places in Devon directly held by the king. There is also a reference to four priests holding a virgate, about thirty acres, of land from the king in alms. From this one may surmise that there was already a church here at this time.

The current church dedicated to St Mary Magdalene can be found in the middle of the town. At its core the church dates from the 14th and 15th centuries but has been restored at various occasions since then; particularly in the nineteenth century. Between 1825 and 1829 the church was enlarged and galleries were installed, which have since been removed. In 1864 the nave roof was raised and the clerestory inserted under the supervision of C.E. Giles.

There are nineteen windows in the church and all contain stained glass of various dates. Three of the windows cannot be photographed, one is in the tower and two are behind the organ.

This picture shows the three minor figures from the South window of the South transept. The figures represent Zachariah, father of John the Baptist, King David and Isaiah. The scrolls these are holding carry the text from Luke i : 69 which is part of the Benedictus. The window dates from 1881 and was made by John Hardman and Co. of Birmingham.

I have stitched this picture together from three separate images. The order of the figures allows the text on the scrolls to be read in sequence. The text reads 'He hath raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David.'

Winchester Cathedral

Window dedicated to Jane Austen (d1817) by Kempe, 1901. Cartoons previously used in Newcastle Cathedral and St Alban's Abbey.

Jane Austen's Memorial Window

Jane's Memorial Window is situated in the North Aisle.

Details of the window:

A memorial window bidding us, in Latin, to remember in the Lord, Jane Austen who died on July 18, 1817.

It was erected in 1900 by public subscription and was designed by C.E. Kempe.

It consists of two rows of three figures. In the head of the window is Saint Augustine whose name, in its abbreviated form, is Saint Austin.

The top central figure is David playing his harp.

The central figure in the bottom row is St. John holding a book displaying on an open page the first words of his Gospel: "In the beginning was the Word".

The other two figures in the window represent the sons of Korah mentioned in 2 Chronicles 20:19. Korah and his sons are traditionally associated with Psalms 42 to 49, Psalms 84, 85, 87 and 88.

The figures carry scrolls on which are quotations form these psalms indicated the religious side of Jane’s character.

Bethsaida is much older than the New Testament village, but also has a side that dates back to Old Testament times. Ruthie said that it has some connection to Absolom, rebellious son of King David, but I don't remember what it is, nor can I find any information about it on the internet.

East Window, 1936.

Memorial Window to Edward George Lancaster (1840-1934) of Keresforth Hall.

By Archibald Keightley Nicholson (1871-1937) of London.

To the Glory of God the glass in the east and west windows was inserted in memory of Edward George Lancaster Esquire of Keresforth Hall by whose generosity this church was built.

The East window dated from 1936 and, like the west window, is by the artist Archibald Nicholson. It is a five light window with tracery lights above. The window is full of detail including the Coat of Arms of the Diocese of Wakefield, Westminster Abbey with St Edward the Confessor, St Paul, Isaiah holding a book, King Davide with a harp and the Venerable Bede also holding a book. The main light shows the Crucified Lord hanging from a living tree.

By Archibald Keightley Nicholson (1871-1937) of London.

AK Nicholson was the brother of Sir Charles Nicholson and a pupil of Henry Wilson. He was thus initially skilled in crafts, including metalwork, and was largely self-taught as a glassmaker. After his death his studio continued under GER Smith and HL Pawle.
