Illustration from "La Sainte Bible : Ancien Testament . . . / Compositions par J.-James Tissot"; with preface by Antonin Gilbert Sertillanges (1863-1948), introduction by Maurice de Brunoff (1861-1937) and the translation into French of Isaac-Louis Lemaistre de Saci (1613-1684). 2 volumes. Paris: M. de Brunoff & Cie, 1904. The illustrations were originated by James Tissot (1836-1902) who sketched as he read Scripture.
The edition, of which 561 copies were printed, contains 360 mounted colour, black-and-white and duo-tone illustrations in the text and 40 plates in three states: sepia-tone, partly hand-coloured, and finished coloured state. The plates are protected with captioned tissue-guards. The paper size is 15.75 x 13 ins; image size varies (circa 8.5 x 5.5 ins).
The paintings for all 400 Illustrations were based exclusively on the complete sketches (the inspiration being entirely Tissot's). The first 200 illustrations covering the Book of Genesis through to the story of Jephthah's daughter in the Book of Judges were painted by Tissot. The last remaining 200 illustrations were painted after Tissot's death in 1902 by Henri Bellery-Desfontaines, Auguste François Gorguet, Charles Hoffbauer, Louis van Parys, Michel Simonidy and Georges Bertin Scott.

The Te Deum illustrates four lines in the Caticle of that name:
The glorious company of the Apostles praise thee. The goodly fellowship of thee Prophets praise thee: the noble army of martyrs praise thee: The holy church throughout the world doth acknowledge thee.
In a hot, parched land, En Gedi is a canyon oasis overflowing with water. It's beautiful, and was the favorite retreat of Kind David and his band. Saul sought him there, and David, hiding in a cave, could have easily killed him when he went in, unaware. The incident highlights the difference in the character of the two men. See the cave elsewhere on this site (Flickr.com/BrianMorley, in the "Israel" album).

Near the town of Michmash (MIK-mas, or, MIK-mash), this pass is about 8 miles outside Jerudalem, in the region of the ancient tribe of Benjamin.
It was on one of the dlffs in the distance that Jonathan (son of King Saul) and his armor bearer climbed up and defeated a Philistine garrison, beginning an eventual greater victory over their forces (1 Samuel 14). One of the rocks is named Bozes (possibly, "slippery") and the other is Seneh ("Thorny").
In Isaiah 10:28 the prophet pictures the advance of Assyrian forces attacking Jerusalem, and said that they left their baggage at Michmash, expecting to retreive it later. Their campaign, however, met with disaster (Isaiah 37:36).
When the Israelites returned from captivity under Zerubbabel (Ezra 2:27; Nehemiah 7:31) 122 men of the town of Michmash are mentioned.
Later, Jonathan Maccabeus had his headquarters in Michmash.
In modern times, British General Allenby used Jonathan's ancient tactic of climbing the cliff to defeat the Turks.
Over the centuries, this pass has been strategic because of it's proximity to Jerusalem, and the geography that leads to it.

The magnificent cathedral at Chartres, dubbed the "Acropolis of France" by Rodin, still beckons pilgrims far off across the endless cornfields of the Beauce.
Chartres attracted pilgrims at an ealry date, first of all to Our Lady of the Underground, then to the cathedral which Bishop Fulbert built in the 11th century but which was burnt down in 1194.
Recontruction began immediately and was completed in the short space of 25 years. The new Notre Dame Cathedral raised the Transitional Gothic style to new levels of achievement.
Gothic verticality reigns both inside and out, but the architect wisely kept two Romanesque masterworks, the Old Bell Tower of 1145, and the Royal Doorway of the west front with its long-bodied but intensely expressive sculpted figures.
The North Porch entrance is flanked by two sets of figures. The one shown here depicts (from l to r) Melchizadech, Abraham and Isaac, Moses, Samuel, and David as king.
