King David, 1878. Oil on canvas. (1826-1898) Hammer Museum

Repro luggage label. King David Tower Hotel in Jerusalem.

David Kalakaua (1836-1891) - King of Hawaii this sculpture in Hilo - I can't explain the big black spot on his forehead. You could compare this picture to my picture of the head of another statue of King David

This is a close-up of the metal sign on the King David's statue that says "King David" in Hebrew, Russian, and English.

Pre-Raphaelite stained glass in Llandaff Cathedral, Cardiff. This window was dedicated in 1869 to Isabella Mary White of Dowlais. It is the work of Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris. The main figures (left to right) are King David, St Stephen and Samuel (all the work of Burne-Jones). Below these are New Testament scenes by Burne-Jones and Morris. The angels high in the tracery are by William Morris.

Jh. Dieses Fresko stellt König David mit der Harfe dar.

En Gedi is the largest oasis along the western shore of the Dead Sea. The area was allotted to the tribe of Judah, and was famous in the time of Solomon (Josh 15:62).

Ein Gedi served as a place of refuge for King David as he fled from Saul. 1 Samuel 23:29 says that David "dwelt in strongholds at En Gedi". In a cave near here, David cut off the corner of Saul's robe (1 Sam 24).

Unfortunately, on the day we were here we were not able to go down close to the image pictured, but had to view it from an overlook. There had been flash flooding due to overnight rain, and on a previous date two people had been washed into the Dead Sea when this happened (one survived and one didn't).

Detail of Tree of Jesse, which illustrates the theme of Old Testament prophecy pointing to Christ. The vine frame directly above King David is occupied by the Virgin holding the infant Christ. She is a beautiful figure, drawn by a highly skilled hand. She stands in a graceful S-shape and is clothed in a blue mantle with draped folds. Chalgrove Church, Oxfordshire, England.

David Kalakaua (1836-1891) - King of Hawaii this sculpture in Honolulu - "David" is about as un-Hawaiian a name as you could imagine as their language doesn't use the letter D. Another picture of another statue of King David is here

Israel's image may be tarnished with religious conflict. But while actually there, you'll see how harmonious the world can be with the world's major religions coexisting in one place. Jerusalem is living history. Tel Aviv - a modern metropolis resembling South Beach. You'll find signs in English, Hebrew and Arabic.

Although faded, the paintwork on the statues is said to be original.

If you only visit one place in Burgos make it the Cathedral. It is the best example along the Camino of medieval genres and art styles. If you take your Pilgrim’s Passport you can avail of the 50% discount entrance fee for pilgrims.

It is surprising that the Gothic style of Burgos Cathedral is coherent, as it was constructed over a period of three hundred years. The cathedral was founded by Fernando III on 20th July 1221 and was not consecrated until 1260. However the first mass was celebrated in 1230, mainly due to the fund raising and building management of Bishop Mauricio. The bishop died in 1238 before even the ceilings were closed, but the style of the building was his vision which lived on.

West Facade: the three portals in the facade are late 17th century, and have been described as mutilation of the building, this though did not affect the story and impression the facade communicated. The eight kings in the middle arcade reminded people of the link between royalty and divine power. However directly above the kings arcade is the statue of the Virgin, by Juan de Colonia, illustrating how even the monarchy were inferior to the church. The central door was for royalty when they entered in a procession. The four statues level with the top of the door are of Bishop Asterio, Bishop Asterio, Alfonso VI, and Fernando III.

South Facade: this is the main tourist entrance. The statue between the door is Bishop Mauricio, above are the 12 Apostles, with Christ in Majesty presiding over all, surrounded by scribes passing on the word of God.

The north portal again has Christ in Majesty, this time being beseeched by the Virgin and St John interceding for humanity. This theme continues with images of divine judgement, the weighing of souls, and sinners being punished.

The interior of the cathedral is massive and the layout map paid for by your entrance fee will be helpful. The cruciform floor plan, the shape of a crucifix, is 106 meters long. The three naves are separated by massive columns and are surrounded by fifteen chapels, the cloisters, and the Bishop’s Palace. You could easily spend a day exploring the inside of the cathedral. The main altar retable, dates from 1562, is Renaissance and narrates the life of the Virgin. The tomb of El Cid and his wife are in the transept after being re-interred in 1921 for a second time. The choir is 16th century with Renaissance lateral stalls. At the end of the stalls is the bishop’s throne, and in the centre of the choir is the 13th century tomb of Bishop Mauricio.

Illustration from "La Sainte Bible : Ancien Testament . . . / Compositions par J.-James Tissot"; with preface by Antonin Gilbert Sertillanges (1863-1948), introduction by Maurice de Brunoff (1861-1937) and the translation into French of Isaac-Louis Lemaistre de Saci (1613-1684). 2 volumes. Paris: M. de Brunoff & Cie, 1904. The illustrations were originated by James Tissot (1836-1902) who sketched as he read Scripture.

The edition, of which 561 copies were printed, contains 360 mounted colour, black-and-white and duo-tone illustrations in the text and 40 plates in three states: sepia-tone, partly hand-coloured, and finished coloured state. The plates are protected with captioned tissue-guards. The paper size is 15.75 x 13 ins; image size varies (circa 8.5 x 5.5 ins).

The paintings for all 400 Illustrations were based exclusively on the complete sketches (the inspiration being entirely Tissot's). The first 200 illustrations covering the Book of Genesis through to the story of Jephthah's daughter in the Book of Judges were painted by Tissot. The last remaining 200 illustrations were painted after Tissot's death in 1902 by Henri Bellery-Desfontaines, Auguste François Gorguet, Charles Hoffbauer, Louis van Parys, Michel Simonidy and Georges Bertin Scott.
