This is the Wal-Mart Supercenter located at 254 Cassidy Boulevard in Pikeville, KY. It originally opened as a replacement store for an old Wal-Mart on the northern part of town in November 1997. The store was remodeled slightly in 2002, and once again in the summer of 2008. It received the new "Walmart" logo in 2009. It also received a minor re-paint sometime in 2013.
This is the former Dawahares department store building located at 272 Main Street in downtown Whitesburg, KY. This store, the second in the Dawahares chain, originally opened in 1935 by Serur F. Dawahare and his family after the success of the first Dawahares store in nearby Neon, KY some years before. Despite the fact that many newer, modern stores (whether they were discount stores (like Wal-Mart and Kmart) or full-featured department stores (such as JCPenney and Goody's) had opened in the region starting in the mid-to-late 1970s, Dawahares had perservered until the mid-to-late 2000s, when they were in dire financial straits. This store, along with many others, had closed around 2008 due to the chain's bankruptcy. Up until around 2016, some local groups use it as a display for special events (such as the Mountain Heritage Parade), when a small group of businessmen decided to open a combination restaurant/gift shop called Dawahare 109 (a nod to Dawahares’ history).
This is the Wal-Mart Distribution Center located at 3701 Russell S. Dyche Memorial Highway in London, KY. It started operation in 1997, and was immediately credited for bringing additional jobs to the London/Corbin/Somerset area and ushering in growth for the area, which is still true today due to London's location along Interstate 75 between Lexington and Knoxville, TN. It also gave Wal-Mart another regional hub for many of its products.
This is the Kmart store located at 3889 North Mayo Trail in Pikeville, KY. It originally opened on August 2, 1979 and was expanded in the early 1990s. It is also the only store in Pikeville to have never closed or relocate to a newer location. This Kmart is one of the largest in Eastern Kentucky! It closed in December 2016, and reopened as a Rural King farm supply store on September 21, 2017.
This is the former Kroger supermarket located at 102 Town & Country Lane within the Town & Country Plaza in Hazard, KY. It originally opened in 1981 alongside SupeRx Drug and TG&Y (now Kmart) when the plaza was built. It was one of Hazard's stronger grocery stores until 1998, when Food City opened a mile north of the store. Competition between the two was intense, but as Food City had more departments (like a pharmacy and a gas station), this Kroger was quickly labeled as outdated, as it had the 1980's decor up until it closed in 2002, two years before Hazard even got a Wal-Mart Supercenter. Now, a third of the building is being used for Kentucky Government offices, while the other part of the building is still being renovated for a future business to come in.
