As a traveller I have always been fond of keepsakes to remember my time at a particular destination. However, recently I began to question the importance of souvenirs. After all, they are simply inanimate objects. What interests me most is how these special items are viewed with a sense of grandeur. Not necessarily to the object physical attributes, but rather, the souvenir is used to trigger their memories. Suddenly, these lifeless objects manifest a sense of "spirit". Unfortunately, this spirit is only really seen by the person who made the memories. This idea brings an intriguing notion to the process of purchasing souvenirs for people who weren't even there. People cherish their mementos often displaying them in rooms that receive the most attention.
This series includes several kinds of souvenirs in various locations around people's homes. I photographed the objects in locations that created a visual connection to the souvenir or where it came from. Besides the souvenirs, each photo has another object included in the composition. This was an intentional decision, as a way to compare the two. Because the viewer has no emotional connection to the souvenir, both objects have a sort of "banal" feeling to them.
