and feeling good

(Though RL keeps always intense in demands.)

Over an extended weekend we did a 2000 miles roadtrip from California to Utah and back, destination badlands near Hanksville. Highway 24 runs close to the Fremont River. Life needs water, in the badlands trees can grow only nearby the river. Mountains are eroded over thousands of years, showing their bare beauty.

I processed a paintery and a balanced HDR photo from three RAW exposures, blended them selectively, and carefully adjusted the curves and color balance. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

Happy belated 2016!!! I hope everyone's year is getting off to a good start.

....keeps the doctor away ;-)

I only left the house because the van needed a run. Our mechanic keeps telling us there’s nothing these old high milers love more than a long drive to keep them ready and raring to go. But at half past two on a grey December afternoon, deep in the heart of Twixmas, a quick blast down the A30 would have to do. Loggan’s Roundabout and back. I had plenty of stuff to be getting on with at home, and I do like a good black and white film during the festive period. More out of habit than anything else, I threw the camera and a couple of lenses in the bag and put them in the cab. Just in case I decided to stay out for a bit.

It was inevitable really. Even though the ceiling outside the van was drearily grey and lifeless, I really needed to shake off the Christmas lethargy. The fact that two consecutive Wednesdays had fallen on bank holidays meant there was no football to burn off the twin cheese and chocolate overdoses, so an energetic hike across the dunes seemed like an idea. When I arrived at the car park, it quickly became clear that I wasn’t the only one who felt the need to kick away the cobwebs and get some fresh air. There were far more cars than you usually see here on a Monday afternoon. But even so, you can easily find space up on the dunes, and so I set off towards the west, grabbing the bag and the tripod. Even if the contents stayed unused, the extra weight wouldn’t hurt. By now I’d eaten an awful lot of cheese and we had started on the second giant Toblerone. Friday football remained unaffected by the seasonal calendar this time around, but one game a week really wasn’t enough to tackle the torrent of cholesterol that was swirling around my insides by the day before New Year’s Eve.

It’s no secret that the middle of winter is my favourite time here. Isn’t it great that a hobby such as this makes the darkest months something to be enjoyed rather than feared? The short daylight hours come with their challenges, but when I do go out with the camera I know I’m going to be home at a sensible hour, even if I’ve been down to the furthest reaches of Land’s End or Cape Cornwall and Botallack. The Towans of Gwithian are comfortably under half an hour away and the big council car park (at least for now) remains free to users from November to March. It’s the perfect place to watch the evening set in over the Penwith hills to the west. Even when the light isn’t doing much. And the sky had been pretty well featureless as I marched across the rolling greens and yellows, following the smaller footpaths where I could be more or less alone with my thoughts as I went. But now, as so often happens, an envelope of light opened up through the greys and started to gently glow, just in the right place. I took a few shots from one of the higher dunes and continued my walk. Maybe I’d end up down on the beach, I wasn’t sure. Further along my route, I came to the point where the sands suddenly open up in front of the viewer, and found a place near the cliff edge in which I’ve planted the tripod more than once in the past. I was surprised by just how many people were down there on the beach, one or two of them braving the ocean, while a kite surfer charged across the waves. For now I wouldn’t head down to the sand. I was enjoying watching the world from here. I set up the tripod.

Just in time as it turned out. Within moments, the sun dropped into the glowing envelope to set the sea on fire, clouds of spray growing into a hazy golden mist that hovered over the water and lit up the centre of my frame while everything around it disappeared into secretive shadows. Dozens of silhouettes continued to stroll purposefully along the sand, many of them picked out by the soft rays that reached down and touched them through the gap in the doom laden clouds. A host of Christmas hangovers, walking off the cheese and Toblerones. The magic lasted for no more than two or three minutes, and then the window in the sky closed for the evening. To think that all I was going to do was to whizz down to the big roundabout and back. Blink and you so easily miss these moments.

I did make it down to the beach afterwards, but only so I could be next to the sea for a while before clambering back up onto the dunes. Chased by a dusk lit shower I made a point of climbing all of the tallest dunes on the way back to the van, even running over a couple of them, just for the sake of compensating for the football games I was missing this Christmas. Hopefully by the time we get back to business as usual, I won’t pass out in a pile of cheese within five minutes of kick off.

More from the feeder ...this handsome bird made its first appearance i the yard this year, and keeps coming to the suet. as the chicks grow the visits get more frequents, which is why I think it is breeding in the adjacent park.

And the fantastic winter weather just keeps on giving. From the high tide roost in Bangor. Super high tides even though they are almost neaps and the pressure is high. I think because the pressure is even higher down in the mid Atlantic. It makes everything just beautiful looking.

" The sun is gone and the flowers rot

Words are spaces between us

And I should have been drown in the rivers I found of token lost

And I should have been down when you made me insecure

So break me down if it makes you feel right

And hate me now if it keeps you alright

You can break me down if it takes all your might

'Cause I'm so much more that meets the eye

And I'm the one you can never trust

'Cause wounds are ways to reveal us

And yeah, I could have tried and devoted my life to both of us

But what a waste of my time when the world we had was yours

So break me down if it makes you feel right

(So break me down)

And hate me now if it keeps you alright

(So break me down)

You can break me down if it takes all your might

'Cause I am so much more than all your lies

Hate me, break me down

(So break me down)

Down! (So break me down)

So break me down if it makes you feel right

(So break me down)

And hate me now if it keeps you alright

(So break me down)

A carnivorous animal in the same family as weasels, badgers, mink etc. that lives primarily on a diet of fish but also includes frogs, crayfish, crabs and even a few waterfowl.

A coat of long guard hairs over their insulated underfur keeps them warm and dry so they can stay comfortable throughout the North American winters. They are very successful at hunting prey in our rivers, streams and ponds aided by their webbed feet, long muscular tail and sharp claws coupled with the ability to hold their breath for extended periods. As a preventative measure to becoming waterlogged they do spend a lot of time on land and enter the water only to hunt or travel much unlike the sea otters that spend most of their lives in the ocean. An overland sprint of 10 to 18 miles while searching for prey is not uncommon.

River otters seem to have the ability to live alone or in pairs but are quick to socialize in groups when other members are encountered. After mating and going through a gestation period of 80 - 90 days a female will give birth to 1 - 5 pups in a den called a holt or couch which she excavates under tree roots or a cache of rocks. Prior to the birth the female called a bitch or sow will drive the male (dog or boar) away and the pups or cubs will be tended to by the female and older offspring if still around. The pups will begin emerging from the den at about 1 month of age and mom will entice them into the water for their first swim at about 2 months. After the pups are weaned dad may return and help raise the juveniles until probably 1 year of age. Females attain sexual maturity at 2 years of age and males at 3.

River otters range in size from 10 to 33 lbs and 2.5 to 5 ' in length with females being about 1/3 the size of males. When not hunting prey they spend much time playing and frolicking with each other. This individual is one of a trio that has clawed its way onto the ice to enjoy the spoils caught underwater.

Pops Staples was leader of his family band, The Staple Singers

They were called upon by Martin Luther King Jr to be a featured band for his Civil Rights crusades. The Staple Singers were also a very successful Soul/Pop group and had quite a few chart topping songs. Mavis Staples is still recording and performing live. She remains in high demand for her voice to grace the work of others in their studio sessions.

Happy Sliders Sunday :)

I haven't been around on Flickr much recently because of a nasty feverish infection that still keeps me confined to bed most of the time. But I wanted to send a little sign of life, even if it's from the archives. I wanted to upload something lighter / brighter after the many dark images I've shown recently, and I also wanted it to be a LX100 image which helped to reduce the images to chose from :). This one shows a detail of the Berlin Congress Hall (which, as some of you already know, has been nicknamed "pregnant oyster" by the Berliners). We (= Sabine.R and I) had been there fairly late, because we wanted to take blue hour captures of the Congress Hall, but we still had to wait until 11 p.m. before the sky finally assumed that magical blue (please check the image in the first comment if you like).

We'd had a cloudless blue sky back then, and in LR I'd played around with the HSL sliders to remove the fading evening blue - and quite liked the result. Actually this image had already been developed and edited for a long time, but since I'm checking out Topaz DeNoise (30 day trial) right now, I thought I'd give it another noise (which can be quite strong on the LX100 with its 13 MP sensor) reducing treatment. Topaz DeNoise did a really good job here, I think, and - so far - I'm really impressed with the results it yields. More on Topaz DeNoise later :)

I'll try to catch up with you, but at the moment I'm still feeling somewhat under the weather. Have a great new week ahead, dear Flickr friends!

Happy Teddy Bear Tuesday to everyone who likes Teddy Bears and ...cakes😊

Today is the 12th day of Valentine's month of February; I must include laughter in my February love group. Laughter keeps one younger, lightens up everyone's mood, and can change the direction of the general mood from a sad, gloomy one to a happy and joyous one. Laughter in itself is a kind of medicine, one that we cannot live without!

Laughing Song

William Blake

When the green woods laugh with the voice of joy,

And the dimpling stream runs laughing by;

When the air does laugh with our merry wit,

And the green hill laughs with the noise of it;

when the meadows laugh with lively green,

And the grasshopper laughs in the merry scene,

When Mary and Susan and Emily

With their sweet round mouths sing "Ha, ha he!"

When the painted birds laugh in the shade,

Where our table with cherries and nuts is spread:

Come live, and be merry, and join with me,

To sing the sweet chorus of "Ha, ha, he!"

A day without laughter is a day wasted.

Charlie Chaplin

The most wasted of all days is one without laughter.

E.E. Cummings

We need more kindness, more compassion, more joy, more laughter. I definitely want to contribute to that.

Ellen DeGeneres

With heartfelt and genuine thanks for your kind visit. Have a beautiful day, be well, keep your eyes open, appreciate the beauty surrounding you, enjoy creating, stay safe, and laugh often! ❤️❤️❤️

I LOVE COTTON... pure cotton, it keeps you cool, it keeps you warm...

The fiber is most often spun into yarn or thread and used to make a soft, breathable textile.

The use of cotton for fabric is known to date to prehistoric times; fragments of cotton fabric dated to the fifth millennium BC have been found in the Indus Valley Civilisation.

Although cultivated since antiquity, it was the invention of the cotton gin that lowered the cost of production that led to its widespread use, and it is the most widely used natural fiber cloth in clothing today.

It comes in the most gorgeous colours. I chose this beautiful combination... watercolours? Turquoisy green and royal blue...

Thank you for your time and comments, greatly appreciated, M, (*_*)

Routine - Steven Wilson & Ninet Tayeb

What do I do with all the children's clothes

such tiny things that still smell of them

And the footprints in the hallway

onto my knees scrub them away

And how to be of use make the tea and the soup

All of their favorites throw them away

And all their schoolbooks and the running shoes

Washing and cleaning the dirty still sink

Routine keeps me in line

Helps me pass the time

Concentrate my mind

Helps me to sleep

And keep making beds and keep the cat fed

Open the Windows let the air in

And keep the house clean and keep the routine

Paintings they make still stuck to the fridge

Keep cleaning keep ironing

Cooking their meals on the stainless steel hop

Keep washing keep scrubbing

Long until the dark comes to bruise the sky

Deep in the debt to night

Routine keeps me in line

Helps me pass the time

Helps me to sleep

Routine keeps me in line

Helps me pass the time

Helps me to sleep

The most beautiful morning forever

Like the ones from far off, far off away

With the hum of the bees in the jasmine sway

R.E.M. - „Leave“ (Alternate Version)

www.youtube.com/watch?v=omMxZBGblho

Nothing could bring me closer

Nothing could bring me near

Where is the road I follow

To leave, leave?

It′s under, under, under my feet

The sea spread out there before me

Where do I go when the land touches the sea?

There is my trust in what I believe

That's what keeps me

That′s what keeps me

That's what keeps me down

To leave, believe it

Leave it all behind

Shifting the dream

Nothing could bring me further from my old friend time

Shifting the dream

It's charging the scene

I know where I marked the signs

I suffer the dreams of a world gone mad

I like it like that and I know it

I know it well, ugly and sweet

I temper madness with an even extreme

That′s what keeps me

That′s what keeps me

That's what keeps me down

I say that I′m a bantam lightweight

I say that I'm a phantom airplane

That never left the ground

That′s what keeps me

That's what keeps me

That′s what keeps me down

To leave it, believe it

Leave it all behind

Lift me, lift me

I attain my dream

I lost myself, I lost the

Heartache calling me

I lost myself in sorrow

I lost myself in pain

I lost myself in gravity

Memory, leave, leave

That's what keeps me

That's what keeps me

That′s what keeps me down

To leave it, believe it

Leave it all behind

That′s what keeps me

That's what keeps me

That′s what keeps me down

To leave it, believe it

Leave it all behind

Lift my hands, my eyes are still

I'll walk into the sea

Shoot myself in a different place

And leave it

I′ve longed for this to take me

I've longed for my release

I′ve waited for the callin'

To leave, leave

Leave, leave

Leavin', leavin′

Your treasure lies beyond the door that fear keeps closed.

Time keeps on slippin', slippin', slippin'

Into the future

Time keeps on slippin', slippin', slippin'

Into the future

In these days of lockdown I've gone. a bit crazy not having access to my favourite beaches. In preparation for my impending lonely lockdowns to come, I've decided to learn some new musical instruments. I ordered two banjos, a. concertina, some tin whistles and a bodrhan :))) I explained to the neighbours they may hear some funny noises. This is a. photo from a magnificent walk in the Nevache valley, from our wonderful month in the alps of France and Italy. It's hard to believe looking back that we had such a brilliant time in such a crazy year. However the world keeps turning, so that's today's track by Tom Waits, The World Keeps Turning.

Exploring Oklahoma

Grevillea bloom in my southern Gold Coast hinterland home where The Wet just keeps on giving. Another sun shower — bejewelled.

This entire park was flooded the year before. If you look closely you can still see some of the sand and debris that litters the pathway that came up from the Missouri River. It took many months before they reopened it this year. This area is still one of my favorite places to catch a sunset.

English Landing Park, Parkville, MO.

Well it looks as the Corona Virus has cancelled my trip to Utah for spring break. My oldest daughter has asthma and I just can't take the risk of her catching anything as we travel to hotels and places to eat. I will miss the adventure but her health is much more important than a photography and hiking adventure. I was fortunate to be able to cancel all the upcoming stays without penalty.

I hope everyone out their stays safe and practices good hygiene.

When life keeps you busy, take time to pause and reflect. A fence is a great place to do that for this Red Winged Blackbird pair. They are taking a break from building a nest. They know there will be a commitment soon to staying with the nest and raising the young until they head out on their own. I am watching a few birds in our backyard feeding fledglings this week. Happy Fence Friday.
