Just across the street from the famous al-Azhar Mosque in Islamic Cairo is probably the holiest site in the entire city: the al-Hussein Mosque, built in 1154 CE.

The mosque was named after Hussein [the second Ismaili imam, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (saw) and son of Ali, the fourth caliph for Sunnis and the first imam for Shias].

Hussein was beheaded as a martyr in the Battle of Karbala in present-day Iraq on the 10th of Muharram, 680 CE. This date is known as Ashura (loosely translated to "ten" in Arabic) and its observance is one of the many aspects of Islam that separates the Sunnis from the Shias.

For Shias, the 10th of Muharram is a day of mourning as it is the day their first imam became a martyr. Sunnis however fast on the 10th of Muharram as it is said that the Prophet Moses fasted on this day to show gratitude to God for freeing the Israelites from Egypt.

However, Hussein became a martyr in 680 in Iraq, so why was there a mosque built in his honor in Egypt almost 500 years later?

Hussein's body and head was buried in Karbala near the place of his death after the battle, and a shrine / mosque was built in the space a few years later. It is known as the Hussein Mosque (similar to what became the name of the Cairene mosque). All the martyrs from the Battle of Karbala were also buried in a nearby mass grave. This site commonly known as the holiest site for Shias after Makkah/Medina.

But it is said that around the time that the 21st Shia Imam / Fatimid ruler, Tayyab, went into hiding, the head of Hussein was ordered to be transferred from the Hussein Mosque in Karbala to Cairo, and in 1154 they built a mausoleum for it, and a mosque around it: the al-Hussein Mosque. It is believed that this is the present location of Hussein's head, as well as a few other artifacts.

Next to Hussein's mausoleum is what is known to be the oldest and complete Qur'an existing today (pictured). It is written in much larger text than normally found in Qur’ans and it is blocked off by bars and glass, the same one's blocking off the mausoleum.

Also in the mosque (though the only confirmation I got of this is from two Egyptians in the mosque at the time), there is a closed off room that is said to house a few hairs from the Prophet Muhammad's (saw) beard, a sword and eyelashes. However, Topkapi Palace in Turkey claims to have the same artifacts and more -- perhaps both places have them. I have not yet been to Turkey so I cannot confirm the accuracy of this detail.

However there is something that I would like to write of al-Hussein's mosque that I found, as a Muslim, very disheartening.

In Islam, there is a term known as Shirk. Literally, "polytheism." Or to consider anyone a god other than God, or to associate partners with God (as in the Prophet Jesus being God's son). In Islam, shirk is known as one of the worst, if not the worst, sin. It is written in the Qur'an that God forgives any sin except for those who commit shirk.

Well, the reason I felt very disheartened in the al-Hussein Mosque is because I witnessed countless amounts of shirk. The acts of course could also be seen as paying respects, but there are tamer ways to pay respects, I feel.

I don't mean to offend anyone by writing this, because everyone has the right to believe and behave however they want, but as a Muslim, I was not happy with what I saw going on in the al-Hussein mosque.

In the mausoleum, the entire group was singing chants and prayers about Hussein (seen here). Many were rubbing their heads and hands against the railing that surrounded the mausoleum. Others kissed it. Weeping. Outside of the mausoleum in the prayer area, men were praying in groups facing the mausoleum. Almost as if they were prostrating before Hussein. These could all be seen as either signs of respect or simply praying toward Makkah (as Makkah is technically in the direction they were praying), but then why did they choose to pray directly in front of the mausoleum? The entire mosque was empty. To me, this is known as shirk, as they were dignifying Hussein to holy levels. Something very wrong in Islam.

The same thing was going on for the closed off room that housed Muhammad's (saw) beard / sword (seen in this photo here). Men lined up to kiss the door that supposedly housed such artifacts. Rubbed their heads and face against the door. To me, there are other ways to show respect than to kiss and bow your heads towards a person, or the idea of a person. Especially when the ways you choose to show respect is forbidden in Islam.

But what bothered me most about all of it was that no one was saying anything. It seemed common place.

Shias obviously hold Hussein in a much higher light than Sunnis do – and by connection they hold Ali in a much higher light. This form of paying respects is common place at the mosque in Karbala where the majority of people who go are Shia. But in Egypt, where it is said that Sunni is by and large the majority sect? Like figures that describe 99% Sunni? Why is there so much of this going on in a mosque, and on an Eid of all days!

(btw, there cannot be any absolute truth to the 99% figure of Sunnis. Cairo was in fact created by the Fatimid Empire, who was all Shia. There is a big anti-Shia sentiment in Cairo, or rather all of Egypt, but there is no way there are that few Shias in this country.)

A friend brought it to my attention that when she went for Umrah (like Hajj/pilgrimage) that security had to keep Muslims from the Prophet's (saw) tomb in Medina as they would perform the same type of shirk acts that I described to her there as well. Why was no one keeping these Muslims from doing the same thing here?

I really don’t mean to offend anyone in this writing, but I just can't understand why this was going on. So if anyone can enlighten me, please do so. I also posted up a video of the reverence inside the mausoleum here.

Flag at the dome - Imam Hussain (as) Shrine, Karbala, Iraq

The real door of this potentially historic mosque is really in the Museum of Islamic Art (which just opened this week after being closed for nearly a decade of renovations!!) but this imitation is pretty spot on.

The gorgeous metal peices are nailed onto the slab, slit by slit, so meticulously detailed onto the massive doors of this, the final Fatimid mosque.

They look great :)

A quick history of the mosque that sits just at the entrance of al-Qahira's souther gate, Bab Zuwayla: It was supposed to be the original home of al-Hussein's head when it was called from Karbala to Cairo centuries ago. But plans changed and the head was moved to the area north of al-Azhar, which is now surrounded by the Mosque of al-Hussein.

My favorite part of this mosque is that while it's at ground level now, it was above ground nearly 1,000 years ago. The shops (that are now below ground) were at street level. The reason for this change in elevation is due to the repaved streets of Cairo not having been initially broken down, creating layers and layers of unneeded additions. Neat, eh?

Shrine of Al Abbas, Karbala, Iraq

The Shrine of Imam Hussain ibn Ali آستان عالیہ حضرت امام حسین is one of the oldest and renowned sites of pilgrimage which comprises the mosque and burial site of Imam Husayn Ibn Ali the third Imam of Islam in the city of Karbala, Iraq. It stands on the site of the Mausoleum of Imam Husayn ibn Ali, the second grandson of Muhammad, near the place where he was martyred during the Battle of Karbala in 680 C.E.. The tomb of Imam Husayn ibn Ali is one of the holiest places for Shias outside of Mecca and Medina, and many make pilgrimages to the site. Every year, millions of pilgrims visit the city to observe Ashura, which marks the anniversary of Imam Husayn ibn Ali's death.

The Umayyad and Abbasid caliphs prevented construction of the shrines and discouraged pilgrimage to the sites.] The tomb and its annexes were destroyed by Abbasid caliph Al-Mutawakkil in 850-851 and Shi'a pilgrimage was prohibited, but shrines in Karbala and Najaf were built by the Buwayhid emir 'Adud al-Daula in 979-80.

The boundary wall of the shrine surrounds wooden gates covered with glass decorations. The gates open into a courtyard separated into smaller rooms or precincts with many "Iwans" along the walls. The grave of Imam Husayn ibn Ali is enclosed within a metal-mesh like structure, found directly beneath the golden dome. On 5 March 2013 the process of replacing the zarih (metal mesh like structure) over the tomb of Imam Husayn Ibn Ali (a.s.) was completed and the new zarih inaugurated. Al Abbas Mosque is located nearby.

Details about Mourning of Muharram -

The Mourning of Muharram is an important period of mourning in Shia Islam, taking place in Muharram which is the first month of the Islamic calendar. It is also called the Remembrance of Muharram (Arabic: ذكرى محرم or مناسبة محرم‎). Many of the events associated with the remembrance take place in congregation halls known as Hussainia.

The event marks the anniversary of the Battle of Karbala when Imam Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, and a Shia Imam, was killed by the forces of the second Umayyad caliph Yazid I. The event is marked by arranging 'majalis' (gatherings) to review Islamic teachings and to commemorate Imam Hussain's sacrifice. The mourning reaches its climax on the tenth day, known as Ashura, on which the forces of Yazid killed the 72 individuals who fought, including Imam Hussain, his family and supporters. The women and children left living were made prisoners and transported to Yazid's court in Damascus.

Ya Hussain! Ya Hussain!

shaheed-e-Karbala ki mominoN jab yaad aati hai

tadap jaati hai duniya, khoon ke aansooN bahaati hai

Ya Hussain! Ya Hussain!

Whenever the martyrs of Karbala are remembered

The world cries and sheds tears of blood

O Hussain! O Hussain!

shah hast Hussain baadshah hast Hussain

deen hast Hussain deen pana hast Hussain

sar daad na daad dast dar dast-e-Yazeed

haq aa ke bina La-Ila hast Hussain

Ruler is Hussain, Emperor is Hussain,

Faith is Hussain , guardian of faith is Hussain .

Offered his head and not the hand to Yazid.

Truly, the mirror of faith is Hussain

sajde mein sar kataane ko aakhir kata dia

lekin Khuda ke naam ka danka baja dia

Ya Hussain! Ya Hussain!!

Finally, he was martyred during prayer

But the word of God was made famous the world over

O Hussain! O Hussain!

deed ki gar talaash hai sar ko jhuka namaaz mein

dil se khudi ko bhool kar khud ko mita namaaz mein

aayega tujh ko jab nazar roo-e-Khuda jab namaaz mein

pahle Hussain ki tarah sar ko kata namaaz mein

aur keh

Ya Hussain! Ya Hussain!

If you search for God, bow your head in prayer

Forget the self, lose your self in prayer

You will then realise God in your prayers

When you first sacrifice yourself like Hussain in prayer and then say,

O Hussain! O Hussain!

kis ki majaal ai Hussain tujh ko ho tujh se ham-saree

baap ke ghar Imam the naana ke ghar payambari

shakl-e-Hussain dekh kar haq bhi kahega hashr mein

ai mere Mustafa ke laal ummat-e-Mustafa baree

Ya Hussain! Ya Hussain!

Who can claim parity with you O Hussain,

Your father was the leader and grandfather was prophet.

Even God will say looking at the face of Hussain

O the flower of Muhammad, all his followers are forgiven

O Hussain! O Hussain!

salaami Karbala mein kya qayamat ki ghari hogi

churi Shabbir ki gardan pe jis dam chal rahi hogi

kaleja thaam kar Meer-e-falaq bhi rah gaya hoga

kaleje per Ali Akbar ke barchi jab lagi hogi

What difficult time it would have been in Karbala

When Shabbir had the knife on his throat.

Even the prince of the Universe would have his heart out

When the dagger was drawn on the heart of Ali Akbar

mujhe jaane do paani bhar ke ye Abbas kehte the

kayi din ki pyaasi hai Sakina ro rahi hogi

luti hai jaise duniya Karbala mein ibn-e-Haider ki

kisi mazloom ki duniya na duniya mein luti hogi

Let me go, let me take the water with me, urged Abbas

Sakina is waiting, thirsty for days.

Like the world of father of Haider was lost

Nobody's world would have been lost this way

Mohammad ke nawaase ne jo kee teghoN ke saaye mein

bashar to kya farishtoN se na aise bandagi hogi

hamare khooN ke badle mein ummat bakhsh de Ya Rab

Khuda se hashr mein ye iltijaa Shabbir ki hogi

Ya Hussain! Ya Hussain!

As prayed the grandson of Muhammad under the swords

Let alone humans, even angels would not have prayed that way.

O God ! forgive the Muslims in lieu of my sacrifice

This will be the request of Shabbir on the judgement day.

O Hussain! O Hussain!

Aafat thi harb o zarb e Ali Akbar e diler

Ghusse mein jhapte ser pe jaise garsina sher

Sab sar buland past zabardast sab thay zer

Jangal mein chaar simpt huwe zakhmiyoon ke dher

Siraan ke utre tan se jo thay rann chadhey huwe

Abbas se bhi jang mein kuch thay badhey huwe

Talwaarein barsi subh se nusfun nihaar tak

Hilti rahi zameen laraztey rahey falak

Kaampa kiye paroon ko simte huwe malak

Na'rey na phir wo thay na wo taeghon ki thi chamak

Dhaalon ka daur barchiyoon ka auj ho gaya

Hangaam e zuhr khatema e fauj ho gaya

Lashe sabho ke sibte Nabi khud uthake laye

Kham hogaye ye daagh uthake Imame deen

Jhuk kar bana hilaal e Nabi ka mahe jabeen

Yoon dard mein tadap ke kiya nalaye hazeen

Hilne lage pahaad larazne lagi zameen

Aayi jigar ko taab na is waaredaat ki

Khushki mein lagi doobne kashti hayaat ki

Jab saff kashi ki dhoom huwi qatl gaah mein

Tasweer e marg phir gayi sab ki nigaah mein

Doobe rafiq e yusuf e deen haq ki chaah mein

Daftar khula ajal ka Hussaini sipaah mein

Jaanbaaziyaan dikhake jari naam kar gaye

Khaake shifa pa noor ke daane bikhar gaye

Jis waqt aamad aamade saif e Khuda huwi

Hal chal padi har ek ke dar pe qaza huwi

Nabood zindagi huwi hasti fana huwi

Himmat dilon ke jism se quwwat juda huwi

Labrez hokey umr ke saaghar chhalak gaye

Kaampi zameen pahaad jagah se sarak gaye

Maidaan mein jab riyaaze Hussaini khizaan huwa

Dunya se kaarwaan Shahe deen ka rawaan huwa

Darya e khoon mein gharq har ek naujawaan huwa

Hamshakle Mustafa bhi shaheedey sinaan huwa

Rotey thay Shaah lasho mein tanha khade huwe

Thay khaak par kaleje ke tukde padey huwe

Garmi ka roz jang ki kyon kar karoon bayaan

Darr hai ke misl e shama na jalne lage zabaan

Wo loo ke al hazar wo hararath ke al amaan

Rann ki zameen tou surkh thi aur zard aasmaan

Aab e khunukh ko khalq tarasti thi khaak par

Goya hawa se aag barasti thi khaak par

Wo loo wo aaftaab ki hiddat wo taab o tab

Kala tha rang dhoop se din ka misaal e shab

Khud nahr e alqama ke bhi sukhey huwe thay lab

Khaime jo thay hibaabon ke tap te thay sab ke sab

Udhti thi khaak khushk tha chashma hayaat ka

Khoula huwa tha dhoop se pani furaat ka

Shiite Muslim women weep at the scene of the bomb explosions which rocked the holy city of Karbala, 110 kms (70 miles) south of Baghdad, during the annual Shiite Muslim ritual of Ashura 02 March 2004. An AFP reporter saw at least 30 bodies piled up outside the hospital in Karbala after blasts rocked the sacred Iraqi city as more than a million Shiites marked their holiest day of the year. More casualties were being brought in all the time on stretchers, wrapped in blankets and dripping blood, in ambulances or private cars. AFP PHOTO/Ahmad AL-RUBAYE
