Almost everything about Mashhad relates to its role as the holiest city in Iran, even its name (literally: burial place of the martyr). Mashhad started life out as Sanabad, a village pitstop for trade caravans headed towards Turkmenistan. But in the ninth century, the eighth Shi'ite Imam Ali Bin Moosa Al Reza, the great grand son of Imam Ali who was the cousin & son in law of Prophet Mohammad was poisoned by the caliph of the time. Imam Reza was buried in Mashhad, and his shrine became one of the holiest sites to the shi'ite muslims after the Holy Kaaba in Saudi Arabia and Karbala in Iraq (wikitravel).

# 8 intrestingness
The Day of Ashura is on the 10th day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar and marks the climax of the Remembrance of Muharram.
It is commemorated by the Shi‘a as a day of mourning for the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad at the Battle of Karbala on 10 Muharram in the year 61 AH (October 10, 680 AD[2]).
Wikipedia
In Kashan, Iran, the "Mad of Hussein" as they call themselves were mourning in memory of Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad, who was killed by the forces of the second Umayyad caliph Yazid I at Karbala (now in Iraq). The shia men were in a giant and dark room, moving and singing in circles for two hours listening to the Mollah words who was telling about glorious life of Hussein. The room was full and so hot that my camera was like coming out of a bath...Me too!

"I am confused, you have a muslim name yet according to your comments and pics you seem anti-islam. Can you please state if you are anti-islam or not? This will help determine your artisticness."
I am shocked to say the least on Flickr , I thought people who migrated here were human , smart , mankind loving, that is what photography is all about.
You capture a moment like a fleeting poem and read it out to others , its not important everyone likes it or adheres to your thoughts, but there is someone out there who needs a thread to continue, like my pictures of the Devil stump tree, that connected me to Sarif who has more knowledge on this subject than I have he has visited this place 30 times and I am searching divinity in a moment.
We all I think are here on a picture site to expose our worlds , not to preach or proselytize, I shoot pain, I have mentioned this so many times, I do not manipulate what I shoot unless to add some artistry.
But pictures of pain like this one of a possessed lady, this is an awfully bad picture , but see the eye of the boy, and tell me does a womans pain need to be sharply focused. Is a woman's pain ever sharply focused .
You can hang a camera to a kite shoot , but a woman's pain hangs by a tale..the tale of her inherent vulnerability.
Fuck before asking me whether I am anti Islam, why dont you go to Iraq ask the Muslims both Shia ans Sunnis if they what they are doing it , is Anti Islam.
First check out your backyard before you dump shit on my manicured lawn..Fuck You.
At Karbala , when Yazid was marking a black page , killing Truth , Imam Hussain the grandson of the Holy Prophet did anyone raise a hue and cry did any one say "It Is anti Islam.."
Man I am shocked by my moderation.. I am not a Mullah a preacher or even my own sect promoting guy..but I am happy for once that as a Muslim I was born in India not in a neighboring country or an Arab country.
I am adding my comments to Ovaz as part of this body post..
I would not like to lose it like I lose my temper...

I cut my head
I bleed
they call me a heretic
yet when the puritan
lays a bomb in a train
or blows up a mosque
their collective conscience
does not prick
somewhere as I write this
another new bomb
begins to tick
an entire community
they cleverly trick
the power over religiosity
of a dynamite stick
a single click
a silent wall weeps
a rebellious brick
on the quick
terrorism
on the soul of humanity
just for kicks

Millions of Muslims worldwide are now marking the holy day of Ashura. On Ashura, Shiite men flagellate themselves with chains and cut themselves with knives on their foreheads as a way to mourn for Hussein in a ritual called "tatbeer." Hundreds were seen on the streets of Karbala on Tuesday performing the ritual. Some Shiite clerics have condemned the practice and have advocated for donating blood instead.
A little tribute from me to The Martyrs of Karbala on the night of 10 Moharram 1436 Hijri i.e. 04 November 2014.
We must not forget the message of worshiping only One God i.e. none but Allah. The message that Imam Husain (3rd among 12) provoked in the hearts and thoughts of the human being by sacrificing not only his own but his companions' and his family's lives as well. Not only this, but his holy family was also disgraced by Yazid and his army.
The Fortress of Al-Ukhaidir is located roughly 50 km south of Karbala, Iraq. It is a large, rectangular fortress erected in 775 AD with a unique defensive style. Constructed by an Abbasid caliph, Ukhaidir represents Abbasid architectural innovation in the structures of its courtyards, residences and mosque. With the architectural design, visiting on a dusty yet sunny day offers a chance to capture shadows and illuminating light in the same scene.

The shia men were in a giant and dark room, crying like small kids with lots of tears and sobs while listening to the Mollah words who was telling about glorious life of Hussein. The room was so full and so hot that many had to go outside. This man, with his son, had left the room, and was crying like hundreds of others adults in the street. Many kids were with their parents, and did not understand this flood of emotion.

These are hands weighing 30 kg, the bracelets are all welded carbonised steel, they cannot be removed , and on his feet another 35 kg, also welded, the only buffer on his feet is a cloth bandadge so as not to peel the skin of his feet .
He has aged , his penance in memory of the fourth Shia Imam Zainul Abedin Sayyede Sajjad the surviving son of Hazrat Imam Hussain.Did he really survive Karbala - yes he did.
It was Sham - Damscus where the womanhood of Islam was betrayed, that prematurely killed the fourth Imam from within and without.
He aged his hair turned white overnight , he could do nothing weak , bedridden and await deliverance from the evil deeds of Yazid his captor.
And being the Imam of his time see his sister 3 year old Sakina cry and ultimately die languishing in a cell. Even Zainab the indomitable Sister of Hussain took her strength from her nephew and her Imam.. Sayyade Sajjad.
His penance and his devotion to Allah was what kept him alive.
Now please do not ask me why this Sunni born asectic whom I call Zanjirwale Bawa has taken this penance of walking life with chains, following a Shia Imam?
I was meeting him after Haji Malang pictures I have not posted as yet.
He has stopped wearing his chest armour that weighs another 45 kg, he says it tires him out, he is human and humble enough to tell me this.
We know each other for more than 5 years he was being humiliated at Chancawalli Shrine by one of the important hoodlum type person there , and its a story that saddens me the corosion in mans soul.
The man offered Rs 35 to Zanjirwale Bawa placing the money on his face and told me to take his picture I refused.
Rs 35 is an insult to both the ascetic and the memory of the Fourth Imam.
He had me thrown out of Chancawalli Dargah, this gangster man.
But while leaving the Dargah, I turned back and saw the Bawa limping behind me seeking forgiveness , I put my hand in my pocket and you wont believe it the exact amount of Rs 35 came out of my pocket .
I handed it over to the Bawa.
This is our bond and we meet at crossroads of life.
While I was going to Pune last Sunday I got a call from the Bawa that he was at Abdul Rehman Dargah at Dongri for 3 days. But I could not meet him.
On my return from Pune I completely forgot about him ,and was going to Khar with my wife , I got a call on my phone and he was trying some other persons number but he connected to me.
This time he was staying for a few hours at Shastri Nagar Santa Cruz , the following morning he was leaving for Haji Pir Dargah in Kutch.
He wished if I could see him.
I left my wife to do her work for which she had come and I set out to meet Zanjirwale Bawa towards Santa Cruz which was on my route.
He was on the 6 th floor the lift had broken down so I walked up the steps , and its here that I shot his hands.
