Note bar frames (typical US practice and contrary to classic UK practice of plate frames) and that these are *outside* the wheels - think 'City of Truro'. Note too the bottom of the firebox and the ash and cinders on the framing; no dampers on these - primary air whether you like it or not.
I think this loco has compensated springing - hitherto I'd not discovered how this works but I think I'm getting it. Better illustrated in a pic of a K-36 class loco to be posted in due course...
