One of the two previous youngsters who vanished a week ago. We now know that she too fell prey to the Sparrowhawk who we did not even know was about. Little Junior, aged about ten weeks. RIP my sweet one.
Junior! I've told you to leave me alone when I'm having a bath. Go eat a worm or something.
Turdus migratorius
An American Robin can produce three successful broods in one year. On average, though, only 40 percent of nests successfully produce young. Only 25 percent of those fledged young survive to November. From that point on, about half of the robins alive in any year will make it to the next. Despite the fact that a lucky robin can live to be 14 years old, the entire population turns over on average every six years.

IMO one of my best spots; in fact it's only the second one I've ever seen. Looks like a tough old thing, but I bet getting spares isn't easy. One source of spares could be Iran, as a locally assembled version (built by Saipa) is apparently quite common there.
After the parent left, Junior started munching away at his snack. Rather than swallowing it whole, he was ripping bits off it.

All of us were excited when we saw the chick take a short flight around the nest and then do a nice landing.
This is the older of the two Great Horned Owlets at Burnsmead. Yesterday, when we arrived at the park and did a bit of searching, we found Junior on this branch, her younger brother (?) on the branch below (at my eye level), and Mom was in the next tree. Junior just had to show off her wing power : )

Junior has officially moved to our new house in Wilmington Illinois.
Junior is my dad's old stuffed animal. My dad got him in kindergarten so that would make him over 55 years old.
