Charaideo

Charaideo, once the sacred place of the Morans and the Barahi's, bears the sacred memory of the Ahom Rulers. It was here that the Sukafa, the first Ahom monarch, set up his permanent capital in A>D> 1253 which continued to remain as such until the reign of King Tyokhamti, A.D. 1380-1389. Only the cemetery and sacred area can be seen today. Royal families and high dignitaries were buried in ritual Ahom customs in mounds, or maidams.

Assam - from Nimati Ghat across the Brahmaputra River to Majuli Island

Jorhat, Assam, NE India

Story of Assam must have a chapter named “Bihu” ; a dance form with scintillating music and song ; song of love and passion. Drums , various kind of wind instruments ( flute is just one of them) and foot tapping rhythm . It is always a group dance. In the woman group the main danseur is called Nachani . This college going lady was getting ready to take part in a Bihu performance ; she was the Nachani.

This is my last post from Assam as this leg of my journey is coming to an end ; am tired, tanned and fatigued ; for the last twenty-two days am constantly moving . Though am leaving Assam but Assam will remain deeply etched in my mind for years. Most probably till death do us part. It’s a land where every turn of lens brings you a new frame ; at times I felt Photograph (alone) as a media is inadequate to capture and express Assam in totality , you need to be a good painter to make the communication complete.

Why I said my Assam ( Mor Ahom); let me quote my favorite script writer Jean Claude Carrière “A country, a land ceases to be foreign the moment one puts one’s foot on it. And the air one breathes immediately becomes one’s own.” Everything belongs to everyone.

RAF Amarda Road is a former wartime Royal Air Force (RAF) airfield located near Rasgovindpur village in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, India.

The Amarda Road airstrip, as it was called in war terminology, spreads across an area of nearly 600 acres. Built in the 1940s at a cost of Rs 3 crore, it was eventually abandoned after the war. It was probably named as Amarda Road Airfield because of the nearby Amarda Road railway station. The airfield was used by No. 136 Squadron RAF, No. 177 Squadron RAF and No. 607 Squadron RAF. The 'Air Fighting Training Unit', formed in February 1943, was also based here.

As an airfield, Amarda Road fell on the supply route for the Nationalist Armies of China in their fight against the Japanese. Aircraft of the RAF and the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) would regularly fly from this space to China via Chabua (Dibrugarh), Jorhat and Vijaynagar across the infamous hump route over Arunachal and East Tibet.

Amarda Road and other neighbouring airfields - Dalbhumgarh, Dudhkundi, Salua, Digri, Salbani and Chakulia - formed a web of airfields created by the Allies to stop the impending Japanese advance in the east. During the war, Amarda Road was, to put it simply, a battle hub. After the war was over, most airfields, including this one, fell into disuse. Today, only the Kalaikunda airstrip, which was declared an Air Force Station in 1954, exists.

Seven decades after the base was built, the 11,000 feet (3,400 m) concrete runway is still intact, though the buildings that once cluttered the edges are gone.

Satras are socio-religious institutions in the Assam region of India that belong to the Mahapuruxiya Dharma. Monks, called bhakats, live in satras under a satradhikar. In some orders of the religion, the bhakats are celibate (kewalia bhakat). The satras are not merely religious institutions but play cultural and historical roles in society. A dance form that was initiated by Srimanta Sankardeva and later developed within the sattras, and thus called Satriya dance, is one of the eight classical dance forms in India.
