Historical Dublin Castle was the venue for the Irish Rare Disease Day event 2016. We were honoured to be part of the growing European movement raising awareness of rare diseases and the continuing effort to have the voice of the rare disease patient heard.

Jennifer was in danger of losing her life, when giving birth to Isabelle, 5 months..when she discovered that her blood type (normally A+) has changed to become One of the RAREST BLOOD of the WORLD's population (0.04%). Jennifer gave her testimonial on RDD 28 Feb, at the Office of the Prime Minister of Malta, in Valletta. She recalled how the dedicated team of the Blood Services & Mater Dei Hospital managed to find 2 blood units from around the world!!!

My brother Sam is someone that I wish everyone had gotten to meet. Sam was born with muscular dystrophy, but instead of feeling sorry for himself, he embraced it. Always with a bright outlook and never asking for help unless he absolutely needed it. Sadly, we lost him 2 days before Thanksgiving in 2012.

You wouldn't know it by looking at her, but Lori has Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC). This is how she chose to raised her hand on Rare Disease Day.
I was diagnosed with FHM1-Familial Hemiplegic Migraine January 18, 2013. What makes it more rare for me is that I represent a whole new variant (mutation) that no one has ever seen before. Over 40 years of dealing with this and they just now were able to put a name to it. As of now there is no known cure and I have tried any and all therapies with no success. My life in the last 5 years is not my norm as the disease is progressing at an alarming rate.
The University of East London's (UEL) External and Strategic Development Service raises their hands in honour of Rare Disease Day. Sarah Dorrian, Lead Partnership Officer at UEL, has an 11 month old son with a rare chromosome disorder called Williams Syndrome.

Estimated to occur in one in one million worldwide, the illness is complex, multi-system and can take years to be properly diagnosed. Lttle is known about this disease or why it develops. High School Students in the Health Science Class from Austin, Texas are learning about Rare Disease Day. We need to educate the future generation of the medical fields.

On the 24-th of February in Ukraine, Lviv the Charitable Foundation of "Sister Dalila" organised a flashmob to the Rare Disease Day. Schoolchildren joined their hands to support people with rare diseases.
I was diagnosed with CIDP 20 months ago and cannot walk without assistance. I want to be able to do that again some day!

EDS Hypermobility is a tissue connective genetic disorder. I have Type 3, there are 7 types. We are all waiting patiently for a cure. Recent genetic research has been exciting and we will not quit hoping! Meanwhile, I count my "spoons" and plan my activities wisely.
