Joe Sarno
1921 - 2010
One of the Titans of the American erotic cinema, Joe Sarno, has died at the age of 89.
I loved him dearly and commend his spirit to the cinematic firmament.
His achievements will far outlive the frailty of the human body and the ephemeral prejudices of taste and morality. For me, he was the consummate filmmaker, a man who drank deeply of the medium’s essence and dared to trade in its most profound truths: simplicity, directness, and an insuperable faith in the power of human presence.
His death last night, Monday, April 26, marks the passage of a robust and innocent genius.
Godspeed, dear friend. The ravages of war can no longer touch you; your long afternoon of creative idleness has come to an end. The runway is once again clear for take-off.
My deepest condolences to Joe’s beloved wife, Peggy Steffans Sarno, to his children, and to the legion of actors and technicians who had the good fortune to work with him. His visionary gifts will not be forgotten.

Charles Joseph "Joe" Clark was the 16th Prime Minister of Canada (for some reason very few Canadian PMs went by their actual first name). Clark served as the head of a minority government from June 1979 to March 1980. By beating Pierre Trudeau, his was the first Progressive Conservative government elected since 1963, but it was only a brief interregnum to a 20 year rule by the Liberals. He was also the youngest person ever elected Prime Minister, having been sworn in the day before he turned 40.
When Clark won the Tory leadership in 1976, he was a relative political unknown who was the comprimise candidate amongst more experienced and senior party members. Because of his relative obscurity when he became party leader, a Toronto newspaper headline for the story covering his selection as party leader read "Joe Who?". This was a nickname that stuck for years.
Clark's government fell when his government introduced its budget bill to the House of Commons in 1980. Clark made the error of governing as if he had a majority and failed to ensure the support of the Créditistes (the federal Social Credit party, which by 1980 was a rump party in Quebec). As a result, the Tories lost a confidence motion and the government was defeated, triggering another general election that was ultimately won by Pierre Trudeau and his Liberals. Ironically, the budget that Trudeau's government introduced upon its reinstatement was more or less the one introduced by Clark's government before it fell.
The Tories had a reputation of being a divided party, which had not been rectified under Clark's leadership. When he lost the 1980 election, dissident factions within the party began to work towards Clark's removal. Ultimately, Clark chose to call a leadership convention for 1983. Clark stood as a candidate for party leadership, but the contest was won by Brian Mulroney.
While Mulroney and Clark were significant rivals and had a strong enmity between them, after the 1984 election that saw Mulroney become Prime Minister, Clark was appointed as Minister of External Affairs. Clark was the first and only ex-Prime Minister to serve as a cabinet minister. In fact, it was Clark's tenure in Cabinet that served to bolster his reputation. While perceived as a weak, inexperienced Prime Minister, Clark became a widely respected and strong Cabinet minister.
Clark retired from politics in 1993. During his time out of Parliament, the Progressive Conservatives were nearly wiped off the political landscape, largely replaced in the west by the Reform Party, while the Parti Quebecois dominated in Quebec. Clark returned to politics at the turn of the millennium, once again becoming leader of the Progressive Conservatives. He was re-elected to Parliament in 2000, albeit as a leader of a party reduced to a few seats in the Maritimes and Quebec. Eventually, his party merged with He stepped down as party leader in 2002. In 2003, the PCs merged with its conservative rivals, the Canadian Alliance, to form a new party (which was named the "Conservative Party of Canada". However, Clark refused to join the new party, and served out the remainder of his term as a Member of Parliament as a "Progressive Conservative", despite the PCs no longer having official party status.

I FINALLY get up close to the sculpture. This sculpture is on top of one of the hills in the arboretum & you can see it from the tollway, I-88. My sister is hanging on to her hat. It was quite windy up on the hill & it began to rain about 10 minutes after I took this photo.

It's been almost 2 years since I took this pic. I loved to read Joe's stuff. He was a real wordsmith which is rare enough but as a spokesman for the forgotten working class in the US, he was unmatched.
I do miss reading his stuff.
My friend Joe needed an updated headshot for work and was willing to brave the wind and rain this morning to come up to DC... we had a good time and got a couple shots I think will serve his purposes well. This one is in the just for fun category... I had a background light making a spot for some background - head differentiation and decided to do a full profile just backlight shot and was very amused by the results! I think its a fun technique to make a very personalized 'icon' or FB profile shot...

A mosaic inlaid in the sidewalk storefront in Kerrytown. Some wonder why there's a 308 address on a building that's definitely not in the 300s. But nah, it's Joe from Joe Parker's Catalpa Inn about 100 years ago. Same Joe as from the old Michigan Glee Club song, Michigan Medley though Joe's prior bar, Joe Parker's Saloon. Tons and tons of background is available here.
