Nepal Janakpur - Jaynagar Railway (NJJR) operated a freight and passenger service in the Eastern Terai. The Janakpur-Jaynagar railway line, which was a narrow gauge line of 762 mm (2ft 6 in) gauge, covered a distance of 52 km and was the only railway line in Nepal. It was operated by the Nepal Transport Corporation. Janakpur Railway 0-6-2 tank N.7 'Gorakhnath' is crossing one of the many small watercourses, near Duhabi, heading a charter train (hence no passengers) from Janakpur Dham to Jaynagar on 13th January 1999. Unfortunately the line is now closed.

Long-disused members of the 762mm gauge Jaynagar Railway steam loco fleet present at Jaynagar depot on 12th January 1999, with 4-6-0 tank No.1 'Pahuspati' (Hunslet W/No.1537 built in 1926) at the front. A dismantled locomotive, possibly Hunslet 4-6-0 tank 'Guhyeshwari' (W/No.1536 built in 1927) can be seen in the centre. Terwijl enkele fietsers op de voorgrond een time-out nemen passeert op de achtergrond een stoomtrein die getrokken wordt door een locomotief van het meterspoortype YP. Bij gebrek aan ruimte in de trein hebben diverse passagiers hun fietsen aan de raamspijlen gehangen. Gelukkig is het profiel van de vrije ruimte groot genoeg.....

0-6-0T N.7 'Gorakhnath' (most probably erroneously bearing Avonside Engine Co. Bristol 2016/1928 worksplates and in fact a later Hunslet-built product) stands at the Janakpur Railway platform at Jaynagar on 12th January 1999. The young observers were more interested in the English and Australian party then in the steam locomotive making a rare appearance there.

In 1994, the Indian Railways transferred five ZDM-5 locomotives to Nepal for operation on the Jaynagar - Janakpur Dham narrow gauge line, following the closure of narrow gauge rail lines in the Nagpur division. On October 28, 1994; the ZDM-5 locomotives began hauling passenger trains, marking the shift from steam traction to diesel traction for Nepal Railway. Over the years, two more locomotives were sent to Nepal. However, after the closure of the narrow gauge line in 2014, two locomotives, 524 and 534, have been left untouched and have remained at the loco shed for over a decade.

The Nepal Railways Corporation Ltd. operates a short narrow gauge railway that extends from India into Nepal. The Jayanagar-Janakpuur-Bijalpura Railway (NJJR) was introduced in Nepal during the Rana period. The current gauge is 762 mm (2 ft 6 in), however there is a long-term plan to covert this to the 'broad gauge' (1,676 mm 5 ft 6 in), compatible with the Indian Railways.
