Dutch Gap Canal. Channel depths and improvements 1892. The canal as dug during the war was to shallow and closed soon after the civil war by a causeway across the upper entrance. This was washed out by the freshet of 1870, about the time when the first appropriation by Congress became available. Per H.D Whitcomb ASCE 1893.
