I've been reading letters home from Louis Agassiz Fuertes. While traveling about Ethopia and East Africa he writes about the heightened self-awareness and emotion that traveling brings - pain, wonder, wry amusement and pure joy. He notes the severe pain over three days of an acacia thorn in his ankle that he "dug quite deep" for, but he can never remove, and he shares his wonder at the discovery of a new species, the amusing arguments of the local natives that are so common to all human nature, and the enveloping brotherhood of a tribe's welcome songs and dances on their arrival in the jungle villages.
I empathize with Fuertes - although my idea of a joyous welcome ceremony involves barstools. Next to birds and art, travel is, for me, a "passion bordering on obsession". I believe to be a birder is to be a traveler. We all have our patch, but we all seek to find the unknown. Commit yourself to an adventure*, and soon, like Fuertes, you too can be discovering the White-crested Helmet Shrike.
So I'm off! :-) Off to my yearly communion with the inhabitants of Nome, Alaska and one especially fine photographer who defines Alaska for me. I'll be giving my usual tours to wildlife photographers, teaching nature photography at University of Alaska, and generally goofing off. The best part is I don't have to worry about acacia thorns.
I hope you have a very pleasant June.
Me...I am traveling again :-)
* Adventure - defined euphemistically in the wonderful movie 180 South as what happens when the unexpected happens.
I haven't been successful finding one of these on migration through Alberta. We would see a couple everyday in Churchill. We spotted this one on the ground and it gave us some nice fly-bys.

A juvenile LONG-TAILED JAEGER. One of a few records for Montana, this obliging bird did a few close passes by me, and at one point dived on me, making a couple short raspy barks at me! Great experience with a species I rarely see! 20 Oct, 2013 Freezeout Lake WMA, Choteau, MT
Long-tailed Jaeger - immature
Stercorarius longicaudus
One of the 7 lifers I got on my first pelagic trip, this immature long-tailed jaeger gave us great looks. It took a little while to ID it but looking at Sibley's I'm pretty sure we're right about it.
