I love this time of year when these magnificent trees bloom.

One of the many Jacaranda trees along the highway through Kula, on the island of Maui. They happened to be one of my wife's favorites, which worked out well since we ended up driving through Kula on our way to the the Kula Botanical Garden, the Haleakala Sunrise, and our trip to Hana.

Although the jacaranda is not native to Australia, the tree is widely planted as an ornamental in the Brisbane area. I was pleased that the jacarandas were all in bloom during my visit.

Seen on my walk. These trees bloom twice a year, but the spring blooms are loveliest.

Jacaranda Tree, possibly one of the most beautiful trees I've seen, fantastic purple colour. These are the flowers laying around the base of the tree, they don't seem to stay on the tree for long before they drop off. Gold Coast Hinterland, Queensland, Australia.

Thirty years ago today my family arrived in Australia. Every year the Jacaranda bloom marks the anniversary of this date which mirrors what my parents and young brother saw as they arrived in Brisbane from South Vietnam after the war.

This is a prime Jacaranda weekend, and as ever the appearance of the purple flowers has me scribbling poetry about the fleeting nature of being. I never really set out to write poetry per se but I do find it amusing and enjoyable. I equate poetry with punk rock actually – neither style is particularly relevant anymore, but they’re both a whole lot of fun to mess around with.

See how they carpet the sidewalk? When you walk through a grove of jacarandas it feels like you've suddenly been transported to Lorien.
