A contrary notion came to mind as I looked up in to the jacaranda canopy - I felt as if the blue sky was the ocean and I was witnessing a lilac-coloured reef.
Jacaranda is not one of our natives, but grows well here, enjoying our climate. Native to South America.

It's snowflakes in the Northern Hemisphere, but in Australia, the purple petals of jacaranda on the footpaths signify that Christmas is near.
(Anthochaera carunculata)
(Jacaranda mimosifolia)
For approximately 3 weeks each year, our town is covered in purple.
The first Jacaranda planted in Australia was most likely in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens in 1864. Walter Hill, Director of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, would have obtained the exotic seeds from a visiting ship that had stopped off in South America. By 1875 about 50 000 seeds and cuttings had been distributed in Queensland. Many of the jacarandas now growing in Brisbane suburbs are the progeny of this first tree which is famously depicted in Godfrey Rivers 1903 painting, Under the Jacaranda.
“Dazzling jacaranda petals covered the sidewalk like a carpet of amethyst velvet. It always amazes me how the trees sit so quietly, unnoticed all spring, until one day it feels as if every single one throughout the city bursts with blossoms at the exact same second.”

Enjoying jacaranda bloom in Sydney, Australia.
Jacaranda mimosifolia...also called Fern Tree, native to Brazil.
In the spring and early summer, this lovely tree produces clusters of lilac and purple flowers.
Photographed outside our branch library.
Something a bit different for me. Around my suburb each November the streets are ablaze in purple as all the Jacaranda trees flower. I wanted to show this profusion of purple, but colour didn't seem to do it. Some Photoshop magic and I have achieved what I wanted.
Either it's a good year for the Jacarandas or I've just been noticing them more than in previous years or both. I was going to say that the ones that are down the street from us have all bloomed out, but tonight I noticed that our next door neighbors have one that is still blooming and beautiful. This tree is where the hummingbirds that I shot yesterday feed. Then they come down to the fountain to get a drink.
