What could I say ? The landscape speaks for itself. When crowds are stacked in Zadar or Split, this place is almost empty. a some people in the port, hike 30min and you'll be on your own. Sounds like the older I get the less I understand people.

Anyway, you want Etretat, Moher ? I rise you Telasica Nature Park.

Featuring crystal clear water, salted water lake and sea urchins. A freaking lot of sea urchins.

The information center of this year is an artwork itself. Located between land and water. A connection between the Water Colors boat tour and Illuminade walk tour. Seen from another angle here.

Amsterdam Light Festival

Amsterdam Light Festival is an annual light art festival in Amsterdam. Artists, architects and (light) designers from all over the world bring their light artworks and installations alive during the festival every winter. The artworks are placed alongside two routes. Each route has their own theme, set of artworks and visitor experience. Water Colors, the boat rout, displays big monumental objects and offers visitors the chance to experience the art from a water perspective. Illuminade, the walking route, shows interactive and innovative installations from upcoming designers in the Plantage neighborhood.

Celebrate winter, with art, light and water!

EYE_BEACON

Artist: UNStudio - Architect bureau

Location: Amstel | Waterlooplein

This artwork is located on a bridge but is inspired by what happens in water, in the deep dark waters of the sea to be exact. Organisms live in darkness and have to create and emit their own light there. This mechanism is known as bioluminescence and is used communicate with other organism or to attracts similar species or prey.

Eye_Beacon from UNStudio consists out of two connected cubes that are arched with each other with a custom made a stretchable fabric. Through LED projections the colors of the artwork change constantly.

Eye_Beacon is also as the central information booth of the festival and the artwork that connects the Water Colors boat rout to the Illuminade walking route.

UNStudio is an architect bureau that was founded by the renowned architects Ben van Berkel and his wife Caroline Bos. Before this the company was called Berkel & Bos Architectenbureau. Did you know that UN stands for ‘United Network’? The bureau exists of a network of specialists in architecture, urban development and infrastructure. You probably know them from the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany.

A pleasant place to sit off for a while in, Liverpool, with lots of amazing architechture and the monument itself to keep the eye busy.

This image, taken by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, shows the colorful "last hurrah" of a star like our sun. The star is ending its life by casting off its outer layers of gas, which formed a cocoon around the star's remaining core. Ultraviolet light from the dying star makes the material glow. The burned-out star, called a white dwarf, is the white dot in the center. Our sun will eventually burn out and shroud itself with stellar debris, but not for another 5 billion years.

Our Milky Way Galaxy is littered with these stellar relics, called planetary nebulae. The objects have nothing to do with planets. Eighteenth- and nineteenth-century astronomers called them the name because through small telescopes they resembled the disks of the distant planets Uranus and Neptune. The planetary nebula in this image is called NGC 2440. The white dwarf at the center of NGC 2440 is one of the hottest known, with a surface temperature of more than 360,000 degrees Fahrenheit (200,000 degrees Celsius). The nebula's chaotic structure suggests that the star shed its mass episodically. During each outburst, the star expelled material in a different direction. This can be seen in the two bowtie-shaped lobes. The nebula also is rich in clouds of dust, some of which form long, dark streaks pointing away from the star. NGC 2440 lies about 4,000 light-years from Earth in the direction of the constellation Puppis.

The material expelled by the star glows with different colors depending on its composition, its density and how close it is to the hot central star. Blue samples helium; blue-green oxygen, and red nitrogen and hydrogen.

Trinity College, Cambridge. The college itself dates to 1546, but this part of the college is the outside of the buildings framing New Court (also known as King's Court) which was built in 1825 in a style inspired the medieval and Tudor buildings of the town, more to match the surroundings than to be modern.

European roller (Coracias garrulus)

From the cycle - Birds of Europe. You can see more my photos from this cycle by entering "Pawel's Birds of Europe" in the search box.

It is a bird of warm, dry, open country with scattered trees, preferring lowlands, but occurs up to 1000 m (3300 ft) in Europe and 2000 m (6600 ft) in Morocco. Oak and pine woodlands with open areas are prime breeding habitat, but farms, orchards and similar areas with mixed vegetation are also used. In Africa, a similarly wide range of dry, open land with trees is used. It winters primarily in dry, wooded savanna and bushy plains, where it typically nests in tree holes.

The European roller chick will vomit a foul-smelling orange liquid onto itself to deter a predator. The smell also warns the parents on their return to the nest.

I have to say, I love that Lego has started making Disney figures and sets! It brings back tons of VHS memories for me, so when it came time for Lego to finally release the first Disney CMF wave a few months ago--I was well prepared.

I had built this at the start of the year as a late addition to my Brickworld Chicago 2016 showing, and then waited eagerly for the release of the Maleficent figure. Luckily I secured one about a month or so before Brickworld, otherwise this build would have been a mess! This was the only vignette I brought to BW, and incidentally, it also happened to win Best Vignette; a category I've been trying to take the gold in for years. And yes, I am still incredibly bitter about last years' failure by the way. It's a tough category. Although to be honest this juicy victory has gone over my head, as the build itself was such a small fraction of what I brought with me.

I had, and I suppose still do, intend this to be the first in a line of Disney Villain Vignettes...granted it'll be a rather slow roll out considering the limited villain selection at the moment. So this vig will live on for now, as the collection grows.

But for now, it's time to continue destroying my Bat-collection and start rebuilding for next year. I've got my layout theme set, and I'm super excited to jump into unexpected territory.

----

Fun Build Facts:

--Maleficent is wearing four cape pieces and Man-Bat arms to help sell the transformation affect.

--There are somewhere around 500 tooth pieces (small & medium) used to create the wall of thorns.

--To form its shape, the neck of the dragon utilizes a flex tube with an inserted flattened out paper clip. This allows it to be bent into positions without moving back. Tip I picked up on MOCpages many years ago.

--This build is again an instance where I continue to use Lego Dark Purple after completely swearing off the accursed color.

“No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main." --Dean John Donne, Clergyman and esteemed English poet.

With outstretched arms, the figure of Christ the King faces the Ponte 25 de Abril and the city of Lisbon. It stands on a 75 m high base. This is 113 m above the Tagus. The statue itself is 28m tall, making it the seventh tallest statue of Christ in the world. The monument is one of the tallest structures in Portugal and the most important attraction in Almada. Because of its height, the statue is one of the best viewpoints of Lisbon. Along with Fátima and Santiago de Compostela, it is one of the three most important pilgrimage sites on the Iberian Peninsula.

When the Archbishop of Lisbon Dom Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira visited the then capital of Brazil in 1934, the Cristo Redentor (Rio de Janeiro), inaugurated in 1931 (30 m tall) inspired him to build a replica in Lisbon. He managed to convince the Portuguese episcopacy of his plan. At an April 20, 1940 gathering in Fátima, the bishops vowed to erect the statue if God spared Portugal from World War II.

After the end of the war, on December 18, 1949, construction of the statue began. The Christ sculpture was made by Portuguese sculptor Francisco Franco de Sousa. Portuguese architect António Lino designed the base. After around ten years of construction, the statue was inaugurated on Pentecost Sunday, May 17, 1959. 300,000 people attended, including the Archbishops of the Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro and the Archdiocese of Lourenço Marques. Pope John XXIII was not present and sent his greetings. A plan to expand the site was approved in 1984 to mark the 25th anniversary of the inauguration. A reception center with administrative buildings and a chapel was built. The buildings were renovated in 2001/02. On May 17, 2007, the Sala João XXIII was inaugurated with eight paintings on the theme of Pax in Terris. On the same day, in front of the statue, the Cruz Alta was laid, which had previously been in the Sanctuary of Fátima.

Thanks for looking at my photo, I really appreciate it!

Nearly two years ago in North Cornwall, the world presented itself thus.

There’s something strangely comforting about winter weather on a beach; sand and sky fully command your attention, until that is, one’s thoughts turn inevitably to a nice hearty soup and some fresh bread.

Mount Kailash itself is known in the Tibetan language as Gang Ti-se and informally as Gang Rinpoche ("Precious Snow Mountain"), to the Bon as Yungdrung Gutsek ("Nine stacked Svastikas"). Though only 6714 m high, it stands quite alone like a great white sentinel guarding the main routes into Tibet from India and Nepal in the south and west.

Traditionally a pilgrim undertakes the 52-km trekking cirquit or circumambulation (khorlam) around Mount Kailash commencing at Darchen (4575 m) and crossing the 5630 m Dolma La pass on the second day of the three-day walk. This is followed by a trek of the same duration around the beautiful turquiose Lake Manasarovar known in the Tibetan language as Mapham Yutso མ་ཕམ་གཡུ་མཚོ།

The train itself in the picture betrays that this photo was photographed in today's time. Arrival of the Regional Bahn from Kassel, right on time but with very few passengers. In the end, an old lady with a poodle could give this image something extra, but it was not there, but the old platform lighting dating from the Bundesbahn time and the old still in intact buildings where the Bahnhofs Mission is housed.

Sometimes the color is not important. The message isn't there in the rainbow. It is spoken through the place itself. I mostly realize that when I'm long gone, home, developing my pictures. When I try to find the place again, it's not there anymore. The spirit has moved away, I disturbed its sanctuary.

2024-09-10, Day 4

An unnamed creek that drains the ice fields surrounding Mount Hoge fans out to reveal the many pathways chosen over the course of hundreds of spring floods as the water readies itself to join the Donjek River which is out of the frame to the right, Kluane National Park, Yukon.

Once the Glacier first came into view, its vast terminus dominated the landscape for miles as we pushed our way southward along the River’s east bank following game trails that bore the signs of Grizzly, Moose, and what were likely Wolf tracks. Though the days remained long, evening began to introduce herself, trailing tresses of lengthening shadow and rich colorful tones. We traveled further than expected on the previous day, so we thought to make camp in a place with a captivating view and stop early enough to allow time to explore the River and the place where the ice arrived at the end of its tortuous and crushing journey.

On the terrain east of the river where we walked, swales filled with sedge and lined with willow ran in narrow strips between heaved, billowing ridges comprised of moraine, cast-off material flung by the immense, sculpting artistry of the mountains themselves. Cresting one of these hills we encountered the scene here, where the ravages of the spring floods presented themselves overtly, leaving no doubt that powerful currents shape this place and give it its life.

After descending through the golden foreground trees and negotiating the cut-bank to gain access to the floodplain, we searched the opposite bench for a place to pitch the tent. Rather than immediately finding anything suitable for the tent, I noticed the print of a Grizzly’s rear foot hardened into the mud - it was more than a foot long (30+ cm) and likely 7-8 inches wide (18-20 cm). Clearly made by a large creature. Just a reminder to make good choices while living amongst dear Ursus, nothing more. We pitched our tent in the elevated meadow above the opposite side of the creek, then hung the food a good distance away off amongst the spruce trees. Finally, we followed the floodplain to the River to find out just what the ice and water had wrought.

I've been a bit tardy catching up with Flickr after the holidays, but I hope to see folks' recent images soon!

Field Forgetmenot it was growing at the side of my house in a crack in the tarmac it will get trodden on if I leave it so I pulled it up and planted it in a stone trough in the garden where it will at least survive to hopefully flower again.

A delicate vine wraps itself around steel guy wire, turning man made infrastructure into its personal ladder to the sky. These vibrant spring leaves dancing along a guy wire at Suryanelli remind us that beauty can emerge from unlikely partnerships and unlikely spaces, one just has to keep looking. Photography is all about seeing and framing. The dreamy bokeh and drizzle adds that perfect touch of magic to this simple moment. Sometimes strength and tenderness coexist in perfect harmony.

This moth is less than half the size of my little finger nail and so difficult to portray. The daisy it's sitting on is Mexican Fleabane (Erigeron Karvinskianus) and is tiny in itself. It was an opportunity too good to miss as I haven't seen this little moth in my garden before.

Looking out across Loch Ness towards Cherry Island, an old wooden boat dominates the foreground, stark in contrast to all the others about it. I imagine this old boat has served itself well over the years, it seems a shame that it has now been left to languish by the shore, seen here from a layby off the A82 just north of Fort Augustus.

O little town

of solitudes

here the wind

gathers itself

and swirls elms

autumn oaks

and here

along the river

hills rise

and ripple

west toward the prairie

a horizon away. Here

we sing with sparrows

read the jewelweeds'

runes and here

we dream

new dreams

after old ones

break down.

I will never find

my voice or lose

my discontent. And

some nights I pray

until my tongue bleeds.

A brief reprieve in the rain on this day, not so dramatic light but the scene itself is unbelievably vast and very, very high.

Basel calls itself the Cultural Capital of Switzerland. Among others, there is the Museum Jean Tinguely Basel, and the Zoological Garden. Jean Tinguely was a Swiss painter and sculptor. He is best known for his sculptural machines or kinetic art, in the Dada tradition; known officially as metamechanics.

Last one for now - the great thing about Wednesday's storm (other than the show itself) was the fact it lasted so long. It meant I was able to get round a few different spots to see the northern lights in a range of locations.

This is my favourite little copse of trees in Lanark. I've photographed them in all sorts of conditions, but never ever did I envisage a shot like this :-)

This panorama was merged from 5 single shots taken at sunrise that was already announcing itself visibly. I was working with the Leica M10 and the beautiful Zeiss Distagon 1,4/35. Two huge giants of Wallis are clearly visble here: Matterhorn is standing in the center of the image, Dent Blanche can well be seen in the left half of the picture.

As some of you know. I have been without a camera for some time now... each time I would think I was going to choose that next baby. A financial obstacle would always get in the way.

Awhile ago... a fellow Flickr friend made an incredibly generous offer to give me his old camera to use. Free of charge, no strings attached... at the time, I had politely declined. The offer alone was enough to bring a tear to my eyes.

"You are a sweetie Brent"

I eventually decided to take him up on this wonderful offer... the camera arrived this past weekend. (and) I have a series of shots I did Sunday that I will post this week.

But first, I wanted to start my new Flickr life with a few photos featuring the camera itself... some of you may recognize it. Please check out his photostream. Brent and the rest of the gang in Winnipeg are quite special people.

As for my financial situation... things are much smoother now and I even have a camera I've been thinking about. But, right now, more than anything, I want to thank Brent for making it possible for me to get an early start on this.
