I am not sure but I think that the irreplaceable derailleur hanger of my Trek Madone 5.2 from about 2006 is bent inwards a little. I bent it out but I don't seem to be able to bend it out far enough without making it flaired outwards at the bottom. I find it difficult to get into the highest gear (the smallest cog, furthest from the bike) even when the gear line is floppy. It could just be that the gear wire has friction (I have changed it and added graphite), or that the spring in the derailleur is weak, or that I am failing to adjust it properly but in any event adding a 2mm washer between the derailleur and the hanger made it easy to get into this top gear. The problem was that the bolt only then went about 3/5 of the way into the hanger and I was in danger of de-threading the hanger.
Since my hanger is of the old non-replaceable type I am afraid of bending it again in crash anyway. I read that one can use a "sacrificial bolt." I don't know where people purchase sacrificial (weaker) derailleur bolts, and since these bolts are M10 with a narrow 1.mm pitch (normal M10 threads are 1.5mm and ISO narrow threads are 1.25mm) and since it has a long unthreaded shank (?) it was not all that easy to source until I found double banjo bleed bolts (above right) which are aluminium, hollow, holed, and about the right length. The non-bleed variety are a little shorter and may also work. Banjo bolts do not have a groove just below the thread for the C-Clip as does the original Shimano on the left. Since the banjo bolt is hollow I could not make a grove of that depth. So i need to hold the banjo bolt in place (and the spring inside the derailleur taught) with a nut.
The above nut taken from a wheel, which also has an M10 1mm pitch thread, and wheels can be used to straighten derailleur hangers, but the nut has too large an outer diameter (about 16mm?) and gets snarled on the B tension screw of the rear derailleur. I have some smaller 3mm thick pipe lock nuts on order. Since the threaded part of the bolt is longer. Using the nut I should be able to put the derailleur out a little further from the bike to rejuvenate the spring. Since it is aluminium and hollow it will provide some sacrificial protection to the non-replaceable hanger. I will put one on my new Scot CR1 Team Issue too.
