Bilbry Sportswear’s "Clean Ocean Surf Festival" Started in 1987 It was the largest "amateur" surfing event on the East Coast. Created & ran by David & Dana Cummings with irreplaceable crew of volunteers. The original reason for this contest was "Clean Ocean Awareness" for back then NJ and the entire east coast & west coast was subjected to beach closing do to polluted water. This contest also help get NJ's Clean Ocean Action off the ground for they were just starting out at that time as well. We then brought on American Oceans Campaign which was a world wide organization advocating clean ocean laws that are in place today because of our efforts The culmination of this contest was when we had American oceans Campaign spokes person Mr. Ted Danson of the television hit series "CHEERS" come to Avalon and do the award presentations of our contest and speak about what we can do to help fight against ocean pollution. This contest is still run today as the Brendan Borek. Mrs. Borek & Mrs. Kaurterman approached us with helping them put together a surf contest for Brendan who was an avid young surfer in town that was diagnosed with cancer and they wanted to hold a contest as a day of celebration for a sport Brendan loved. At the time Dana was carrying our first child and we thought rather than start an entirely new contest use the one we started for everything was already in place. And this is how and why the Brendan Borek Surf Contest exists today.

Trees of such great stature have many irreplaceable roles in the forest community. They support an abundance of plants and animals, act as windbreaks, and help prevent soil erosion. However, the importance of older-growth trees is often overlooked, as in the case of mahogany trees, which are extensively logged in tropical regions throughout the world for their high quality wood.

Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark, in the hopeless swamps of the approximate, the not-quite, the not-yet, the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish, in lonely frustration for the life you deserved, but have never been able to reach. Check your road and the nature of your battle. The world you desired can be won, it exists, it is real, it is possible, it's yours.

The purpose of historic preservation is to save our past & our historic environments. By identifying maintaining, interpreting, & protecting these irreplaceable historic & cultural resources we can safeguard the integrity of our historic sites.

Historic preservation is also an important aspect in the process of community development. It advances an understanding of the factors that contributed to the growth & development of Alaska & tells the story of the struggles of our predecessors as they settled our communities.

The Gastineau Channel Historical Society was first established in 1956 to promote the history of the Gastineau Channel area. It reorganized in 2004 to focus on stabilization & preservation of the historic mining site in Last Chance Basin for the purpose of public access, education, & enjoyment.

The Society's vision for this unique historical setting is to provide for current & future generations an accurate portrayal of the scale of the mining operation & the story of the Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Company & other gold mines in the area that provided a stable economy for Juneau from 1912 to 1944.

In 1995 the Society began operating the Last Chance Mining Museum & Historical Park. Walking this historic site in search of its historical significance requires a bit of imagination. Not unlike many historic sites, most of the original buildings & structures have been removed or suffer from years of deterioration. The Society volunteers have spent considerable effort to preserve a few of the remaining buildings & structure that give sense of the historic mining activities that took place here.

It has been the policy of the City & Borough of Juneau to identify & protect our community's historic & archaeological resources. Juneau's Comprehensive Plan recognizes that. "The general character of Juneau as a whole is enhanced by the very existence of these historic neighborhoods."

The Mission of the Society is to advance the cultural significance of the gold mining era & preserve for future generations this remarkable piece of CBJ real estate. The Society works in collaboration with the Juneau-Douglas City Musuem to provide a board base of understanding of the great gold mines that supported the community for many years,

By preserving & promoting the rich history of Last Chance Basin we can honor the people who lived here & whore families stayed to build the Juneau-Douglas community.

This beautiful, irreplaceable piece of ancient woodland would be totally destroyed if plans to build a new section of the M4 at Newport go ahead. This would be contrary to the Welsh Government's own planning policy, which states that ancient woodland is irreplaceable and should not be destroyed.
