take me to memories we won't erase

cheers, shanghai. the past three years have been unforgettable. riddled with so many life lessons and irreplaceable people. here's to the nights we felt alive--here's to the conglomeration of cultures fused into a metropolitan experience that, regardless of the time spent here, never fails to leave a mark, like an internal burn mark that never completely heals and instead leaves a fading line across your heart. that somewhere so foreign could so quickly become home will always be inexplainable, but it's a fact that doesn't require any reason, and maybe that's the way i want it to stay.

tagged by farisia for five facts! :)

1. i love the way the library smells. i can already imagine the sweet smells of the pages of old books, the faint smell of coffee, running my fingers over the slightly raised printed text.

2. goals for the summer: get a job, check out three books a week at the library and finish them whilst in delaware, RUN, and learn how to cook.

3. i have so many drafts in my e-mail that i don't have the courage to send.

4. i want to take dance lessons. or kickboxing.

5. i'm currently saving up to buy my own dslr&lens so for the next couple months might have to recycle old pictures till i find a camera i can use :)

The Berkeley is an 1898 steam ferryboat that operated for 60 years on San Francisco Bay. A California State Historic Landmark, and a National Historic Landmark. She is, in a word, "irreplaceable."

Berkeley’s importance to the Maritime Museum cannot be overstated. Aboard the vessel are the museum's offices, a major maritime research library, workshop, model shop, the museum store, special events venue with room for 800 guests, and numerous dry storage and archive areas.

The ferryboat's lower deck and main deck contain many important exhibits and displays, including her fully restored triple expansion steam engine, which, although no longer steam-operated, today performs for visitors with the aid of hydraulics and compressed air. Berkeley's engine room is unique worldwide. During the 1906 San Francisco earthquake Berkeley carried thousands of survivors to safety. Her captain and crew, not knowing the fate of their own families, worked night and day to help victims escape the burning shores of San Francisco. Their unwavering and unselfish efforts saved many, many lives. The upper deck of the ferryboat has played host to thousands of weddings, corporate and other special events since her arrival in San Diego in 1973. Berkeley has a unique historical and architectural significance that is reminiscent of the Victorian Age. She is the finest example of a 19th century ferryboat afloat. The Berkeley’s hull underwent a revolutionary hull restoration process during the spring of 2003 that is expected to last for 50 years and may serve as the benchmark for the preservation of historic iron and steel hulled ships around the world.

Timpanogos Cave National Monument is a cave system in the Wasatch Mountains in American Fork Canyon near American Fork, Utah, in the United States. The 1.5 mile trail to the cave is steep at several points, but paved and wide, so the cave opening is accessible to most. Tours are run when the monument is open, usually from May through October depending on snow conditions.

There are three main chambers accessible in the tour: Hansen Cave, Middle Cave, and Timpanogos Cave. Many colorful cave features or speleothems can be seen. Among the most interesting are the helictites, which are like hollowed straws of rock. They are thought to be formed when water travels through the tube and then evaporates, leaving a small mineral deposit at the end. Other speleothems found in the cave include: cave bacon, cave columns, flowstone, cave popcorn, cave drapery, helictites, stalactites and stalagmites.

The NSW Office of Environment and Heritage described Leard State Forest as having “irreplaceable, ecologically unique values, including the highest quality remnant patch of grassy woodland on the heavily-cleared Liverpool Plains.” The offset area agreed in the approval of the Maules Creek coal mine does not support the critically endangered woodland the mine will clear, the mapping of the offsets by the proponent has been shown to be incorrect, and there are no areas available in the landscape that could replace or offset the “irreplaceable” and “unique” forest that will be cleared under the approval.

Photos taken in the final weeks of the Old Court House Hotel in Gorey, Jersey. Plus some others from the past. Our second home for over a quarter of a century. The OCH helped create enduring happy memories for countless numbers of people who returned year after year...and you can't put a price on that. Richard, Paul, Karen and co gave brilliant service to tens of thousands, sprinkling a touch of magic in this wonderful location. The Old Court House Hotel and the team of people who made it what it was are, quite simply, unique and irreplaceable. Old dilapidating wooden houses, few minutes from the city centre. For me, they have its irreplaceable charm. I love even the most miserable. In few years they will all disappear.

Crumbling chapel in St. Louis. I couldn't get any closer than this because the floor had gaping holes in it (you can see some of the holes on the lower left). This sanctuary wall, under the sky, is one of the most amazing abandoned sites I've ever seen.

Bilbry Sportswear’s "Clean Ocean Surf Festival" Started in 1987 It was the largest "amateur" surfing event on the East Coast. Created & ran by David & Dana Cummings with irreplaceable crew of volunteers. The original reason for this contest was "Clean Ocean Awareness" for back then NJ and the entire east coast & west coast was subjected to beach closing do to polluted water. This contest also help get NJ's Clean Ocean Action off the ground for they were just starting out at that time as well. We then brought on American Oceans Campaign which was a world wide organization advocating clean ocean laws that are in place today because of our efforts The culmination of this contest was when we had American oceans Campaign spokes person Mr. Ted Danson of the television hit series "CHEERS" come to Avalon and do the award presentations of our contest and speak about what we can do to help fight against ocean pollution. This contest is still run today as the Brendan Borek. Mrs. Borek & Mrs. Kaurterman approached us with helping them put together a surf contest for Brendan who was an avid young surfer in town that was diagnosed with cancer and they wanted to hold a contest as a day of celebration for a sport Brendan loved. At the time Dana was carrying our first child and we thought rather than start an entirely new contest use the one we started for everything was already in place. And this is how and why the Brendan Borek Surf Contest exists today.

This beautiful, irreplaceable piece of ancient woodland would be totally destroyed if plans to build a new section of the M4 at Newport go ahead. This would be contrary to the Welsh Government's own planning policy, which states that ancient woodland is irreplaceable and should not be destroyed. Late Winter has me snowed under into some kind of creative hibernation. My studio keeps winking at me, but I continually deny its charms, returning instead to the arms of Beyonce, whose single "Irreplaceable" I've had in a freakishly relentless loop that is broken only to watch forensic-type TV shows or read history books and science magazines. When I pick up the lap steel, only really bizarre (and loud) stuff pours forth for a few minutes, then I grow sleepy like a brown bear. Tomorrow may be different.

PERSONAL FUN FACT: This Cameron is perhaps the most special Bratz Boyz doll in my collection. He will always have an irreplaceable spot in my heart, that no other doll can quite touch. Let's take a time machine back to early 2012. I had been collecting dolls again for about a year. Dad had been super supportive of my reignited interest, although I had taken a five year hiatus from dollies as a teen. Most of all, he seemed to take a shine to Bratz. I'm not sure if it was because they made me so happy, if he remembered how much I loved them as a kid, or if it was because of simply how ridiculous the dolls look. I think it was honestly a combination of all three. He was always helping me hunt for Bratz...sometimes he'd do his own research on Craigslist or eBay, seeing if he could find me deals. I was working on my own Bratz book at the time (strictly for my own use...not to publish). I'd spend evenings in the living room, while he was watching television, working on this guide. Sometimes I'd tell him about a new doll that was released. That's how I found out about the True Hope Bratz. I was glancing at different store websites to see what new dolls needed to be added to the book. I saw a promo for the upcoming True Hope collection. Immediately they caught my attention. My mom had passed away from cancer ten years before, and Dad had his battle with it in 2010. This concept pulled my heart strings. I also noted that Cameron would be part of the line...which was even more intriguing. I mentioned to Dad that there were Bratz dolls coming out within a few months that were bald for cancer survivors, and that some of the money from each sale went to certain foundations. Dad immediately responded, "That sounds right up your alley. I'll take you to buy the dolls the day they come out." That had been the plan, but things didn't play out that way. Shortly after that conversation, Dad ended up being hospitalized for two months (he was shuffled between the hospital and and a rehab facility). He would never come home again. Dad passed away at the end of May in 2012, shortly before the True Hope Bratz came out. In the wake of the devastation, getting Cameron was not a priority. But a few weeks after their release, Colleen said we should get Cameron. We both knew that is what Dad would have wanted. We made a special trip to Toys 'R' Us sometime in late June. I also ended up picking out the Moxie Boyz Jaxson doll who was part of the True Hope line too. No matter how many years have passed, I still always think of Dad when I look at Cameron. I wish things had played out differently, and that we could have picked this doll out together. But I know that having Cameron in my collection still honors that memory, and I'm very grateful to have him.

"Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark in the hopeless swamps of the not-quite, the not-yet, and the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish in lonely frustration for the life you deserved and have never been able to reach. The world you desire can be won. It exists.. it is real.. it is possible.. it's yours" ~ Ayn Rand
