Why? Because I say they are! They are the best I could come up with this week. I kept the fisherman in this picture because he was actually doing something - that is casting. It was gently raining a lot of the time when I took these pictures in Linear (Philbrick) Park today.

How I celebrated my seventy-fifth birthday.

Monday evening, June 16, 2025. I celebrated my 75th birthday by launching the canoe at LaSalle's Landing across the road from BayCreek Paddling Center. I paddled out on Irondequoit Bay for a bit then explored nooks and crannies on the creek. A little over an hour, so a couple of miles. Low 70sF. I love padding this time of day day as the sun drops behind the hills.

Back under the bridge.

All in all, I paddled about five miles that day. I took millstream fork instead of the main channel, paddling up through the wetlands, under two bridges, and into Ellison Park. My way was soon blocked by deadfalls across the narrowing creek. I turned around paddled under the two bridges and back into the wetlands.

I was fascinated by the leaves that had collected on this one rock as Irondequoit Creek swirled by.

Unplanned double exposure that worked. I had turned around and was heading back downstream. I figured I had gone far enough for the first time out. The temperature was in the upper 80sF.

On the creek with Phoenix 200.

Phoenix 200 is a new, experimental film from Harmon Technology (Ilford). I've heard enough praise and panning of it that I bought some to try out for myself. It's interesting stuff. I had Scott's Photo develop and scan it. I Then I scanned the negatives myself for comparison. My scanner software was not at all sure what to do with it. It took some finagling. In both cases it comes out heavy on the greens. Tonal range is not wonderful.

I have a roll from the Ondu 135 Pinhole Camera waiting to be developed. We shall see.

I stopped by one of my old haunts in Ellison Park on the way back from church a week or so ago. In times of higher water I have both launched and recovered canoes at this landing on Irondequoit Creek. The creek meanders through the park on its way to Irondequoit Bay further north.

Wednesday, June 4 - Back on the water!

I didn't realize how much I had missed it.

This is the first photograph I have posted from the canoe or kayak since 2013. I thought I had been out more recently than that, but maybe not. I remembered how much fun it is taking photographs from a solo canoe. As soon as you put the paddle down the canoe starts drifting and turning. I had to level this one a fair bit.

Following the geese.

I came up on an extended family of Canada Geese. I gave them a wide berth so as not to cause any more disruption than necessary. They moved further to the side but mostly ignored me; they are used to paddlers on the creek.

The wonderful New York scenery and the playfulness of the water will make you feel great. The Linear Park section of Irondequoit Creek in New York is 0.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II(III) section. This is an extremely short stretch so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the river in one stretch.

Briefly about the general area:

The annual rainfall here at Irondequoit Creek is about average; throughout September this area sees the most rain, and the driest month is January.

During the days of summer, highs commonly are in the 80's at Irondequoit Creek with nighttime lows in the 60's. Through the winter the highs are usually in the 30's, and after the sun is down through the winter temperatures at Irondequoit Creek plunge into the 10's.

Bay Creek Paddling Center was closed by time I paddled past. The ducks were enjoying the quiet. When I drifted in closer they stood up but did not appear particularly alarmed.
