my backyard garden is in full bloom and I am loving it.
this deep purple one is my favorite. Several more should bloom in the next few days.
Last evening, K brought home an armload of vibrant spring flowers for me. He chose a gigantic bouquet of irises, stargazer lilies and carnations because he knew that the flowers would lift my spirits. It was such a lovely, extravagant gesture and so typical of him. He understands the stress of working amidst tight deadlines and he knows how frustrated I am to be shackled to my desk when the blue skies and brilliant spring colours beckon me outdoors. Needless to say, I am overjoyed to have masses of spring blossoms adorning every available surface.

Jackie found this one for me at Wislye. I often don't see blue flowers in green foliage unless they're up at eye level.
This bearded iris (Iris germanica) can be found in the Kansas State University Gardens. Unfortunately, bearded iris will not thrive in Florida. Instead, try blue flag iris (Iris virginica), Louisiana iris (Iris fulva), or African iris (Dietes vegeta).

The plant is named after the goddess 'Iris' because of the beauty and variety of colours in the flowers of the genus. In Greek mythology, Iris was the messenger goddess who travelled on the rainbow path between the realms of humans and the gods. The flower ‘iris’ indicates a message; a promise of hope. Iris is popularly associated with wisdom and valour. Iris was the goddess of the rainbow, the messenger of the Olympian gods; the daughter of Electra and Thaumas. She was often represented as a messenger of Zeus and Hera.
"Now [the sea-god] Thaumas married a daughter of deep-running Okeanos, Elektra, and she bore him swift-footed Iris, the rainbow, and the Harpyiai of the lovely hair." - Hesiod, Theogony 265 (www.theoi.com/Nymphe/NympheElektra1.html)
