I have wanted to draw this for a while, the inspiration for this letter comes from a visit to the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum, Two Rivers, WI. This is the original photo where the character comes from.

 

Jim Moran the museum director tells me the type face is Aldine Expanded.
