iPhone 8 Plus-3729.1

Block Island field 2018

For anyone dreaming of a simple life, you may want to consider moving to Giethoorn in the Netherlands.

This idyllic village has no roads, and the only access is by water over the many beautiful canals or on foot over its wooden arch bridges. The locals use punters (boats) to get around and cars have to remain outside the village.

Located in the province of Overijssel, there are 4 miles of canals and farmhouses with thatched roofs dating back to the 18th century.

It's no surprise Giethoorn is a popular tourist attraction and has been given the nickname ’Little Venice’ of the Netherlands. Cycling and sailing as well as a guided canal tour are some of the many ways to discover its rustic charm.

The village was founded by a group of fugitives from the Mediterranean region around AD 1230. It became well known in 1958 when it was featured in the film Fanfare, made by Dutch filmmaker Bert Haanstra.

It is a fresh autumn evening in November, just take a walk along the river Kromme Rijn, which literally curves around the village Odijk.

The temperature drops and the sun disappears behind the horizon and leaves a beautiful orange glow on the water. It feels like winter is coming.

Quickly taken out my iPhone 8 Plus of my inside pocket and take this picture.

The Leersumse Veld (field) is a nature reserve in the southeast of the Dutch province of Utrecht. The area above the town of Leersum consists of forest, heathland and three fens. The 80-hectare area is part of the Leersum Forestry Department of Staatsbosbeheer (state forest management).

Peat was formed in wet places over the course of centuries. Around 1800 this was excavated for peat. This created the Leersumse Plassen (lakes).

...have a great rest of the weekend!

Earlier this year, after a near thirty minute walk to this spot, I realised I had left my camera battery happily charging away in my office! GBRf 60087 was due in about five minutes so I got out my iPhone 8 Plus and took it from the fence line.

Amazing instrument the iPhone, I should take more with it.

De Vere Hotel Tortworth, Gloucestershire. Much retired Victorian country house and now hotel.

The iPhone 8 is so good that I find myself rarely using my Sony RX100 or Canon 80D anymore. They have their niches still, but the quality of images off of the iPhone 8 are so superb, and of course, convenient. The portrait mode, which uses two cameras and software to create dof, is also pretty cool. Image quality is a function of lens AND software, and phones are winning that competition. Maybe this is an artist's answer to Joshu's nearly 1,500 year old koan, still used today by some Zen meditators.

The unusual, if not unique, 12th Century hexagonal keep of Conisborough Castle, seen from a train between Sheffield and Doncaster. The castle ruins guard the Dearne Valley. See en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conisbrough_Castle.
