5 August [O.S. 24 July] 1844 – 29 September 1930) was a Russian realist painter.

He was the most renowned Russian artist of the 19th century, when his position in the world of art was comparable to that of Leo Tolstoy in literature.

He played a major role in bringing Russian art into the mainstream of European culture. His major works include "Barge Haulers on the Volga" (1873), "Religious Procession in Kursk Province" (1883) and "Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks" (1880–91).

Repin was born in Chuguyev, in Kharkov Governorate, Russian Empire (now Chuhuiv in Ukraine, Kharkiv Region) into a family of "military settlers".

His father traded horses and his grandmother ran an inn. He entered military school to study surveying.

Soon after the surveying course was cancelled, his father helped Repin to become an apprentice with Ivan Bunakov, a local icon painter, where he restored old icons and painted portraits of local notables through commissions.

In 1863 he went to St. Petersburg Art Academy to study painting but had to enter Ivan Kramskoi preparatory school first. He met fellow artist Ivan Kramskoi and the critic Vladimir Stasov during the 1860s, and his wife, Vera Shevtsova in 1872 (they remained married for ten years).

In 1874–1876 he showed at the Salon in Paris and at the exhibitions of the Itinerants' Society in Saint Petersburg. He was awarded the title of academician in 1876.

In 1880 Repin travelled to Zaporizhia to gather material for the 1891 "Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks." His "Religious Procession in Kursk Province" was exhibited in 1883, and "Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan" in 1885.

In 1892 he published the "Letters on Art" collection of essays. He taught at the Higher Art School attached to the Academy of Arts from 1894.

In 1898 he purchased an estate, Penaty (the Penates), in Kuokkala, Finland (now Repino, Saint Petersburg).

In 1901 he was awarded the Legion of Honour. In 1911 he traveled with his common-law wife Natalia Nordman to the World Exhibition in Italy, where his painting "17 October 1905" and his portraits were displayed in their own separate room.

In 1916 Repin worked on his book of reminiscences, "Far and Near," with the assistance of Korney Chukovsky.

He welcomed the February Revolution of 1917, but was rather skeptical towards the October Revolution.

Soviet authorities asked him a number of times to come back, he remained in Finland for the rest of his life.

Celebrations were held in 1924 in Kuokkala to mark Repin's 80th birthday, followed by an exhibition of his works in Moscow.

In 1925 a jubilee exhibition of his works was held in the Russian Museum in Leningrad. Repin died in 1930 and was buried at the Penates.

Fresh dry hop, herbal character is provided by the mix of challenger and first gold hops. The use of crystal malt in the grist gives a satisfying toffee/caramel note and the addition of a little black malt adds just enough astringency to give a clean dry finish.

What do you get when you cross a hazy, New England IPA with a bit of West Coast IPA? Geographically you'd be somewhere in the middle making it a Prairie IPA! At least, so says Wildeye Prairie boy brewmaster. This IPA possesses just enough bitterness to properly balance the juicy hops and refreshing prairie malt character.

Brewed with: Crystal Clear North Shore Water, Prairie Malts, North American Hops, Yeast

Went down well!

Only 330mls so not so bad..

"This light, golden classic has been subverted with new world hops to create an explosion of flavour. Bursts of caramel and tropical fruit with an all-out riot of grapefruit, pineapple and lychee, precede a spiky bitter finish"

South Africa has recently come out with some very intriguing hop varieties and Powell Brewing was able to get their hands on some. This is the first in a series of South African Hopped IPAs. The “African Queen” variety used in this IPA has characteristics of berries, stone fruit, and melons, with the presence of a slight chilli spice. Combined with a malt base of Pilsner, Wheat, and Oats, the resulting beer is well rounded, smooth, fruity, and super crushable.

A bit of the spicy character of a Wit, with the hops of an IPA

this was one of the most expensive beers !

Backcountry signature IPA is made in the east coast style. This style of IPA is characterized by a light malt profile with a big pulpy body that is there to complement the intense juicy character coming from the hops.

The flavour starts off light and builds into a well bodied, complex IPA flavour. A blend of west coast pine, tropical fruit and a bit of caramel make for a big and flavourful beer with the hop profile making for a unique and rather delicious taste adventure. The complexity also seems to mask the high alcohol content while keeping the rather thick and creamy texture that comes with a big IPA. This is a very nice IPA and steps things a cut above for Parallel 49 Brewing.

Kompaan - Foreign Legion No1

Early 2017 joey was the first to join the legion. a young american starting out as a rookie, or in joey’s case - a ‘greenhorn’. But he’s gung-ho on showing everyone his persistence, and with the best ingredients he kicks like a mindblowing IPA.

Awarded a Bronze award in the 'Amber / IPA' category at the Dutch Beer Challenge 2017.

Very tasty IPA from Fat Head Brewing. 7.5% ALC and 80 IBU.

The official beer of Peaky Blinders the TV series. Shelby is an India Pale Ale inspired by the style of beer consumed in 1919, at the time of The Peaky Blinders.

Shelby pours a golden amber in colour with a nose of stone fruit and red berries, a gentle maltiness on the palate and a wonderful citrusy lemon bitterness.

Brewed in East Van by Parallel 49 with Sabro hops this hazy IPA imparts strong pineapple and citrus characteristics, and subtle background hints of grassy mint and coconut

I got this for my boyfriend, he likes Rush and "Ghost Rider" is a name of a Rush song. The can is no relation to that, I just got it for the name.

Ghost Rider lyrics

Pack up all those phantoms

Shoulder that invisible load

Keep on riding North and West

Haunting that wilderness road

Like a ghost rider

Carry all those phantoms

Through bitter wind and stormy skies

From the desert to the mountain

From the lowest low to the highest high

Like a ghost rider

Keep on riding North and West

Then circle South and East

Show me beauty but there is no peace

For the ghost rider

Shadows on the road behind

Shadows on the road ahead

Nothing can stop you now

There's a shadow on the road behind

There's a shadow on the road ahead

Nothing can stop you now

Sunrise in the mirror

Lightens that invisible load

Riding on a nameless quest

Haunting that wilderness road

Like a ghost rider

Just an escape artist

Racing against the night

A wandering hermit

Racing toward the light

From the white sands

To the canyon lands

To the redwood stands

To the barren lands

Sunrise on the road behind

Sunset on the road ahead

There's nothing to stop you now

Nothing can stop you now

Hoyne Brewing IPA is the product of years of tinkering in the classroom. They have come back from the drawing board and are ready for a master thesis. Additions of Ariana, Azacca, Idaho 7, Cashmere & Ekuanot make this IPA an A+. at 6.3% Abv. Refreshing hints of mangos, citrus and a full dissertation on alpha acid.

A product of the Union Craft Brewers in Baltimore, MD. ALC 6.5% Red-orange color and slightly fruity but good. Number nine in my gift box and I drank it out of order. Mistook it for 6.

They say that you should photograph things that you care about, so I'm happy to try and document some of the good beer that's available these days. This is Stone IPA which is my current go-to beer.

Lighting stuff: This is another attempt at lighting glass, which I find to be very difficult, due to the reflections. What little I've learned has come from the book "Light Science and Magic - An introduction to Photographic Lighting" which has an entire chapter devoted to this difficult subject. I've just acquired a roll of translum, and I place a sheet of it behind the bottle with a small black card (a little bit bigger than the bottle) between it and the bottle. I then fired a bare Yongnuo through the translum. This created the rim lighting. The lighting on the front of the bottle came from a two Yongnuo strobes in 24 inch softboxes placed on either side of the bottle in an attempt to create even balanced lighting. I still ended up with a fair amount of specular highlights, and spent some time in post cleaning it up. The strobes, in manual mode, were triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N. On the plus side, even if the picture isn't great, I did get to drink the beer.

Other pictures that I've taken of beer can be seen in my cleverly titled Beer album.

Not an East coast IPA, not a West Coast IPA. Streets Ahead takes the key flavour profiles from traditional East and West coast IPAs to create a well balanced Modern IPA. Streets ahead starts with an assertive bitterness that tails off into a soft tropical fruit finish, with key flavours of citrus, melon and peach. These two flavour profiles come together for a delectable finish

The Ghost Ship IPA has an ABV of 6.0% which is on the lower end of most IPA's. That being said it does pack more of a punch than your average beer. I found this beer to be lighter than your standard IPA which makes them go down easier and doesn't fill you up as much as most IPA’s. This paired with the silky consistency mixed with its juicy flavors puts it pretty high on the scale, if you're looking for a beer that can give you a quick and easy day-drunk by the lake.

A golden IPA with a descent head. Some citrus, pine, and hop flavors. Have to give this one a pass for now. It goes terribly with both calzones and burgers. May hold it's own when not paired with food or at least paired with the right food. Stone Brewing Company, San Diego, CA.

Italian postcard by IPA CT Duplex, V. Uff. Rev. St. Terni, no. 9500. Photo: Milano Films. Luigi Duse as the title character in Jacopo Ortis (Giuseppe Sterni, 1918). Caption: Jacopo admires the medallion of Teresa.

Luigi Duse (1857-1930) was parented to the Duse stage actors family to which also famous stage actress Eleonora Duse belonged. Luigi, son of Eugenio and Cecilia Bellotti, was born in Asolo (Treviso) on 16th October 1857. He remained in the family until 1873, the year in which he was engaged with his uncle Enrico for 'supporting parts. A restless character, he soon left this company to join the Pezzana company, he was then in touring groups playing all the roles; in 1884 he returned to primary groups first with Adelaide Tessero and then with Emesto Rossi whom he followed on a long tour of America, Russia and Egypt. In 1896 he was in the Vitaliani company, alongside his wife Vittorina Delfini, Lole Borgi, Emesto Treves and Assunta Frigerio, acting both as performer and administrator. He was then with his cousin, later sister-in-law, Italia Vitaliani and, in 1903, he formed another company with his wife, Tina Sequi, Anna Pedretti and Francesco Artale, presenting a demanding repertoire with Romea and Juliet and Othello by Shakespeare, Romanticismo by G. Rovetta, Come le foglie by G. Giacosa, Casa di bambola by H. Ibsen, and Fedora by V. Sardou.

During the First World War Duse began a cinematographic activity in which he starred in many films, or played supporting parts. He debuted at Bonnard Film in 1915 in the films La morsa della morte, La bara di vetro, and Titanic. He then worked for Latina Ars in 1915 in films like Il mio diario di guerra (Riccardo Tolentino, 1915). In 1916 he co-acted in the Diana Karenne vehicle Lea (dir. Salvatore Aversano and Diana Karenne herself), while he also acted in Bene contro male (1916) opposite Giuseppe Sterni, who soon would also direct him in various films, first in Per un fiore (1916), also La macchia rossa (1916), and later on Jacopo Ortis (1918). Duse would act on-screen opposite famous male stage actors such as Ermete Zacconi (Gli spettri, 1917), but also popular female film actresses such as Linda Pini (La nemica, 1917), Helena Makowska (Caino, 1917), Italia Almirante (Crevalcore (1917), the afore mentioned Diana Karenne (Redenzione, 1919), Claretta Rosaj (La danza sull'abisso, 1920), Fernanda Fassy (Dionisia, 1921), Maria Jacobini (Il richiamo, 1921), and Rina De Liguoro (Saracinesca, 1921). In addition di Sterni, other major directors Duse worked with were e.g. Giovanni Zannini, Guglielmo Zorzi, Romolo Bacchini and Alfredo Robert. In the early 1920s Duse worked for companies such as Medusa Film and Fert. His last film role was in Il castello della malinconia (1922) by Augusto Genina, starring Lucy di San Germano and Angelo Ferrari. After the First World War Duse was director of Lina Casilini's stage company. Luigi Duse died in Rome on 30 July 1930.
