I tried out a program called World Machine which uses mathematical processes to generate landscapes. The program has an interesting interface where the user can switch from viewing the process engines, which generate the 'world,' and dive right in to exploring the terrain. It does not have the sophistication in renering found in Terragen
, but the basic version is probably quite limited compared to the full package.
This is about the most detail that i could render in with this version the full version should offer all the detail one could ever need.
Its advantage over terragen is the ability to explore terrain and the ability to model the process that shapes a landscape.
Terragen and World Machine's proffessional package allow users to import georaphical data files for rendering models of reeal landscapes.
one feature of WM is it's abi;ity to import native terrain files from Terragens format.
I personally prefer programs like terragen which have broad capacities in the input/output department but less in the interface. This has mostly to do with the limitations of my machine. The rendering process of either of these Programs will tax system resources on any computer. Terragen allows users to render to the higest resolution that they can afford whereas WM provides immedeat gratification.
I have yet to try Terragen's new public release which promises to incorporate most of the plugin features and a friendly user environment... for me, the non commercial application is sufficient for rendering and creating synthetic landscapes.

Ironically, a typing command user interface to do set-up stuff and manage the Flavonoid device itself. There were enough unknown variables in the design of the device and enough of my own obsession with preferences and configurations and such all, that I spent some time creating a configurable device. Alas, Nicolas and I are interested in digital devices that are essentially faceless. Just blank, "blind" devices, like Sascha's awesome "Blind Camera" project. They are intriguing because of the way they run counter to intuition and thereby raise questions and immediately make their expression curious and unknown, hopefully opening the possibility for accepting new kinds of interaction rituals besides just pressing little plastic squares and such sorts of interactions that we've come to expect.
I waited five minutes while the guys in front of me tried to figure
out the interface and map it to their surroundings. Finally, I asked the woman at the info booth where I could find a bathroom, since I couldn't wait that much longer.
I would put this under "Broken Interfaces". They need to install another 6 of these in the lobby to help people figure out where they are - or one static, high-resolution map.

Interface I by Ralf Baecker investigates the boundary between two interacting systems rendered into the physical. One system is a compound of motors, twine and elastic bands arranged horizontally. Each motor is connected to its opposing motor in the facing system by a string, and to its neighbors by an elastic thread. In order to excite the system’s behavior, each motor is fed with random impulses from a Geiger-Müller tube.

I have a plan to go through and "inventory" the interfacing I have because nothing is worse than assuming you have the right weight or type and being mid-way through a project and NOT actually having it. Some tend to look alike, so it's hard to tell, even in clear plastic.
