Light Pegs:....one of many child interactive exhibits available at
the Museum of the Great Plains.
Lawton, OK
Another great weekend for the city of Liverpool as it holds this all important event commemorating the 80th year since the Battle of the Atlantic, a battle that was controlled and won at the Western Approaches, beneath the streets of the city. An exhaustive few days covering the event but enjoyable and an honour to be among so many of our heroes past and present. Well done Liverpool, again.
The Schoolhouse Children's Museum & Learning Center is located in a historic school building, the Boynton School (also known as the Boynton Beach Elementary School), at 129 East Ocean Avenue in Boynton Beach, Palm Beach County, Florida.
he school was built in 1913, replacing a one-room school on the same site. Designer was West Palm Beach architect William Maughlin. It has two floors and six classrooms, and housed 12 grades. It was Boynton Beach's only school for 14 years. This was a "whites only" school until the integration of Florida schools in the 1960s.
In 1927 a high school was built next door, and this building became an elementary school. Electricity and indoor plumbing were installed at that time.
In 1990 the Boynton Elementary School closed, though the building continued to be used for community programs. On March 7, 1994, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
In the 1990s the former school was the cornerstone of a revival of downtown Boynton Beach. In 1998-99 the building underwent a $14 million restoration funded by the City of Boynton Beach and the Florida Division of Historical Resources of the Florida Department of State.
A historical marker was erected in 2008.
Since 2001 the former school is the home of the Schoolhouse Children's Museum & Learning Center. "Its mission is to encourage families to learn the history of Boynton Beach and Palm Beach County through interactive exhibitions and programs." It features hands-on, interactive exhibits about history, maritime history, marine life, local and regional history, and period home, general store, and school life displays. "Our exhibits provide an interactive glimpse of life for early Florida Pioneers – before the days of computers, cell phones, televisions or even cars."

Cool interactive ball towers feature many kinetic elements, including lighted pushbuttons, plasma spheres, balls carried on a conveyor to roll down a spiral track, making faces nod, a pinwheel spin, and rolling in a polished bowl. A moving shoe mobile has gears that rotate, and fanciful shoe sculptures, like the "shoe tree" and "shoe horn", that move around a rectangular track. Wall-mounted games complete the exciting shoe shopping experience for children. These elements were installed in 20 retail stores nationwide. Interior designed by Elkus/Manfredi Architects. The video of this retail store environment on YouTube proves that motion does attract people! You may view it here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFZ9SI2GlIA

To celebrate International Museum Day, Greater Manchester Police Museum is launching an interactive roll of honour app.
The app, which will be available at the museum from next week (week commencing Monday 18 May), commemorates every police officer from the Greater Manchester area who has fallen in the line of duty.
The list dates back to 1819 when Special Constable John Ashworth tragically died in the Peterloo Massacre.
The museum has previously been awarded a ‘Hidden Gem’ accolade by VisitEngland for its visitor experience.
Museum Curator Duncan Broady said: “The app is a fantastic resource and gives visitors the chance to remember those officers who lost their lives keeping the streets of Greater Manchester safe.
“The interactivity of the app gives the public the chance to explore the stories of the fallen officers and acknowledge the sacrifice that those men and women made.
“It will join the existing roll of honour along with the other historical treasures we have here at the museum.”
Ian Hanson, Chairman of the GMP Federation added: “`Technology moves on in this new way of remembering those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, what is timeless though is the incredible bravery and sacrifice of fallen colleagues that this helps us remember.
“Behind every name is the story of an individual who cared passionately about our communities and their fellow police officers and for that simple but heroic reason they put themselves in the way of danger.
“It is also important that we remember that also behind each name there are families and friends who have lost a loved one who was taken from them in an instant.
“Although they are immensely proud that pride can never replace that special person in their lives. GMP is a family and families look after each other and for that reason the men and women who make GMP what it is will always stand with them.”
Located on Newton Street in the Northern Quarter area of Manchester city centre, the museum is open every Tuesday 10.30am-3.30pm.
We are also asking for anyone who has any further information or pictures of any officers on the list to please contact police.museum@gmp.police.uk or call 0161 856 3287
.
