This picture is meant to have instructive properties. If you live in a place like Berkeley, and you've had a run of slightly overcast and chilly days, but one day when you're leaving the house in the morning you think to yourself, you know, it's not that cold, I bet it's going to get nice today? And then you leave the house without either a jacket or an umbrella? This is what might happen to you. You might face stormclouds like this as you leave your office, which turn into drenching cold rain shortly after you begin your walk home. You might end up soaking wet, being made fun of by cyclists as they pass by, and so cold that your hands are turning blue and each new raindrop hurts a little bit as it hits your skin.
Should this happen to you, brave adventurer, take heart. You will, in fact, learn from this experience, and actually begin to carry around with you the teeny-tiny travel umbrella that your mother gave you for Christmas.

While waiting to go into the chapel our tour was asked to look at some educational posters of the ceiling paintings.
Many of the 83 county seat cities around Michigan have similar prints to this one of Kent County's capital, Grand Rapids. This aerial view was all the more novel to people of the time since only the hot air balloons during the U.S. Civil War used for observing the enemy lines and behind the lines would have been known. And so to see one's own city or to browse the aerial view of towns never visited in person must have been a visual thrill.
Judging from scale, perhaps the artist (or photographer whose image served the color print artist) was at 400 feet, today's legal limit for most camera drones used recreationally. Making a matching altitude and composition in 2023 for overlaying the images would be instructive: showing where the 1868 streets, bridges and specific buildings persist into the present.

... the number of public buildings that are fast approaching completion, one of the most noticeable is the new Post Office in Baxtergate. The new Post Office, as our readers are aware, occupies a very central and desirable situation in Baxtergate, and stands where the old Post Office did before it was demolished. A better site, indeed, could not have been found. The new edifice is of stone, and has a noble elevation, with superior workmanship, and altogether will have a very handsome and pleasing appearance. It has a frontage to both Baxtergate and the Quay-side, and when completed few provincial towns of the size of Whitby will be better supplied as regards Post Office accommodation than we shall be in our old town. Our older readers cannot fail to be struck with the marvellous contrast between the new Post Office, with its splendid frontage, convenient position, and ample spaces, with the small, contracted, and Lilliputian Post Office in the Old Market Place, which satisfied our forefathers a generation ago. Just about this season of the year, at the close of 1861 and the beginning of 1862, there was a great public clamour and demonstration raised by many of the inhabitants against the removal of the Post Office from the Old Market Place to the present site in Baxtergate. The clamour of that day was over-ruled — happily, as it turned out for the public weal — and the result is most satisfactory for the best interests of the public service, as well as for the comfort and convenience of the Post Office staff and the efficient working of the business. It is instructive to reflect on the great developments and extensions which have taken place in the work of the Post Office during the thirty-five years which have elapsed since the change have alluded to took place.

so, this didn't turn out at all how I expected/wanted it to. This is both cool and instructive on how insidious sun damage can be. I had the picture on the left in a cheap glass clipframe which was marginally too big for it. So I took some black construction paper and cut a square the size of the frame to make a matte for the back.
That was somewhere between 1 and 3 years ago. When we took the photo out to put it a somewhat more girlfriend-friendly frame for our new shared pad we discovered it has created a perfect transfer of the original image. It speaks pretty well of the original print that it seems to have suffered no corresponding sun damage.

Born in Edinburgh in 1789, William Burn was to become one of the most prolific and sought after country house architects of the nineteenth century.
Burn’s output, predominantly domestic, was aesthetically diverse, choosing to lead taste and pioneering the revival of several architectural styles. His country house commissions number in excess of 300 and are located throughout Scotland, England and Ireland.
Through an understanding of how his clients lived and ordered their lives, Burn was able to arrange their living spaces with unparalleled precision, and when combined with a compositional mastery the result was some of the most instructive country houses of the nineteenth century.

Swedish Artist Cecilia Edefalk at Berkeley Art Museum
For the past thirty plus years, Berkeley Art Museum has curated more than 220 MATRIX exhibitions to actively engage with living artists since the program's inception in 1978. In the Museum's new location, Matrix 261 (June 20 - October 16, 2016) showcases an amazing Swedish artist Cecilia Edefalk, whose personal and moving employment, reinterpretation, and reinventing of daily objects of growth and decay, manifested in her sculptures, paintings, drawings and photographs, were touchingly melancholic, achingly beautiful, and strangely comforting.
Some pieces on canvas generated perhaps less buzz, but they were just as valuable and more instructive as they demonstrated the breadth of her works and her methods behind those fascinating sculptures, with the insights "behind the scene" offered in this 2010 piece of tempera and charcoal of birch wood on linen, "Weeping Birch Shadow".
