Submitted to the LEGO Ideas contest "Exhibit Your Creativity In The Lego House!" under the "All Seasons" category under the name "A Spring Awakening": The slumbering earth awoke from its winter's rest, and a symphony of life began to play. The butterflies come out to find a friend. Model has a footprint of 32 x 36 studs and is approximately 52 stacked bricks tall.
This is the second MOC in my mixel-joint-based miniland plus series with heavy emphasis on color and emotion. This is the green one :)
The build started in mid-May with the character when making the other miniland plus characters. I knew I wanted to make something with classical architecture and use the net-weaving technique. I did a quick sketch a few weeks ago and the rest of the MOC flowed from there. A portion of the flowers/plants are recycled sub-assemblies from Order of the Falcon: Monastery by the Eastern Sea.
I reeeeeaally wanted to display this at Brickworld 2023 to show alongside Die In Your Arms and True Contrite, but it sadly just didn't get done in time #YONHO. A prototype version was displayed at Bricks in the Six 2023.

📜 Welcome to the Portico of Octavia! This next slice of Ancient Rome comes in the form of a literal wedge-shaped subsection. Like the Augustan namesake of this monument, these works were overlaid onto the urban fabric of the Eternal City, just as their patrons' versions of history were grafted onto the founding myths of the Roman culture.
No sooner had we discussed an ephemeral form of Augustan propaganda in last week's Design Insights covering the Circus Flaminius, do we now find ourselves confronted with physical architecture attesting to this broader movement toward imperium. It bears repeating just how emblematic the Campus Martius is of this period in Roman history. This legacy is part of what informed my decisions on where to draw suitable boundaries for Phase III.

With the fifth generation T180 Celica, launched in 1989, Toyota stepped up their participation in the FIA WRC (World Rally Championship).

The new car was homologated with a road-car version, powered by a 2.0L 3S-GTE engine producing 165 kW (221 hp) and 304 Nm (224 lb.ft). The GT-Four had a special version of the Liftback body style wearing wider guards to house larger wheels and tires.

For the FIA WRC Group A homologation, the special rally edition of 5000 units named Celica GT-Four RC was launched in Japan in September 1991. The export models are called Carlos Sainz (CS) Limited Edition in Europe (in honour of their famous World Rally Champion) or Group A Rallye in Australia.

Different intercooler (water-to-air as opposed to air-to-air) which Toyota Team Europe wanted so they could more easily tune their WRC car.

Different hood, the emphasis of which is to get rid of heat as fast as possible (instead of scooping in air, as is the case with the standard ST185 hood).

More aggressively tuned ECU.
Different style of front bumper that is much lighter and has more openings than the one on the regular GT-Four with air-to-air intercooler.

Out of the 5000 units, 1800 stayed in Japan, 3000 for the selected European countries, 150 delivered to Australia, 25 went to Singapore, and a few were exported to New Zealand and other markets.

📜 The year was 13 BCE. Lucius Cornelius Balbus, proconsul in Roman Africa, was arriving in quite peculiar fashion to the dedication ceremony for his newly completed theatre in Rome's Campus Martius area. The means of arrival happened to be by boat. Normally, disembarking would occur roughly three-quarters of a kilometer south of the Theatre of Balbus. On that day, however, the Tiber had flooded quite significantly, sending its overflow deep into the former and occasionally recurring floodplain of the Fields of Mars.

📜 "... everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses."
This particularly insightful excerpt of Juvenal's first-century work, Satire X, speaks as much to the modern era as it did to those living in the Roman empire. The concluding phrase "panem et circenses" refers to the artificial appeasement by which the ruling elite ensured the masses would remain pacified. To this point, we've explored many of the "circuses" referred to by this saying in their various forms. Today, for the first time in my ongoing SPQR project, we'll be taking a look at a space dedicated to "panem," specifically the 'grain dole' known as 'cura annonæ'.
