The influence of both Indian and Indo-Caribbean culture can be seen in The Procession, as in much of Locke’s work to date. It is unclear whether the procession participants are wearing masks or if these are their true faces. Several figures and costumes within The Procession reference specific Caribbean Carnival characters from across the region. These include Mother Sally in her voluminous dress, Midnight Robber, wearing a huge, brimmed hat, Pitchy Patchy, dressed in a suit made of tattered, colourful pieces of cloth, and Sailor Mas, inspired by British, French and American naval staff. Each has its histories, and its portrayal differs across the Caribbean.

A procession is part and parcel of the cycle of life; people gather and move together to celebrate, worship, protest, mourn, escape or even to better themselves. This is the heart of Hew Locke’s ambitious new project, The Procession.
The Procession invites visitors to ‘reflect on the cycles of history, and the ebb and flow of cultures, people and finance and power.’ Tate Britain’s founder was art lover and sugar refining magnate Henry Tate. In the installation Locke says he ‘makes links with the historical after-effects of the sugar business, almost drawing out of the walls of the building,’ also revisiting his artistic journey so far, including for example work with statues, share certificates, cardboard, rising sea levels, Carnival and the military.
Throughout, visitors will see figures who travel through space and time. Here, they carry historical and cultural baggage, from evidence of global financial and violent colonial control embellished on their clothes and banners, alongside powerful images of some of the disappearing colonial architecture of Locke’s childhood in Guyana.
The installation takes inspiration from real events and histories but overall, the figures invite us to walk alongside them, into an enlarged vision of an imagined future.
What I try to do in my work is mix ideas of attraction and ideas of discomfort – colourful and attractive, but strangely, scarily surreal at the same time.

always liked the lines that ran through this picture and how the village seems to mimic the landscape around it but completely contrast it at the same time

It's always a treat to dine at The Mongolian Grill in Whitby. It's a unique experience, featuring fresh ingredients with the flavours of your choice.
If you're unfamiliar with their concept, it's a buffet of raw ingredients and seasonings, including meats, seafood, vegetables, and more. Choices include beef, chicken, lamb, shrimps, fish, tofu, fresh vegetables, a wide variety of spices and seasonings, and so much more. Whether you're a meat lover, pescatarian, or vegetarian, there's more than enough to satisfy your carvings. There's also soup and salad, along with rice and tortillas, if you choose. I can never resist.
After choosing your ingredients and seasonings, it will be expertly cooked for you on their huge plancha grill. It's a stir-fry, combining all the ingredients that you chose. This might be the only place where you influence the final outcome of your dish!
On my first round, I chose lamb and beef, with noodles, some veggies, and Asian seasonings. It was really good. For round two, I had more lamb, more veggies, and a spicier seasoning mix. Although I would have loved to have tried some of their seafood choices, I was so full! This was a good meal!
They also offer some great desserts but I was too stuffed to indulge. Check them out in the Whitby Entertainment Centrum!

I stumbled across this beautiful, one of a kind craftsman home perched atop a river bank in the Midwest. It is a stunning representation of style, personalization and commitment to crafting a unique home. Front to back, top to bottom, this home has style and flair that is rarely seen today. Someone took a lot of time to think through and construct each room individually. From ornate mouldings, escutcheons, corbels, and trim work to mosaic tiles in multiple colors and designs, from patterns like herringbone to geometric shapes. There isn’t six square inches of this home that wasn’t individualized in some manner. Even secret staircases to odd attic spaces were thoughtful. Even what most builders would have simply walled over and considered a void was put to use somehow in this home from small shelves to inset cabinets to cubbies – all trimmed out. Even the windowsills were tiled. With 2 kitchens, multiple living areas spanning 3 floors, including an interior garage, this home is also a feat of engineering sitting on this slope to the river below. Due to decades of deterioration, some of the homes bones are showing – steel beams and concrete. I suppose that is why this home is not sitting at the bottom of the river by now. It may be forlorn, and surely has seen better days, but it is holding fast to it’s mooring. A beautiful find while out exploring the urban landscapes.
The small Pepsi logo stands out to me that popular American culture reaches south, even as this man walks with a large stack of what I would assume is flattened boxes. I quickly pulled my camera up for this shot, and the man in the lower left must have been caught a little off guard as he does not look happy to be in my picture. I didn't notice this expression until I got back and looked through my photos.

Scarcely a week passes by when I do not make half a dozen exposures of these trees, I have to share a private roadway with busy traffic - perhaps the risk taken adds an edge to the images, I don't know but I do enjoy photographing them.
