Infinity is the sculpture at the entrance to the National Museum of American History.

The Museum of American History was my favorite Smithsonian museum, and I returned to it many times throughout the 90s. I enjoy history (and even minored in it in college), but my favorite parts of the museum were the technology exhibits--early computers, the ENIGMA machine, etc. (Wow! The Internet is awesome--apparently what I remember most from the museum was the Information Age exhibit.) I even saw HDTV for the first time there, about 14 years before I actually had one in my house. (I remember they showed mostly flowers on it, which I assumed was the future of TV.)

Of course, the centerpiece of a visit to the museum was the massive (and tattered) Star Spangled Banner hanging on the wall opposite the entrance.

On a more recent visit to DC, I heard the museum was undergoing renovations. It opened back up late last year, so I was quite excited about visiting it again.

Unfortunately (against Steph's advice), we chose the day before the Inauguration to go, and the museum was incredibly crowded with long lines for the more popular exhibits (Abe Lincoln's hat and the Star Spangled Banner, now in its own room). Outside of the lines, it was complete chaos, with people bumping into each other and wandering this way and that. It was hard to stop and reflect on anything.

Overall--and I admit it may have been the crowds--I wasn't very happy with the renovation. I remember the museum feeling warm and fun. Now it seems much more cold, with small exhibits that don't really connect to each other. And though I completely understand the desire to preserve the flag by restoring it and placing it in its own exhibit, it felt like the "heart" of the old museum was missing. Of course, it could be just that I had built up the memories of the museum, and the renovation could never have matched them.

The view from the Terrace of Infinity at Villa Cimbrone in Ravello.

The terrace has a number of busts framing the landscape on either side.

The gardens at Villa Cimbrone are one of the highlights of the town of Ravello. They offer splendid views out over the Amalfi Coast while walking between pavilions, statues and rose beds.

The villa was built in the 14th or 15th century, but was massively renovated in the 1900s, by Lord Grimthorpe, the designer of the clock face on Big Ben.

The town of Ravello is slightly inland from Amalfi, in the hills above the Amalfi Coast. It offers amazing views both east and west along the coast from various points, including Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone, where you can wander around the gardens.

The town has a very medieval feel and many places throughout it can only be accessed on foot along narrow winding lanes between old houses and small boutiques.

The drive along the Amalfi Coast, from Sorrento to Amalfi itself is among the best coastal journeys in the world. The road clings to the cliffs of the Sorrentine Peninsula above the Mediterranean Sea and passes through the towns of Positano, Amalfi and Atrani, before heading inland to Ravello.

It’s not a drive for the faint-hearted as the roads are very narrow and winding and it’s not always easy to fit two cars through the gaps in the road. But the views are worth it and there is some stunning scenery.

Infinity Nets Yellow

1960

Oil paint on canvas

National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC

"Infinity Nets Yellow is one of the most significant surviving works from Kusama's early years in New York and was formerly in the collection of American artist Frank Stella. Viewed at close range, its kinetic surface seems to engulf one's field of vision. Creating such expansive areas of pattern required tremendous physical labor and focus from the artist, but she was determined to incite experiences of immersion and boundlessness, an interest that would later be manifested in the Infinity Mirror Rooms."

Infinity, a 385-foot yacht, built in Netherlands by Oceanco, was delivered in 2022. Its owner, Eric Smidt, CEO of Harbor Freight Tools, reportedly paid $300 million for the vessel. Infinity can accommodate up to 16 guests in 8 staterooms, with 43 crew members. The interior was designed by Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design, featuring a teak deck, steel hull and aluminum superstructure. It currently sails under the Cayman Islands flag. It replaces a 291-foot yacht sold in 2022.
