Fodder Production

51 year old Moses Msinanga cannot recall the last time he lost a beast to ill-health or malnutrition. His cattle are healthy and well –fed throughout the year regardless of season. His secret lies in producing fodder as supplementary feed for his cattle. Introduced to him in 2014, by the project, Msinanga is one of the many farmers that have seen a significant change in their livestock productivity, since they received seed and training from the project.

Sugar seems to have developed a reputation as the big bad wolf in relation to health. We have reported on numerous studies associating sugar intake with increased aging, cardiovascular disease, obesity and even cancer. Such research has led to many health experts around the globe calling for reductions in recommended sugar intake, with some saying we should cut out sugar completely. But is it really that bad for our health?

“sugar is a crystalline carbohydrate that makes foods taste sweet”

There are many different types, including glucose, fructose, lactose, maltose and sucrose. Some of these sugars, such as glucose, fructose and lactose, occur naturally in fruits, vegetables and other foods. But many of the foods we consume contain “added” sugars – sugar that we add to a product ourselves to enhance the flavor or sugar that has been added to a product by a manufacturer.

Healty Low Sugar Shake

The most common sources of added sugars include soft drinks, cakes, pies, chocolate, fruit drinks and desserts. Just a single can of cola can contain up to 7 tsps of added sugar, while an average-sized chocolate bar can contain up to 6 tsps.

It is added sugars that have been cited as a contributor to many health problems. In December 2014, MNT reported on a study in the journal Open Heart claiming added sugars may increase the risk of high blood pressure, even more so than sodium. And in February 2014, a study led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) associated high added sugar intake with increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease (CVD).

“Perhaps most strongly, added sugars have been associated with the significant increase in obesity”

In the US, more than a third of adults are obese, while the rate of childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents over the past 30 years.

A 2013 study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggested that consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages increases weight gain in both children and adults, while a review paper from the World Health Organization (WHO) notes an increase in the consumption of such beverages correlates with the increase in obesity.

Are we becoming addicted to sugar?

High Sugar Chocolate Cookies

In support of these associations is Dr. Robert Lustig, a pediatric endocrinologist at the University of California-San Francisco and author of the book Fat Chance: The Hidden Truth About Sugar, who claims sugar is a “toxic” substance that we are becoming addicted to.

A 2008 study by researchers from Princeton University, NJ, found rats used to consuming a high-sugar diet displayed signs of binging, craving and withdrawal when their sugar intake was reduced.

A woman tempted by chocolate

Dr. Lustig: “We need to wean ourselves off. We need to de-sweeten our lives. We need to make sugar a treat, not a diet staple.”We need to wean ourselves off. We need to de-sweeten our lives.”

“We need to make sugar a treat, not a diet staple”

Dr. Lustig told The Guardian in 2013. “The food industry has made it into a diet staple because they know when they do you buy more,” he added. “This is their hook. If some unscrupulous cereal manufacturer went out and laced your breakfast cereal with morphine to get you to buy more, what would you think of that? They do it with sugar instead.”

In her popular blog, Goop, Gwyneth Paltrow cites sugar addiction as one of the reasons she decided to quit sugar completely.

“The bottom line is that sugar works the addiction and reward pathways in the brain in much the same way as many illegal drugs,” she writes. “Sugar is basically a socially acceptable, legal, recreational drug with deadly consequences.”

Bowl of Cereal and Forrest Fruits

Statistics show that we are certainly a nation of added-sugar lovers. According to a report from the CDC, adults in the US consumed around 13% of their total daily calorie intake from added sugars between 2005-2010, while 16% of children’s and adolescents’ total calorie intake came from added sugars between 2005-2008.

These levels are well above those currently recommended by WHO, which state we should consume no more than 10% of total daily calories from “free” sugars – both naturally occurring sugars and those that are added to products by the manufacturer.

In 2013, however, MNT reported on a study by Prof. Wayne Potts and colleagues from the University of Utah, claiming that even consuming added sugars at recommended levels may be harmful to health, after finding that such levels reduced lifespan in mice.

Is eliminating sugar from our diet THE healthy THING TO DO?

Healthy Low Carb Diet

The array of studies reporting the negative implications of added sugar led to WHO making a proposal to revise their added sugar recommendations in 2014. The organization issued a draft guideline stating they would like to halve their recommended daily free sugar intake from 10% to 5%.

“The objective of this guideline is to provide recommendations on the consumption of free sugars to reduce the risk of noncommunicable diseases in adults and children,” WHO explained, “with a particular focus on the prevention and control of weight gain and dental caries.”

In addition, it seems many health experts, nutritionists and even celebrities like Gwyneth have jumped on a “no sugar” bandwagon.

But is it even possible to completely eliminate sugar from a diet? And is it safe? Biochemist Leah Fitzsimmons, of the University of Birmingham in the UK, told The Daily Mail:

“Cutting all sugar from your diet would be very difficult to achieve. Fruits, vegetables, dairy products and dairy replacements, eggs, alcohol and nuts all contain sugar, which would leave you with little other than meat and fats to eat – definitely not very healthy.”

Many people turn to artificial sweeteners as a sugar alternative, but according to studies, these sweeteners may still drive diabetes and obesity.

“Together with other major shifts that occurred in human nutrition, this increase in artificial sweetener consumption coincides with the dramatic increase in the obesity and diabetes epidemics,” the authors note. “Our findings suggest that artificial sweeteners may have directly contributed to enhancing the exact epidemic that they themselves were intended to fight.”

TO VIEW sit back from your monitor 2 feet and place your index finger about 10 inches in front of your eyes and focus on your finger. This will cause your eyes to go comfortably cross eyed. Keep that same cross eyed focus and notice there are now 3 photos in the back ground. Do not let your eyes leave the cross eye as you look at the middle picture which has appeared. Now increase or decrease how much your eyes are cross eyed until the image pops into 3D. Your eyes will want to leave the cross eye, but fight that urge. This is an acquired skill and takes practice. Stop if it's uncomfortable.

Unplanned urbanisation directly increases people’s vulnerability

to disasters. The economic, social and environmental

consequences can be enormous. The ‘multiplier’

effect, where the remaining impact of one disaster is

further exacerbated by another, as illustrated in

Haiti where a massive earthquake in January 2010

was followed by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, further

compounds development losses. The UN mission in

Haiti (MINUSTAH)’s Community Violence Reduction

section has employed 1,345 local residents in a Cash-for-

Work programme on the hilly outskirts of Port-au-

Prince, building rock walls and planting

vegetation as ways to save arable land and avoid

flooding in lower areas.

Gamma comes from the AKK stables. I decided to get dressed for this occasion: Kimono and tattoos from my beloved Bare Rose, designed by June Dion, hair by mcgeeb Gupte, Jolie Femme.

Oh and, I am barefoot I think for the first time in SL - and small wonder that it is the first time with those ugly objects that the metaverse god has decided to put on our extremity.

~Heritage conservation II - Increase in extent and scale of urban conservation: conservation of whole cultural and historic districts (Done By: Peh Chu Ming)

What does this picture show?

The Hong Kong Street - A stretch of shophouses in a modernistic and highly-developed setting

Since independence from the 1960s to the 1970s, urban conservation taking the forms of heritage preservation and conservation was accorded little attention as development was conferred priority as a means to propel Singapore to the glorious heights of economic prosperity and societal stability. It was only until the 1980s when things took a change.

The primary concern in Singapore’s planning agenda – the need to recover heritage and conserve cultural and historic icons – is clearly depicted in this picture. The preservation of historic districts such as the stretch of shophouses shown above is believed to be a means to safeguard ‘the richness of the cityscape’. Such conservation efforts have shown to be on the ascend in terms of its predominance in Singapore’s land use planning as more and more cultural and historic district are conserved and woven into the fabric of Singapore’s highly modernistic Central Business District. From the times of the 1970s to the 1980s and 1990s, conservation efforts grew from the preservation of individual landmarks to a ‘more concerted effort to conserve whole cultural streets’ and also the inclusion of ‘repositories of heritage’. Indeed, such conservation efforts are exemplifications of how the pattern of land use in Singapore has changed as seen in the growing need for the collective conservation and management of heritage sites.

As Singapore becomes more and more developed, making forays into the tertiary industry, indeed, efforts for urban conservation can now be delegated a position of greater importance. In fact, the government seeks to incorporate historical buildings and cultural districts into its various commercial and transport activities. For example, Boat Quay, previously used as a hub for trading establishments, has been revitalized as a riverside dining and entertainment street that still retains many of its architectural and historic features.

However, the big question now is: Does the conservation of the material features of various historic and cultural sites really qualify as heritage conservation? While the architectural facades of such cultural icons are preserved, the activities and lifestyles of users and inhabitants have changed. This raises questions about the ‘authenticity’ of the conservation of heritage.

However, I presume that conservation efforts like this (retaining of architectural features) will nevertheless become the spotlight of Singapore’s urban conservation efforts in the years to come. While the conservation of activities and lifestyles taking place back then are indeed ‘truer’ forms of heritage conservation for it retains the ‘authenticity’ of Singapore’s heritage, it is not economically viable as retrogression is no longer desirable in the light of the 21st century. A balance needs to be strike between urban conservation and economic gains and developments so that progress is not negated. Hence, I presume that the best solution as of now is to incorporate CERTAIN elements of historic and cultural sites (for e.g. the architectures) into the commercial activities taking place now and I believe that such conservation efforts will take on a much much more visible profile in the various calls for urban conservation in the coming years!

HISTORY:

The Leeds and Liverpool canal was built  from 1772 to increase industrial  transportation between West Yorkshire and  the Merseyside ports. Limestone, textiles and coal  were  in critical demand between Yorkshire and Lancashire at this time  where trains  were  still only  beginning to happen.  Committees in Bradford and Liverpool formed  and  for a while disputed over their  different respective plans for the route  Following appeasement, the route as proposed via  engineers John Longbotham and James Brindley was built at a cost of  nearly £260, 000  and a length of 109 miles.    The first phase, from Bingley to Shipley  was up and running  by 1774.  By this time,  Brindley had  passed, and Longbotham  had taken over as chief engineer. The  construction from the Liverpool end  reached Wigan in 1781.

The  canal's overall construction spanned  five decades,  delayed further by money and disputes and also the  colonial  war in the late 1700s.  Trade from Yorkshire to  Liverpool was already brisk  by the time construction  finished, including branches - significantly the ones to Bradford and Wigan.  Although both steam and horse drawn  railways  were  available  by 1800,  the  canal  continued to thrive for a century.

Horse drawn barges  would last impressively until 1960 while industrial  trade  remaining until the  1980s, by which time the bulk of such  work  was being done, quite inevitably by  trains and lorries.

Today, the Leeds and Liverpool canal stretches for 127 miles, crossing the Pennines between the two cities, with additional branches bringing people - and still business - to and from other towns in Yorkshire and Lancashire on its journey. 91 locks are included, notably the notorious 5 Locks at Bingley, which take an apparent 3-4 hours to negotiate.

The towpath is used heavily by both walkers and cyclists on its route, with the Leeds end being notably active especially during commuter hours. At the newly developed Granary Wharf, the canal basin area has been heavily redeveloped in recent years while the new southern entrance to Leeds station also providing additionally quick access to the canal route.

Solar powered borehole and dip tank rehabilitation.

The Dlawa community had not had a dip tank since 1978. They had been surviving through usage of pour-on chemical which is expensive and ineffective as it cannot cover the whole animal-leading to poor livestock health and high livestock mortality. The community is pleased to be one of the beneficiaries of the dip tanks that have been rehabilitated by the project. In addition to the dip tank, the community’s borehole has been solarized helping with provision of water for livestock and household use and even for use by the nearby school. The provision of water has also allowed for a demo vegetable plot which has increased the household’s nutritional diets.

Increasing the radius at the western end has meant resitting this end by at least 9 inches. The point to the two small sidings (Platform 1) has been removed and there will have to be some sleight adjustment at the Eastern end when the weather improves|?

Hemel Hempstead Field Trip - Back to Gadesprings

Had another much anticipated trip back to Gadesprings, and was joined by Roger on a very mild night with increasing cloud cover, the clouds did look threatening and we were expecting rain soon after setting up, but as forecast the rain held off. We were hoping for some Wainscots, and we did get a few, well they were all Common Wainscots apart from one Bulrush Wainscot.

Unfortunately the Garden Darts that I suspected that we had caught, all turned out to be just a variation of Square-spot Rustic, all looking slightly odd with extreme over-lapping of forewings.

Best micro was Ypsolopha alpella a scarce moth in the southern part of Hertfordshire, it is a moth that I recorded on my parents farm for the first time in 2011.

We were surprised with the good count of species for this time of year, 2 good conditioned Heart & Darts was a surprise and being dive-bombed by lots of Old Ladies was fun!

All in all a good trip and well worth the effort of setting up 4 traps.

This is a seismograph station record from the Norris Museum in Yellowstone, Wyoming. The increase in noise near the bottom of the graph (click on the image to zoom in) is a major eruption of Steamboat Geyser. The eruption started at 12:29 PM on 17 November 2019.

Steamboat is the world's tallest geyser. Its eruptions are normally unpredictable - it can go years or even decades without erupting. Steamboat entered an exciting active phase in spring 2018. From fall to the end of 2018, Steamboat continued to erupt about once every 5 to 9 days. 2018 set the record for the most active year ever, with 32 eruptions. 2019 broke that record - this is the 44th eruption of Steamboat Geyser this year. In January 2019, intervals (= eruption start to eruption start) were about 9 to 11.5 days. In February 2019, intervals were about 7 to 9.5 days. March 2019 intervals were about 6 to 8 days. In April 2019, intervals were 14 days and 17 days. Longer intervals between Steamboat eruptions are known to occur during "disturbances" at Norris Geyser Basin (this also happened in summer 2018). In May 2019, after the disturbance ended, intervals were 7 days, 5 days, 5.5 days, 6.8 days, 7 days, and 5 days. In June 2019, intervals were 5 days, 5.5 days, 3 days, 3.4 days, 4.5 days, and 5.5 days. ~Three day intervals are remarkably short for Steamboat Geyser. In July 2019, intervals were 5 days, 6.75 days, 7.5 days, 5.8, and ~6.25 days. In August 2019, intervals were 13.6 days, 7.6 days, and 6.9 days. The two week long interval in August was due to another Norris Basin disturbance. In September 2019, intervals were ~6.7 days, 8.8 days, ~6.1 days, ~7.3 days, and ~6.3 days. In October 2019, intervals were ~6.3 days, 8.3 days, 6.4 days, and 8.1 days. In November 2019, intervals were ~8.5 days and ~9.4 days.

Ecovolis program has proven successful in dramatically increasing bicycle use in Tirana, which, formerly, was a city without a developed bicycle culture. Ecovolis program is the first project in Albania that provides low-income adults with commuter bicycles as well as a donating program for children bicycles. The program recently completed two major steps, opening new bike stations in the city of Durrës and integrating Tourist Information Point Service to the bicycles stations' structure.

History

The Tirana Community Bicycle Albania project won financial support from the George Soros Open Society Foundation Albania (OSFA). An even larger contribution came from the US-based Pedal for Progress organization, which donated 450 bicycles. Sixty of these were used road bikes, which were modified and painted by local technicians to serve as public bikes in the Ecovolis scheme. Another portion was set aside to donate to children and to activists and volunteers at PASS. Still another portion were diverted to the project's Eco Bicycle Shop, a social enterprise which sells bikes for USD 50-150 and reinvests profits for the service and maintenance of Ecovolis bicycles. The main objective of the program was to introduce the community to an inexpensive, environmental friendly form of transport -- the bicycle; to sell used bikes at low prices; to donate bikes to the children of needy families and to PASS volunteers; to establish a bike sharing-scheme in the city (Ecovolis); and to employ financially disadvantaged people and young students to operate the bike-sharing scheme.

System

Each Ecovolis station is staffed by two employees in two shifts and contains 30 -- 60 bicycles. In order to use the bicycles it is required to provide a personal identification document (such as passport or ID card) or by subscribing to the Ecovolis membership Card.

The first black and red bicycles, (also the colors of the Albanian flag) were donated from US-organization Pedal for Progress, (which collect and donate used bicycles). As these bicycles were of different types, converting them for safe and comfortable public use took months of work. The price per bicycle varies from 60 US$ to 90 US$ each. The bicycle is equipped with a front bicycle basket, a behind carrier, a comfortable saddle and a public fender with the Ecovolis sign.

The bicycle stations also provide touristic information to the visitors and a list of the city attractions. Moreover, being a non-profit social enterprise, during particular days the program offers free bicycle service, cycling courses, donations of bicycles and helmets for children in need, bike tours and a bicycle recycle program.

Sulphur Springs Valley, Cochise County, AZ

The number of wintering Sandhill Cranes has increased dramatically since the 1950s, and over 30,000 sandhill cranes may be present in winter. The increase is probably due to the abundant food (primarily corn) available in harvested grain fields.

Recordkeeping for cranes in this area began in 1970 when nearly a thousand cranes were observed in the entire valley. Most census numbers are arrived at by aerial methods.

Sandhill Cranes begin arriving in Sulphur Springs Valley in early October. By the end of December they are at their peak. The birds remain until late February, when they begin their spring migration to northern portions of the U.S., throughout Canada, into Alaska, and across the Bering Strait into Siberia - where they join up with many thousands of other cranes from Russia, China, and elsewhere in Asia.

Cranes that spend the winter in the Sulphur Springs Valley represent two populations, the Rocky Mountains and Mid-Continent.

The Rocky Mountain population is made up of the greater sub-species, Grus canadenis fabida. The nesting range for these birds centers around Grays Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Idaho with other nesting sites in Wyoming, Montana, Utah, and Alberta. Winter range for these birds includes southwestern New Mexico, mainly the area surrounding Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, the Sulphur Springs Valley and northern Mexico.

The Mid-Continent population includes three subspecies of Sandhill; the lesser, G.c. Canadensis; the Canadian, G.c. Rowani; and the greater, G.c. Tabida. The nesting range of this population includes central and northern Canada, Alaska, and northeastern Siberia. This population winters in Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, southeastern Arizona and northern Mexico.

Cranes typically migrate in a few long, high altitude flights, stopping at traditional stopover sites. Major stopovers for the Mid-Continent population include the Platte River in Nebraska and the San Luis Valley in Colorado for the Rocky Mountain population.

Interview with Ing. Michel van Rijn (President RijnPlant Breeding BV and board member RijnPlant BV)

Which nations are the main selling markets of RijnPlant in recent years? Facing the economy crisis, how is the current state of each of them?

RijnPlant Breeding and RijnPlant Sales have different markets to supply to, As a Anthurium, Bougainvillea and Calathea young plant producer, RijnPlant Breeding sells its products to over 50 countries worldwide. After Holland as our largest market, PR China, Brazil and USA are major markets . Daughter-company RijnPlant Sales is responsible for the sales of 65% of the European Anthurium pot plant production. Target markets are not only limited to western European countries, also Poland and Russia are become more and more important markets.

Over the last years we see a large increase in our young plant sales in all export countries. We are proud on this result, which is achieved with years of hard work. Important factors to achieve this result are having transparent and direct communication with all our customers. Even when we need to work with agents because of the amount of sales in a certain country, we keep the direct communication. This makes it easy for customers to get the lastest information regarding cultivation and availability of new varieties directly from our De Lier based head office. Another key point is our strategy by offering specific varieties on a area-exclusive base. This system, which we already use for years in Europe, works also very well in Asia and USA We want our customers in a country to cooperate together instead of competing, we have seen that this works well by giving customers exclusive rights on a certain variety. Our customers who have exclusive rights on different varieties do not need to compete on price. Instead, they start to communicate with each other on the cultivation skill and market trend.

When looking to the sales of finished plants RijnPlant is also giving extra services to their customers. With our cooperate brand ‘RijnPlant Group’, we use the combined power of 13 major pot Anthurium companies in The Netherland to supply a whole range of Anthurium plants, from 9-cm pots till 27-cm pots to the European retail market. To put it in a figure: RijnPlant Group is responsible for 65% of the European Anthurium pot plant production. Their production is +- 15 million pots annually and making an turnover of around 50 million Euros. With working with such a cooperate brand our growers and our own production facilities, can handle larger orders, for example make by chains of garden centres and IKEA. Several times per year our sales staff have meetings with the purchasing department of the big retail companies to discuss the choices for the coming period and to make a good strategy for the long-term. Together with retail we can discuss with flower type or flower colour will be more popular in the coming years ór with flower types we will make popular by taking control of the market in a certain way. Since RijnPlant is participating in many links of the supply chain, we feel the pressure on the market at this moment. This situation is not positive for the whole economy and for horticulture , but it is proven in the past that when you invest during the tough times, you will be stronger after it. That is the way we will fight this ‘crisis’. Now is the time to improve production and introduce new varieties. On short -term everyone wants to get stronger sales by making extra promotion. We see it as important to make both promotion to our direct customers, the retail, by giving suggestions about added value we can give our plants. Examples are the use of coloured cover pots , ceramic pots, special sleeves etc. Next to that it is also important to influence the ‘customer of your customer’, the end-consumer. RijnPlant is one of the first companies who make promotion on television in The Netherlands. Every week our products are shown in the major Dutch gardening program. Promotion on television and easy to recognize retail concepts in garden centres makes it easy for the consumer to find our products. Our sleeves around the plants and the distinctive labels attached to the pots, make clear to every consumer that it is a top quality product!

RijnPlant is a young plant supplier and also an end-product producer, does it cause the competition between RijnPlant and your own customers?

RijnPlant is started as a grower of Anthuriums many years ago. Already quickly we get involved in breeding, since the available varieties couldn’t meet our high standard. During the years we are grown to a company that is very active in the sales of young plants. At this moment RijnPlant produces +- 20% of the total European Anthurium pot plant production itself (and RijnPlant Group produces about 65%)! To avoid that we become a competitor of our customers, but also to avoid our customers compete we each other we have adopted the exclusivity system. From the point of view of RijnPlant Breeding we see all customers as equal. This means that we deal with our two production facilities the same as with our customers. They get the same young plants and they both have to negotiate with the sales manager from the sales department about new varieties, and contract details etc. All the 13 companies grow different varieties in different pot sizes, with this system they can be of an added value for each other and for the RijnPlant Group. What seems to be competitive strategy works out as a cooperate strategy!

What is RijnPlant's opinion about more and more Dutch floricultural firms invest, cooperate, and produce locally in China? Do you have the same plan for the future? Why (reasons of the decision)?

Over the past years we have seen that larger horticultural firms have experienced large expansion outside Europe. On one side these firms moved their production to Asia to produce for the European market, this especially happens with flower bulb business and seed producing industry and tissue culture labs . On the other side also sales for these companies are increased in Asia, what also have great influence on the choice of production area. For RijnPlant the last thing caused the decision to start up an own company in Shanghai, PR China. Over the last 10 years our sales in China are growing by the year and in order to offer our customers the best plant quality and the best cultivation support with a sharp price our move to Shanghai is very logical. People from outside think that only cheap labor is the driving force why daughter companies are founded in China, but it isn’t. For such a high quality product like Anthurium with a cultivation time, based on starting material, of at least 8 months, you want to give your customers good plant material and good support. In the actual case when using air freight, plants are on their way for some days in ‘less controlled’ . Next to this, our own facility will also be used as a showroom for our excising and our new varieties. Coming April, just after Horti Expo 2009 our production will start and three months later, the first Anthuriums will be send to our customers which our spread over whole China. In our opinion the move of European companies to Asia and to China in special is positive. It is a great step to present ‘Dutch quality’ products for a affordable price to markets for which our plants were (too) expensive. It is a win-win situation: better quality for grower, better price for grower, more varieties on market for end -consumers, good presentation for Dutch horticultural sector.

Can you introduce more details about the RijnPlant China to our readers? For example,

I. Will you produce pot plant end-products at Shanghai?

II. Will it involve the breeding section in Shanghai?

III. How about the technical conduct on production? Will you send staff member from Holland to Shanghai? or train local Chinese staff member by serial training program?

Already for several years RijnPlant has intensive contacts with parties to realize a company in China. Our Shanghai-based company will solely focus on the production of young plants by growing tissue-cultured plants to a larger size. It is true that we combine in Holland the supplies of young plants and in-house production of finished plants, but as said in China we will only produce for our customers. In the past, when we imported our plants into China, it was too expensive to ship larger young plants to our customers. Now we start in Shanghai, we offer the extra service of supplying young plants of bigger sizes. Next to 10-12cm high plants in 2,5cm plugs, we also offer 20-25cm high plants in larger plugs to the grower.

The breeding skills; our mother plants, the way we make crossings and the way we select novelties, are top secret. Breeding new varieties is a process that takes many years and costs a lot of efforts. We will not start breeding at our Shanghai facility, but in fact we will do intensive testing in Shanghai to ensure we offer the best novelties to our customers in Asia. It will also make it easier for growers to see which varieties RijnPlant can offer to the Chinese market.

Not only good material is important to make the best end product, also you need good people to give the plants a good treatment. For our Chinese company we have chosen to send the general manager from Holland and to select some key persons from China. The Chinese employees who will have higher functions have received higher education in Holland in order to ensure their skills and knowledge.

How much percentage of the production cost can be reduced when the facility start to produce Anthurium young plants in China? What are the main factors of reducing cost? Will the reduction also be shown on the price of young plants?

Quality is the issue that counts most. All arguments to start a company in China are given by the fact that we want to give the Chinese/Asian growers the best plant quality possible. Because of production in China we can give the young plants the same conditions like we use in Holland for growing up, but we eliminate the step of international transportation. We have learned that this transport, although executed carefully, can harm the plants especially plants of larger size. Quality has first priority, but this is also a chance to save costs for our customers. Since we have domestic production, the costs for international freight costs and import costs are eliminated which can save the grower more than 10% on his total plant costs.

What are the most popular varieties in Asia and China in recent years, and how about the amount of each variety? Can you give a brief introduction about RijnPlant's partnership in China?

Compared with Europe, Asia is a different market. A different market asks for a special strategy and distinctive varieties. Since we started in 1999 to export our products to China, we were not totally aware of this. The climate in China is not the same through the whole country, so some varies did perform very well in Guangzhou are where at a Beijing-based customer this varieties was not performing 100%. Anno 2008, we offer special for the Chinese market a range of extra strong varieties. All these varieties are trialed first at our research facility in Holland. In the next step these varieties are commercially grown at one or more production facilities in Holland to see the real characteristics of the varieties. When we are quite sure about the good performance of a variety in Holland , we will send it as a trial to Asian growers. As you can see, we take quite a time to really challenge new varieties before we send them to our customers. Like in Europe, we offer our varieties on a exclusive base in asia. All our top varieties are supplied to max. two companies in China. With this strategy we make the grower a monopolist, so make promotion nationwide himself and attract the retail to buy from him..

Though the PBR has started running in China, the illegal propagation still can be found in China. Will it affect the operation of regional exclusive right? And how is the effect of regional exclusive right strategy in China so far (reactions from the market)?

To be honest: our system of regional exclusive rights make it easier to fight illegal propagation. The last years we have tried together with other breeders to convince key parties in China that PBR is necessary in order to increase investment in China. Like for all patent-related issues, a company is working for many years on a certain project, is investing tens of thousands Euro’s in order to actually get a distinctive and unique new product. When we cannot earn back this investment, we can also not continue to introduce new varieties to the market. Our customers in China are very keen to get exclusive rights in special varieties in their portfolio. It gives them the chance to be unique in the market. The first contracts about the exclusivity agreements ended last year and all growers have asked to give us a new contract for 2-3 years. As we see now this systems works very well!

Many people think that there is a gap between end consumers and producers/breeders in Chinese floricultural field. The end-consumers do not have enough knowledge on caring the pot plant they bought. Also, it still lacks the atmosphere of “consuming floriculture products and using them in daily life” in the Chinese market. Thus, many Chinese horticulture enterprises wish to have a governmental institute which specially works on introducing and promoting floricultural consumptions. Is there any similar institute in Holland? Or what is RijnPlant’s opinion/experience on this issue?

In Holland we have the ‘Bloemembureau Holland’ (Flower Council Holland) who makes promotion for the Dutch horticultural industry worldwide. On the other side we also see that major horticultural companies are actively involved in promotion campaigns for their products. It is good to have a central institute which has a coordinating function to make promotion to the florists, retail and customers. Next to that I think that it would be interesting to copy the European phenomenon to organize ‘consumer exhibitions’ in China. Flower should be seen as part of the daily life. People are many times thinking how to design their interior with nice furniture and wall papers etc., but flower should also been seen as a part of the house interior! As RijnPlant we see this not as our primary task, but we are very willing to help our customers by making promotion campaigns and giving consultancy to them.

What is RijnPlant's opinion about the future trend of floricultural consumption in China? Is the China market attracted to RijnPlant?

Over the years RijnPlant is active on Chinese market, we see an increasing demand from consumers to specific RijnPlant varieties. What happens with cars and with clothing, also happens with Anthuriums now! When people buying a car, they never ask for ‘a red car ’, but they ask for a BMW or a Mercedes. In the market we experience the increasing demand for ‘Red King’, ‘Red Victory’, ‘Fantasy Love’ etc. just to name a few of the more than 200 RijnPlant varieties. For RijnPlant it is also important that our products have such strong names, and with specific promotion we also want to further build on these names. We need to make it easy for consumers; when they need a strong Anthurium, they ask for one of the varieties named above. The regular trend China regarding Anthurium focus on large flowering red varieties. Therefore RijnPlant has bred those kind of varieties that does well in Chinese climate and are loved by the consumers. Like in Holland we also see in China a new trend, and we hope this trend is a ongoing trend for the future to also try other colors. In Holland consumers started to buy ‘different’ colors already 10 years ago, but now we also see the change in China. ‘New’ colors for Chinese market are pink (Adios Kiss, Pink Love), white (White King, Pr. Alexia White) and orange (Orange King, Amazing Queen). Because of the conservative market it is still a big task to make growers understand these news trends so they can anticipate on it. Sometimes growers have to take a small risk by trialing new varieties and new colors, but they shouldn’t forget that.

How much does RijnPlant know about China market? Do you have some investigation about China market? If so, what is the conclusion?

For RijnPlant getting to know new markets is very important. Many horticultural companies have a R&D department for plant research, but personally I think they also do more R&D on the markets they supply to. RijnPlant started some years ago with doing very in-depth researches on markets we supply our young plants and/or flowering plants to. And already the first results made us so very excited, to get unique and very important information, that we continued that. One of our latest market research was a market analysis made of the market in China. With this research we cooperated with London Business University and HAS Den Bosch. Because Anthuriums are produced in the greenhouse, you should avoid to do all research from your desk. Like with sales and after-sales, direct communication with growers is important. Together with our staff and our agents in China, we have done many interviews among the majority of the Chinese Anthurium growers.

According to this market research, red color varieties dominate the current market as mentioned above. Most growers anticipate the selling price of Anthurium pot plants will decrease (57 %) or keep stably (36%) and the demand will increase (71%) or keep stably (29%) in five years. The trend of Anthurium pot plant size is mainly medium-size (14-22 cm) (41%). However, it is a notable result that the demand of small-size (9- 14 cm) Anthurium pot plant will be increased expectedly (37%).

On the other hand, we also have a deeper understanding about the Chinese Anthurium growers’ worry: they are very concerned about the selling prices of their Anthurium product, which is estimated decreasing in the future. Growing the same varieties with competitors and a lower quality of their own products are also major difficulties growers are facing.

Can you give a brief introduction of the development and history of RijnPlant? What is the characteristic of RijnPlant?

The initial foundation of RijnPlant was in the year 1944 when Mr. Leo van Rijn sr. started to grow vegetables under co-called cold frames. In 1968 two of the sons of Leo sr. grew total of 30.000 m2 of vegetables nearby the city of Delft. In 1975, when Leo jr. joined the company they started to grow a first 4.500 m2 of pot plants. During the following years the company has showed a fast growth to reach the current 30 ha. full with pot plants. One of the characteristics of RijnPlant being a family-owned business is the close distance between management and work floor. All of the six board members (three from the second generation and three from the third generation) have worked in all RijnPlant departments before getting management positions. They know what is going on at the work floor and keep personal touch with employees and their work.

There are plenty native plant species in China. An important issue for Chinese is developing the nature resource by breeding programs. Can you share the experience of breeding Anthurium? (how did you start it? What are the breeding goals?) Did RijnPlant consider that developing other Chinese native species of plants? Or is there any plan about cooperating with local research institutes?

RijnPlant sees and understand the value of native plant species in China. China, with its various climate regions is a centre of origin for a lot of plant families. As a breeding it is important not to forget you are working with living material. The centre of origin of Anthurium can be founded in the Latin American Andes region. We can find there a large source of germplasm, which have potential interesting characteristics that can be bred into commercial varieties. Over the last 20 years we have mastered the skills of being an Anthurium breeder very well and we have a large collection of botanical Anthurium species. Breeding takes a lot of time and efforts, at this moment we are working on new varieties that can come on the market with large quantities in +- 8 years. That 8-10 years to introduce novelties is the necessary time span for Anthurium breeding. Growers can recognize RijnPlant varieties because of their strong flower colors, quick growth, the production of many flowers and the ability to perform well in different climates.

As far as he knows, RijnPlant focuses on Anthurium and Bougainvillea. Is there any plan to start with other items in the future?

Like all companies we are always looking what other crops are interesting to do business in. In the past we had a large farm in Brazil to grow Dracaena propagation material which we exported to Holland where we sold it to the market. Over last 20 years we have become the world-wide expert in the field of Anthurium breeding and young plant production. Our cultivation process is highly automated to do the planting, replanting and sorting. From the beginning on we are committed to help our customers as good as possible and we define this good help as two factors: 1) good plant quality and 2) good services. Other crops we focus on now are Bougainvillea and Calathea . The first one is mainly sold to Europe, USA and Japan. Calathea is a crop with a very high potential for RijnPlant, our sales in Europe were very strong the last year. That strong, that we couldn’t supply our novelties to export markets. In the comings years we will be able to introduce new, own bred and patented varieties, to the Asian market. For all our business we see that it was a hard job to become the best in the market, but to stay the best in the market is even more difficult. Therefore we have chosen to keep our main focus on Anthuriums and Calathea , but who knows we will surprise the Chinese market in one of the coming years for new crops.

The Mig-17 is a significantly enhanced version of the MiG-15. Changes include an increase in wing sweep and other aerodynamic changes, as well as a more powerful engine in the MiG-17F, the first Soviet engine to use an afterburner. The MiG-17P was the first true all weather radar equipped interceptor available to the Soviet Union. The “PF” version also incorporated the afterburning engine found in the “F” model. The Polish built aircraft carried the designation Lim-5P. Beginning in 1971, all these aircraft were rebuilt as ground attack aircraft and redesignated Lim-6M or as camera equipped Lim-6MR reconnaissance aircraft.

Service History

This aircraft was one of the last batch of Lim-5P aircraft built and was delivered in 1959 or 1960. It served with the 29th Fighter Regiment until at least October 1964. Between June and November 1972 it was rebuilt as a Lim-6M and assigned to the 40th Fighter Ground-Attack Regiment. By April 1982 it had again been modified to incorporate reconnaissance cameras and designated as a Lim-6MR and assigned back to the renamed 40th Fighter-Bomber Regiment. It was withdrawn from service in July 1987.

The aircraft was acquired by the U.S. Air Force in 1988 and flown by civilian contractors for research projects conducted by the Defense Test and Evaluation Support Agency at Kirtland AFB, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Apparently retired to storage at Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona around 1990.

A month ago: 5 eurocents.

Now 10 eurocents.

WHY?

Albert Heijn changed their Euroshopper stuff into Basic. Same low prizes, in the beginning!

Now they increased the price of such a tin Tomato Puree with 1 eurocent, from 7 to 8 eurocents.

IS THAT AN INCREASE of 100%?

YES, but only for customers in Holland who only buy one can and nothing else, and pay with real money.

A month ago they paid 5 eurocents for such a can, and now 10 eurocents!

Do you still follow me?

In Holland we do not use 1 or 2 eurocent coins. 3 or 4 or 6 or 7 means 5; 8 or 9 or 11 or 12 means 10.

;-) It's funny, but not really a joke ;-0

Don't take it too seriously...

The 2nd annual Meath Spring Half Marathon (sponsored by Generali PanEurope) was organised and held at Bohermeen AC, Ardbraccan, Navan, Co. Meath, Ireland on Sunday March 3rd 2013 at 12:00. A 5KM race was also held on the day. This year a very large crowd of over 1,000 athletes turned out to compete on the day. The race has already increased in numbers since last year. Overall, this was a fantastic event and brilliantly organised by one of Ireland's oldest and most famous athletic clubs. The race is very well positioned in the running calendar for those who are preparing for a Spring Marathon.

The weather was perfect for 5KM and Half Marathon running with many personal bests and goals achieved for many people in both races.

This is a selection of photographs of the 1st lap pass of the finish and then the finish of half marathon. There are some 5KM photographs. Unfortunately we only had one camera on course today.

How can I get a full resolution copy of these photographs?

All of the photographs here on this Flickr set have a visible watermark embedded in them. All of the photographs posted here on this Flickr set are available, free, at no cost, at full resolution WITHOUT watermark. We take these photographs as a hobby and as a contribution to the running community in Ireland. We do not know of any other photographers who operate such a policy. Our only "cost" is our request that if you are using these images: (1) on social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter,LinkedIn, Google+, Google Orkut etc or (2) other websites, web multimedia, commercial/promotional material that you provide a link back to our Flickr page to attribute us. This also means the use of these images for Facebook profile pictures. In these cases please make a wall post with a link to our Flickr page. If you do not know how this should be done for Facebook or other media please email us and we will be happy to help suggest how to link to us.

Please email petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com with the links to the photographs you would like to obtain a full resolution copy of. We also ask race organisers, media, etc to ask for permission before use of our images for flyers, posters, etc. We reserve the right to refuse a request.

In summary please remember - all we ask is for you to link back to our Flickr set or Flickr pages. We are not posting photographs to Flickr for commercial reasons. If you really like what we do please spread the link around, send us an email, leave a comment beside the photographs, send us a Flickr email, etc.

I ran the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set!

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information below.

If you want to contribute something for these images?

Silver City Historic District (Boundary Increase & Amendment)

Silver City, New Mexico

Listed 09/25/2013

Reference Number: 13000767

The town of Silver City includes four main historic districts. The Silver City Historic District (SCHD), representing the core commercial downtown, the earliest and finest residences of prominent settlers, and important public buildings such as the Grant County Courthouse, which was the town's first National Register district listing in 1978 (#375377). The Chihuahua Hill Historic District is located to the south; North Addition to the north; and, Black's Addition to the west-ali adjoining the SCHD. The Big Ditch or San Vicente Arroyo is the site of the original Main Street, which was destroyed by a catastrophic flood in 1895. Today, the Ditch creates a ribbon of green space with sizable trees and parkland that is an amenity to the town, and serves as the eastern boundary of the SCHD. This amendment and small boundary increase includes an extension of the period of significance, which originally ended in 1930, to 1960. The south end of Bullard Street, which includes the Bullard Hotel, the Texas-Louisiana Power Plant, the Silver Liquor Company Warehouse, the Ice Storage Building, and the Home Furniture Building was excluded from the early district listing. However, these resources, which fall within the new period of significance, warrant inclusion based on their location, historic integrity, and strong associations with the railroad boom of Silver City. This last block on the east side of South Bullard is being nominated as a boundary increase to the Silver City Historic District for local significance under Criterion A for Community Planning/Development and Criterion C for Architecture as intact examples of a railroad-era hotel, power plant supplying electricity to the town and nearby communities, and warehouses used for storage of important commodities. These resources reflect Silver City's early twentieth-century growth and reveal the influence that the railroad had on commercial development. The new period of significance also allows the inclusion of many important landmark buildings that date from between 1930 and 1960 and were considered neutral in the original nomination. These historic resources are interwoven with the late nineteenth and early twentieth century building fabric, and reflect the growth experienced in Silver City between the Depression and the years following World War II. The added resources represent evolving taste in design and style, new building technologies such as the abundant use of steel casement windows and even curtain walls, and Silver City's move toward modernization. These resources, too, are eligible for inclusion under Criteria A and C.

Increasing access for women and girls to physical education and soccer helps them build confidence and a stronger social integration. Involving girls in soccer alongside with boys can help overcome prejudice that often contribute to social vulnerability of women and girls in a given society.

The Advancing Youth Project will provide increased access to quality alternative basic education services, social and leadership development and livelihoods for out of school youth aged 13-35 who have no or marginal literacy and numeracy skills. The Project will work closely with the Ministry of Education and community-based organizations to build their capacity to manage a system and programs that provide youth with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed.

Key activities include developing three levels of curriculum in literacy, numeracy, life skills and work readiness; training facilitators to deliver alternative basic education; providing youth with work-based learning opportunities, and links to skills and entrepreneurship training; forming youth clubs and local alliances to support youth education and enhanced livelihoods; and developing private-public partnerships. Our focus is on testing alternative models, conducting rigorous evaluation and providing designs for sustainable national service delivery.
