Day 5 - Hue

The vivid colours of many incense sticks

At a Balinese shrine at the base of a tree in Kuta. A black and white chequered "kain poleng" cloth that is symbolic of Bali can be seen behind the statue while some of those "canang sari" offerings are placed in front of him. Not too sure if it was inappropriate for me to take this pic but I think that I did ask for permission.

Black Baize background and diffused LED lighting and a couple of incense sticks to create the smoke.

Incense sticks in all sizes, with and without decoration have been seen very often in Penang (1983).

The photo was taken in 1983 with my analog Nikon FE camera and 35mm slide film, and now scanned with Nikon Coolscan 4000D film scanner.

This photo is the property of Helga Bruchmann. Please do not use my photos for sharing, printing or for any other purpose without my written permission. Thank you!

A small gold tea light candle holder laying on its side with the base facing away from the camera..

It has 11 sides making it a Hendecagon.

Inside are 4 short incense sticks burning making plenty of smoke. It is in a dark room and lit from the side with an L.E.D torch. The side of the tea light holder, on the top part, appear to have 'bubble' like texture on the surface. This is an illusion, looking through the holes on this side at the holes on the other side give this appearance.

Patchouli is a species of flowering plant in the family Lamiaceae, commonly called the mint or deadnettle family. The plant grows as a bushy perennial herb, with erect stems reaching up to 75 centimetres in height and bearing small, pale pink-white flowers.

Patchouli is famous for its strong aroma, which makes it ideal for bath and hair care products. Patchouli incense sticks originate from patchouli essential oils, which explains their anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, antidepressant, and antiseptic properties. These sticks have been known to bring aphrodisiac effects when burned, thereby ideal for people with low sex drive and other sexuality complications.

This krathong was made and given to us by my niece-in-law for the Loi Krathong holiday.

Wikipedia: A krathong is traditionally a small floating container fashioned of leaves which is made to hold a small portion of goods like a traditional Thai dish (such as hor mok) or dessert. The traditional krathong used for floating at the festival are made from a slice of a banana tree trunk or a spider lily plant. Modern krathongs are more often made of bread or Styrofoam. A bread krathong will disintegrate after a few days and can be eaten by fish. Banana stalk krathongs are also biodegradable, but Styrofoam krathongs are increasingly banned, as they pollute rivers and oceans. A krathong is decorated with elaborately-folded banana leaves, three incense sticks, and a candle. A small coin is sometimes included as an offering to the river spirits. On the night of the full moon, Thais launch their krathong on a river, canal, or a pond, making a wish as they do so. The floats are thought to have been introduced to Chiang Mai in 1947 and have since been incorporated into Thai culture. Government offices, corporations, and other organizations launch large decorated krathongs. There are competitions for the best of these large krathongs. Beauty contests often accompany the festivities and fireworks also have become common.

The other main sight of interest at Lumbini is Ashoka's Pillar, near the temple. It is protected by a small fence, which is decorated with prayer flags and banners from the faithful. Around the courtyard containing the pillar are bowls for incense sticks, and there is room to sit in front of the pillar for contemplation.

Have to bore you with more pics of these Balinese offerings as I took a whole series of them. Taken outside the Petitenget temple in Seminyak.

I didn't have incense sticks/cones or mosquito spirals or anything more appropriate, so I had to make do with candles. They were in my cupboard for a very long time, and they are very pretty ones --- below in a comment I posted a zoomed-out view of them from the time I bought them (a long time ago). And I was too lazy to use a flash, hence the light from the second candle.

[Enlarge and look around.]

The Chinese community in the north-east of Tasmania during the 1880s were largely followers of Shen, or the Taoist religion, and their elaborately decorated temples were lovingly cared for. Europeans referred to them as "Joss Houses". This name possibly derives from an Anglicised form of "deus", a Portuguese word for God (originally derived from Latin). This would most likely have come from the Portuguese colony of Macau. "Joss-sticks" referred to the incense sticks that were prominent in temple worship.

The Guan Di Temple, or Guan Di Miào, refers to a place where the Tao is observed and cultivated. "Tao" means the Way of virtuous conduct which leads to enlightenment and prosperity. Taoists have absolute reverence for life because all life is sacred. Living in harmony with nature is essential for the Tao. And since Taoism believes in the eternal spirit it involves not just the current generation of people, but in fact all the ancestors as well. This is why respect and prayers for one's ancestors is so vital in the practice of this religion. Taoism, like all the perennial religions, is essentially Traditionalist in its outlook.

Taoism has been connected to the philosopher Lao Tzu, who around 500 BCE wrote the main sacred text of Taoism, the Tao Te Ching.

In Vietnamese temples, burning incense is a sacred act symbolizing devotion, purification, and spiritual connection. The rising smoke carries prayers to deities and ancestors, ensuring respect and guidance. It purifies the space, invites blessings, and fosters meditation. Different numbers of incense sticks hold distinct meanings, aligning with Buddhist, Taoist, and folk traditions. This ritual bridges the physical and spiritual realms, honoring the past while seeking harmony.

FOXCITY. Decor - Sunset Lamp (Shadows EDT)

For Macro Mondays. I've whittled my smoke photos down to 10 and really find it difficult to know which one to post.

This is a dead red rose, two incense sticks and one white sage cone, and the light from my phone, against a black cardboard box on my table. No tweaks apart from cropping and adding more shadow.

I haven't taken photos since 2019 but have been trying different ideas in photoshop to layer and arrange the shots over the last couple years. A friend from work (named Raber) sent me a box filled with hundreds of packages of incense sticks because he liked some of the results and they have been sitting on a shelf for about a year.

A few weeks ago I purchased an new camera and with a few days off from work this was one of the results.

If you look towards the middle or outer parts long enough you may see some animal heads.

I do my photoshop with the smoke shots at night when I've lost my battle with insomnia. As reassurance I don't work with sharp objects or heavy machinery.

Made from single photo of a smoke plume, layered and mirrored in photoshop. Vibrance and saturation boosted. Original project reduced significantly and in stages. Most time consuming part of the process was reducing the size for uploading. Original size was 182.793 inches by 182.793 inches at ppi for printing. Project was 90 layers and project size was 120 gigs. This is a low res copy at 166.7 MB.

bundles of incense sticks in hue, vietnam

A natural progression with my smoke shots. Sort or a rushed Idea, A bottle with green air freshener balls lit from underneath and smoke lit from the sides.

I will make another attempt when I have time and space to set it up properly. The quality of the smoke seems to be less defined that in other images I made that were focused solely on the smoke. A compromise in lighting the bottle. Time to invest in lighting modifiers, tape, rubber bands and LaCroix boxes are beginning to slow me down, especially when it all comes apart, which is anytime I move something. It's all such a delicate balance.

A close up shot with a 200-500mm lens. Lots of airborne particles had to be removed in camera raw because of the distance between the camera and the subject.

Loi Krathong takes place on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar. In the western calendar this usually falls in November.

"Loi" means "to float" and a "krathong" is traditionally made from a section of banana tree trunk. Modern krathongs are more often made of bread or styrofoam. A bread krathong will disintegrate in a few a days and be eaten by fish and other animals. The traditional banana stalk krathongs are also biodegradable, but styrofoam krathongs are frowned on, since they are polluting and may take years to disappear. Regardless of the composition, a krathong will be decorated with elaborately-folded banana leaves, flowers, candles and incense sticks. A low value coin is sometimes included as an offering to the river spirits.

During the night of the full moon, Thais will float their krathong on a river, canal or a pond lake. The festival is believed to originate in an ancient practice of paying respect to the spirit of the waters. Today it is simply a time to have fun.

Incense sticks come in a rainbow of colors!

An incense factory worker in Hanoi. The offsetting colors of the incense bundles are really eye catching.

Most days i light some incense sticks and talk to my departed wife for a minute. I got into the habit of saving the incense stalks in this jar. I have tried to straighten them all into alignment, but no go :P . Another lesson to go with the flow <3

It’s a lazy coastal afternoon at the Island Breeze. The air is a delightful mix of seasalt, incense, and scented candles, mingling with the aroma of hot cocoa. Scattered around the room are little mementos from past trips, creating a wanderlust vibe.

The resident kitties lounge on plush furniture, begging for some playtime with you. In the background, dinner preparations are just beginning. It’s the perfect time to unwind, play games, and share tales of past adventures with your feline friends. 🐾

In this town in Vietnam, tons of bamboo are turned into incense sticks. Bamboo is slivered down into the thin and short sticks we're familiar with, then soaked in dye and, once dried, dipped in the material which is burned for the pleasant smelling smoke.See other photos in this same album for other steps in the process and other angles on the colored sticks.

Incense bundles of various colors are displayed on the wall of an incense factory outside of Hue, central Vietnam.

Built in the mid-19th century, the Man Mo Temple is one of Hong Kong's oldest temples. This Taoist temple is dedicated to the gods Man and Mo. Besides tourists, photographers, and models, the temple is primarily visited by people seeking a positive turn in their lives from higher powers. This can be done with prayer, incense sticks, or these incense coils, which can be purchased on site and to which one can attach one's pious wish on a red slip of paper.
