Ghana - newly planted tree seedlingNG by ARC - The Alliance of Religions and Conservation

The Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Ghana has sent ARC the first photos of an ambitious programme to plant two million trees around the country and train communities and fire fighters to nurture and protect them.

The programme was first detailed in its seven year plan launched at Windsor Castle in November 2009 and is designed both to help poor communities meet their livelihood needs and to restore degraded savannah. Around 100,000 seedlings are to be planted in community woodlots.

Villagers are harvesting trees planted in sustainable woodlots for fuel - this practice will alleviate the pressure of removing trees from natural forests. The Church also offers training in the manufacture of energy efficient stoves, so in future less wood will be required, and is also training 200 fire-fighter volunteers who will learn how to stop forest fires in replanted areas.

"Computing Science Chair Filled

Professor Leslie Keedy has taken up his appointment to the Foundation Chair of Computer Science at the University.

Professor Keedy, who is 44 years of age, was educated in the United Kingdom, and first studied theology at King’s College, London University graduating B.D. (Hons) in 1964. This was followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in theology from Trinity College, Oxford University (1968). From 1968 to 1974 he worked with International Computers Ltd in the UK and West Germany, initially ass a systems programmer. After being promoted to design consultant he became a member of the central design team responsible for VME-B, the main general purpose operating system for the ICL2900 series of computers. He came to Monash University in 1974 as a Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science. He was promoted to senior Lecturer in 1978 and completed a further PhD (Computer Science) as a staff member of that University. In 1982 he was appointed full professor of Computer Science and head of the Operating Systems Research Group at the Technical University of Darmstadt, West Germany, with seven academic and technical staff. In 1984 he became Director of the Institute of Practical Computer Science, which had a staff of five professors with their research groups.

Professor Keedy’s research interests (in which he has gained a notable international reputation) are in the areas of operating systems, computer architecture and hardware, software engineering and programming language design. In 1976 he established the MONADS Project at Monash with the aim of developing techniques which improve the quality of large software engineering projects and which provide a better technological basis for guaranteeing the privacy of information in computer systems. This research has led to the development of a workstation computer, the MONADS-PC, which recently attracted international recognition at the 1985 Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, where a paper describing its design was designated best paper in the hardware section. The other main achievement of the project has been the development of a new very high level programming language LENIBNIZ, the work on which has mainly been carried out in Darmstadt

The Chair of Computer Science is located in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science. The policy of the Department is to promote the application of mathematical disciplines to other fields including physical, social and life sciences, engineering, economics, commerce and the management sciences. Professor Keedy’s initial aims are to re-establish the MNADS Project here in Newcastle and to introduce a first year Computer Science course in the near future. He is also interested in promoting the use of computing throughout the University, including areas not conventionally associated with modern technology.

Professor Keedy’s background of research and teaching will greatly aid the integration of computing studies within the University. In particular, with the appointment also of Professor Cantoni to a Chair of Computer Engineering last year, the University is now in a very strong position to provide academic leadership in this growing and all-important area of contemporary study."

"PROFESSOR LES KEEDY, the University's Foundation Professor of computer Science, has resigned.

He expects to take up his new position - Professor of Computer Science (operating systems) at the University of Bremen, West Germany - in November.

He also becomes Director of a new Institute for Operating systems and Computer Architecture within a new Computer Science Technology Centre currently being established by the State of Bremen.

Bremen is a major seaport, with a population of about 750,000. It has a long commercial and cultural history, being one of the mediaeval free city states of the Hanseatic League. Even today it is a separate free city-state within the Federal Republic of Germany, and is one of the most important commercial centres in northern Europe.

Professor Keedy said there was a separate Faculty of computer Science at the University of Bremen, with seven full professors and four associate professors. His establishment would include four personal research assistants and a secretary.

He expected to use the research positions to gather together his former research team from his earlier period as Professor at the Technical University of Darmstadt. He had also been offered an extremely generous establishment grant (about A$170,000) and funding which would enable him to visit Australia regularly to maintain links with the MONADS research group, which would continue at the University of Newcastle under the leadership of Senior Lecturer in Computer Science, Dr John Rosenberg.

He has also resigned as Head of the Department of Computer Science with effect from June 10. He said this was the earliest date at which Council can appoint a replacement, following an election in the Department.

He believed that there should be a period of transition for the new Head of Department, since there were several decisions to be made of the next few months which were of particular importance for the future of the Department, including whether the Department was to be permitted to move into the new computing and Teaching building, and the resolution of some difficulties perceived to exist in connection with quotas on students entering Computer Science I.

Professor Keedy took up this appointment at this University in March, 1985. He resigns after having worked hard to establish a viable computer science discipline, which he says he sees as important to the University as a potential growth area, and to Newcastle and the Hunter Region for the contribution it can make to the future economic prosperity of the region.

The Department of Computer Science now offers a full major in Computer Science, which can be taken as part of the degrees of BA, BCom, BEc, BMath and Bsc, and part of which is also included in the BEng(comp) degree; a degree of Bachelor of Computer Science, which, since its introduction in 1987, has proved to be immensely popular with students; a degree of Bachelor of Computer Science (Honours), which has also proved to be popular; a new Diploma in Computing, a Master of Computer Science (by research thesis) and a Master of Computing (by coursework and project).

The new Department of Computer Science, of which Professor Keedy became first Head in January 1987, has grown to six academics. He said that through its research programme it had established itself as one of Australia's leading computer science research centres, attracting higher research funding that most other Australian computer science departments, including those at the University of Sydney, the ANU and Monash University.

Professor Keedy said that during his time in Newcastle he had had to spend a great deal of time on administrative matters, to the detriment of his research. It became clear that he had reached a decision point in his career: either to become a full-time administrator - a possibility which he considered very seriously - or concentrate on research.

In the end, 'the opportunities favoured the later,' he said. 'As one of several computer science professors at Bremen I will have much more opportunity - and better resources - to concentrate on my research than in Newcastle.

Since taking the decision to resign I have worked hard to ensure that I will leave behind a viable department. I feel confident that I have achieved this, but fear that if the department is not treated fairly in future matters such as allocation of new academic and technical positions, or with respect to proposed changes in quota arrangements, or if, for example, the department is not permitted to relocate into the new computing building, then the stability of the department could perhaps be put at risk. No good computer scientist has any difficulty finding suitable positions in other universities.'

Professor Keedy said he was a strong supporter of the thrust behind the Green Paper, although he did not agree with all the details.

He expressed doubts that some academics in the University were capable of coming to terms with the changed climate, and felt that this would be a key issue affecting the future success and prosperity of the University.

He also expressed some doubts about the ability of University bodies to come to terms with the changed climate and made special mention of what he described as the poor performance of the Senate Research Committee over the past year.

One of the key events which had contributed towards his decision to leave Newcastle, he said, had been the rule change in 1986 which allowed academics below the rank of professor to become Deans. He had in fact applied for his new position a few weeks after the election of a new Dean of Mathematics under the new rules.

'Although I understand the arguments for democracy in universities, I firmly believe that it is a great mistake to elect academic leaders in the way it now occurs in Newcastle. In such a system, one cannot expect to attract or retain good professors.'

Professor Keedy added that he welcomed the changes now being planned in the University's structure, including both the new school structure, where he particularly welcomed the formation of a new Faculty of Information Sciences, and the prospect of amalgamation with the Hunter Institute of Higher Education.

He hoped that academics would work together in support of these changes, without which the University's future would be 'bleak indeed'.

Global Open Day on UNSCR 1325 in Iraq by United Nations Iraq (UN Iraq)

On Global Open Day on UNSCR 1325, Calls for Greater Women Role in Future of post-Daesh Iraq

Baghdad/Erbil, 24 October 2017 – The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), jointly with UNWOMEN within the context of the observing the Global Open Day and the 17th Anniversary of UN Security Council resolution 1325, held consultative forums with senior political leadership in Baghdad and Erbil on 23 and 24 October, with the focus on strengthening women’s political participation.

In both Baghdad and Erbil, the concerns of women, their participation in society, the political process and decision-making were raised. Participants were categorical in stating that there have been long-standing barriers which have continued to impede women’s participation and representation in the political process. Particularly, participants noted a regression in women’s representation in executive, legislative as well as judiciary branches of government. Further, participants decried that leaderships of political parties have not given sufficient opportunities to women to fully and equally participate in politics. Recommendations were proposed, including a specific request made to the political leaders to give women an opportunity to be part of the solution. Participants also called for legislation to promote and increase women’s participation in politics and governance as well as to promote them to decision-making positions.

In Baghdad, the meeting on 23 October was organized in collaboration with the Implementation and Follow-up Commission for National Reconciliation in the Office of the Prime Minister. The meeting was attended by the Minister of Health and Environment, H.E. Adila Hammoud, Adviser to the Prime Minister on reconciliation, Mr. Mohammed Salman, the Speaker of Parliament’s representative Dr. Ahmed Rushdy, Advisor to the President of the Republic, Juan Masoum, heads of political blocs and other government representatives, parliamentary Committee heads, MPs as well as academics, in addition to representatives of UNAMI and UNWOMEN.

H.E. Ms. Adila Hammoud, the Minister of Health and Environment, stated that to overcome social barriers and challenges impeding women’s participation required a concerted effort and commitment from political leaders and decision-makers, noting “the significant successes of many Iraqi women on the executive and legislative levels and their ability to play an essential role in peace making and societal reconciliation.”

Mr. Mohammad Salman of the reconciliation committee, in his opening remarks, said the meeting is a “golden opportunity for all to benefit from the accumulated experiences of peoples” that the UN holds as it works to support women issues.

Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Ján Kubiš, emphasized in his remarks at the meetings in Baghdad and Erbil that women in Iraq are agents of positive change and they must be given the opportunity to act in that critical role in shaping the future of their country in the post-Daesh period.

“Equality and empowerment of women must be central to all peace, justice, reconciliation and reform efforts in the post-Daesh period. Women’s participation is crucial for an effective, successful and sustainable peace processes and reform. Only through their direct and meaningful participation their voices will be heard,” Mr. Kubiš said.

The consultative meeting in Erbil was convened on 24 October by UNAMI in collaboration with UN WOMEN and the Kurdistan Regional Government’s High Council for Women Affairs. It was attended by Interior Minister H.E. Mr. Karim Sinjari, Minister of the Department of Foreign Relations H.E. Mr. Falah Al-Mustafa, Secretary-General of the High Council for Women’s Affairs Ms. Pakhshan Zangana, Spokesperson to Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani, Safeen Dizayi, and women leaders, in addition to representatives of UNAMI and UN WOMEN.

In remarks at the Erbil meeting, Ms. Pakshan Zangana, the Secretary-General of the High Council for Women’s Affairs in Kurdistan Region of Iraq, said the recent crisis in Kirkuk have seen displacements of civilians including women, the elderly and children. She urged the UN to strengthen its efforts towards addressing the needs to those displaced.

In Erbil, Mr. Kubiš acknowledged the efforts of the Cross-Sector Task Force on the implementation of the Iraq National Action Plan on 1325. “Regardless of all issues between Baghdad and Erbil, the collaboration of women group representatives from both Baghdad and Erbil has been remarkable. It is a good model of constructive cooperation that should inspire also the process of finding solutions to the current crisis between Baghdad and Erbil. Women must play a key role also in these endeavors.”

The SRSG recalled the particularly brutal treatment of women and girls by Daesh terrorists and pointed out to UN Security Council resolution 2379, passed in September to establish an investigative team to support domestic efforts to hold Daesh accountable.

UN WOMEN Representative in Iraq, Ms. Dina Zorba, in both meetings in Baghdad and Erbil, commended the government, civil society, and national and international partners for continued commitment to UNSCR 1325, stating that Iraq is the first country in the Middle East to launch a national plan to implement 1325. She urged the government to work to ensure gender issues are incorporated in all democratization and nation building agendas, and called on the UN, the government, and the International Community to continue to advocate for and protect the rights of women and girls.

We are visiting the Tashilhunpo Monastery

Tashilhunpo Monastery , founded in 1447 by the 1st Dalai Lama, is a historic and culturally important monastery in Shigatse, the second-largest city in Tibet.

The monastery was sacked when the Gorkha Kingdom invaded Tibet and captured Shigatse in 1791 before a combined Tibetan and Chinese army drove them back as far as the outskirts of Kathmandu, when they were forced to agree to keep the peace in future, pay tribute every five years, and return what they had looted from Tashilhunpo.

The monastery is the traditional seat of successive Panchen Lamas, the second highest ranking tulku lineage in the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. The "Tashi" or Panchen Lama had temporal power over three small districts, though not over the town of Shigatse itself, which was administered by a dzongpön (prefect) appointed from Lhasa.

POST-RACE - The Multyfarnham 5KM Road Race and Fun Run 2015 by Peter Mooney

This is a photograph from the finish of the 4th Annual Multyfarnham (Multy) 5KM Road Race and Fun Run which was held in the village of Multyfarnham about 15KM west of Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Wednesday 3rd June 2015 at 20:00. An incredible and unprecedented crowd of almost 300 participants took to the route including runners, joggers and walkers which was on an out-and-back course on beautiful country roads. The weather was perfect for racing and running. The fast course combined with the good weather conditions provided personal and seasonal bests for many of the participants. The GAA Club and Community Centre provided car-parking and the race headquarters. Overall this was a very well organised race event which on the evidence of tonight's race can grow even further in future years. As this and other photographs in this set shows there is nothing like an evening race in summer time in rural Ireland. Multyfarnham's setting amongst the rolling hills of north county Westmeath and not far from the shores of Lough Derravaragh provides a wonderful race setting. The village of Multy is easily accessible and is just two miles off the N4 Dublin Sligo road.

Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

First of all I want to thank LEA (Linden Endowment for the Arts) and The LEA committee (Bryn Oh, Dancoyote Antonelli, Dekka Raymaker, JayJay Zifanwe, L1 Loire, Sasun Steinbeck, Solo Mornington, Werner Kurosawa, PatriciaAnne Daviau -advisor-) who trusted me and other artists (Artistide Despres, Charlotte Bartlett, comet Morigi, Freewee Ling, Glyph Graves, Harter Fall, Merlino Mayo, Mikati Slade, Misprint Thursday, Oberon Onmura, RAG Randt, Secret Rage, Selavy Oh, Sowa Mai, Ux Hax, Zachh Cale) for the first round LEA Land Grants to give me the opportunity to use a big space as a full sim to express my art.

Taking inspiration from the 1st book and a few of other episodes of the "Metamorphoses", word that from greek means "change of shape", written in latin by Publius Ovidius, this new project aims to build a path of multi levels within an allegorical vision related to the current age of crisis and transformation of human beings and our society.

The way to see the whole work would formally very different but conceptually similar to the fresco dedicated to the "Fall of the Giants" by Giulio Romano in the Palazzo Te in Mantua (Mantova), where the representation becomes a metaphor of the times lived and precarious power and human ambitions; So going on other examples are possible like the trasformations of Aracne, Daphne, Icarus, Heliades sisters, Medusa, ect. The outer and inner change of form and substance of living beings and their natural relationships into something different, new and unexpected, from the creative process naturally with technology through the lens of the symbolism of Myth and the squared glass of Science.

It is very intersting to see the origin of name Palazzo Te: "The famous villa, designed for parties, receptions and "idleness" of the Duke of Mantua, was built on an island in direct contiguity with the city center, known since the Middle Ages Tejeto, or Te. The hypothesis most likely derive from the term 'tilietum' (place of linden trees) or from the Celtic 'tezza' linked with Latin 'atteggia' in english 'attitude', both meaning 'hut'." *from

Obviously the project is not complete about the whole huge Ovid's work, and in start I've done just some main episodes, but my intention is to work on it in future, it will take time for sure. Stay tuned.

The Land is unique among all attractions at WDW. No where else can you go for a cruise, take a flight, dine on good food and then take in a movie (even if the movie is a little weak).

Taking inspiration from the 1st book and a few of other episodes of the "Metamorphoses", word that from greek means "change of shape", written in latin by Publius Ovidius, this new project aims to build a path of multi levels within an allegorical vision related to the current age of crisis and transformation of human beings and our society.

The way to see the whole work would formally very different but conceptually similar to the fresco dedicated to the "Fall of the Giants" by Giulio Romano in the Palazzo Te in Mantua (Mantova), where the representation becomes a metaphor of the times lived and precarious power and human ambitions; So going on other examples are possible like the trasformations of Aracne, Daphne, Icarus, Heliades sisters, Medusa, ect. The outer and inner change of form and substance of living beings and their natural relationships into something different, new and unexpected, from the creative process naturally with technology through the lens of the symbolism of Myth and the squared glass of Science.

It is very intersting to see the origin of name Palazzo Te: "The famous villa, designed for parties, receptions and "idleness" of the Duke of Mantua, was built on an island in direct contiguity with the city center, known since the Middle Ages Tejeto, or Te. The hypothesis most likely derive from the term 'tilietum' (place of linden trees) or from the Celtic 'tezza' linked with Latin 'atteggia' in english 'attitude', both meaning 'hut'." *from

Obviously the project is not complete about the whole huge Ovid's work, and in start I've done just some main episodes, but my intention is to work on it in future, it will take time for sure. Stay tuned.

Port Adelaide Elders wool store by aquilareen

Foundation stone 20 Sep 1880 by Chief Secretary, W Morgan, architect William Beattie, opened as wool & grain store opposite the new Port Adelaide Dock, closed, now storage. The practice of “dumping wool” refers to the use of hydraulic presses to compact wool & thus reduce space required in ship’s hold.

“On the occasion of the opening of the Port Adelaide Dock on Monday, September 20, the opportunity was taken by Sir Thomas Elder to ask the Hon. W. Morgan, as Chief Secretary, to lay the foundation-stone of the new store being built for the firm of Messrs. Elder, Smith, and Co. alongside the dock. . . Mr. Beattie had taken care to deposit photographs of their friends Sir Thomas Elder and Mr. Barr Smith in the bottle under the stone. In future ages to come — which would be a long time, judging from the strength of the building.” [Register 21 Sep 1880]

It will be observed by reference to Elder, Smith, and Co.'s lengthy advertisement which appears in our business columns that the firm's opening sale will take place on October 4. “Elder's Wool and Produce Company. . . held the opening sale of the season at our Port Adelaide warehouses on Tuesday, 3rd instant, when we had a crowded attendance of European, Melbourne, and local buyers. Our catalogue comprised 3,120 bales and 22 sacks, out of which we have sold 1,461 bales, and are negotiating further sales.” [Advertiser 7 Oct 1882]

“At the invitation of Messrs. Elder, Smith, & Co. the mayor of Port Adelaide (Mr. J. W. Caire), several of the councillors, and the Port Corporation officers, on Tuesday visited the firm's extensive wool stores, which face the New Dock, Port Adelaide. . . The method of compressing the bales of wool was later observed. Surprise was expressed by some of the-party at the extensive character of the stores, which have accommodation for 20,000 bales of wool. At present, however, the stock is about 16,000 bales. Interest was taken in the way the wool was displayed for the convenience of the various English and Continental buyers, who attend the different sales. . . [The Mayor] referred to the importance of the wool stores at Port Adelaide, and expressed the hope that the depression in the wool market would soon pass away. . . During past seasons, he understood, that Messrs. Elder, Smith, and Co. had employed from 100 to 150 men in their Port wool stores. “Press delegates paid a visit to Port Adelaide on Thursday for the purpose of inspecting Messrs. Elder, Smith and Company's wool stores. . . the store, which has had already 77,000 bales of wool on the premises this season, had about 60,000 bales then in the store. . . In the double dump press they saw two large bales, each about 5 ft. long, put end on end and compressed and banded with hoop iron into one bale only 3 ft. in length and weighing about 7 cwt. “Elder, Smith & Co. Ltd. stores at Port Adelaide handled 199,383 bales of wool last season, a record for any wool store in the world. During the season, before and after a wool sale, the Port's wool stores are a hive of industry as thousands of bales enter and leave each day. A sample lot — about 30 per cent. — is taken from each consignment and placed on the show floor for buyers' inspection. Buyers, under the perfeet natural light of saw-toothed roofing, quickly assess the value of the wool they are shown, select their likely requirements, and fix their price limits for each bale. They bid against each other at the wool auction held in Brookman Buildings, Adelaide. . . Some of Port Adelaide's wool stores are very old. Imbedded in the walls of Elder's ‘Main Store’ are heavy wrought iron rings where sailing vessels moored many years ago. Wreaths Across America 2018 by Presidio of Monterey

Presidio of Monterey, Calif.--Commanders Col. Greg Ford, Presidio of Monterey, and Col. Gary Hausman, Defense Language Institute, welcomed more than 60 community members in a wreath-laying ceremony at the POM cemetery as part of Wreaths Across America Day, December 15.

Volunteers were encouraged to read the names on each grave marker as a way of remembering and honoring the sacrifice of each of the fallen.

Recognizing the many youths who came anxious to show honor to the nearly 400 gravesites, Col. Ford commented, “Our future is here as well as our past.”

Parents took this opportunity in hushed and somber tones to express the solemnity of the event to those too young to appreciate the occasion.

National Wreaths Across America Day, held in December each year, is seen as an opportunity to ‘remember, honor and teach’. Their mission is coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies for veterans at more than 1,400 locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad.

We are visiting the Tashilhunpo Monastery

Tashilhunpo Monastery , founded in 1447 by the 1st Dalai Lama, is a historic and culturally important monastery in Shigatse, the second-largest city in Tibet.

The monastery was sacked when the Gorkha Kingdom invaded Tibet and captured Shigatse in 1791 before a combined Tibetan and Chinese army drove them back as far as the outskirts of Kathmandu, when they were forced to agree to keep the peace in future, pay tribute every five years, and return what they had looted from Tashilhunpo.

The monastery is the traditional seat of successive Panchen Lamas, the second highest ranking tulku lineage in the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. The "Tashi" or Panchen Lama had temporal power over three small districts, though not over the town of Shigatse itself, which was administered by a dzongpön (prefect) appointed from Lhasa.

FINISH: The Multyfarnham 5KM 2015 by Peter Mooney

This is a photograph from the finish of the 4th Annual Multyfarnham (Multy) 5KM which was held in the village of Multyfarnham about 15KM west of Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Wednesday 3rd June 2015 at 20:00. An incredible and unprecedented crowd of almost 300 participants took to the route including runners, joggers and walkers which was on an out-and-back course on beautiful country roads. The weather was perfect for racing and running. The fast course combined with the good weather conditions provided personal and seasonal bests for many of the participants. The GAA Club and Community Centre provided car-parking and the race headquarters. Overall this was a very well organised race event which on the evidence of tonight's race can grow even further in future years. As this and other photographs in this set shows there is nothing like an evening race in summer time in rural Ireland. Multyfarnham's setting amongst the rolling hills of north county Westmeath and not far from the shores of Lough Derravaragh provides a wonderful race setting. The village of Multy is easily accessible and is just two miles off the N4 Dublin Sligo road.
