Today, U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill met with Emerson A. Kretzer, the President of the Missouri Rural Letter Carriers Association, to discuss their joint efforts to ensure reliable delivery service and keep post offices open in rural areas of the state.

“Letter carriers in rural Missouri deliver everything from life-saving medications to business supplies,” said McCaskill, the top-ranking Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. “Ensuring that rural Missourians can depend on their local post office is essential, and I was glad to discuss how we can improve postal service throughout the state.”

McCaskill, a longtime advocate for postal service in rural communities, is widely credited with having waged a successful campaign over several years to save rural post offices and maintain delivery standards. Earlier today, McCaskill introduced bipartisan legislation[LINK] to protect hundreds of post offices around the country from indefinite “emergency closure.” McCaskill has also directed the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to look into reported postal service problems. Last January, McCaskill demanded answers from the Postal Service on how it will protect mail delivery for rural Missourians and efficiently manage the cost-sharing benefits with competitors to carry mail the “last mile,” especially in rural areas.

Improving access to safe sanitation facilities can be especially beneficial to women and girls, as they are more vulnerable to violence when using public facilities or seeking privacy for open defecation. It can also increase school attendance, as without proper facilities, menstruating girls may stay home in order to more easily manage menstrual hygiene (Burt, Nelson and Ray 2016). The best toilets are the ones that people will use and maintain. Toilets for women will be most successful if they consider: design, privacy, security and affordable.

One of the species at the top of my "must improve image" list for 2014. Thankfully this seems to be a species making a bit of comeback in North Antrim. When I first moved up here 7 years ago I could hardly find any but in the past couple of winters there have been several sizable flocks.

Dr. Jennifer Ong for Assembly 2012

Uniquely qualified to run for Assembly District 20’s seat. Here is why…

Over the last twenty years, Dr. Jennifer Ong has made a commitment in her professional work and volunteer efforts to improve the quality of life for all Californians. Having experienced first-hand what decent union jobs can do for families with fair wages, health benefits and a pension- Jennifer’s mother worked at the concession stands in the Oakland Coliseum and her father was a produce man at Lucky’s grocery store- Jennifer and her three siblings who were successful products of local public school education earned their college degrees through their parents’ union benefits and accessible student loans.

Jennifer has been a successful advocate for health care in Sacramento as a leader in the state and county optometric associations and the founder of the Alameda County Hepatitis B Free Campaign. In Washington D.C., Jennifer served as a member of the State Government Relations Executive Board of the American Optometric Association. Jennifer has advocated, monitored and crafted legislative policies such as:

1) SB 120 – The legislation which requires nutritional information to be posted in restaurant chains

2) AB 1224 – The legislation which increases access to vision services for the needy especially those living in remote areas

3) The prevention of the elimination of eye care benefits to Medi-Cal recipients

Jennifer’s legislative experiences around social justice have been extensive while serving as a cohort for Urban Habitat’s Social Equity Caucus and as a leader for various Asian Pacific American organizations. After assisting internationally on behalf of environmental issues, Jennifer returned to her local community, to provide conservation education to Hayward schools, to reduce blight as a member of the Keep Hayward Clean and Green Task Force and to decrease crime while serving on Alameda County’s Family Violence Council.

Jennifer served as the Chair of the Gender and Racial Equity Committee and completed her term as the first appointed Chair of the Budget Committee of the Alameda County Commission on the Status of Women. Acknowledging her experiences as a Filipino immigrant at 11 years old, Jennifer possesses a deep appreciation for the many ways we can all advance the cause of a more just and respectful diverse society.

After acquiring accessible capital for a small business loan, Jennifer purchased and continues to successfully manage her own optometric practice for over 12 years. She prides herself on being a responsible and conscientious small business owner. Jennifer employs 7 members of her office staff and contributes directly to the local economy and the community.

Dr. Jennifer Ong has the skills and experiences to be a leader in Sacramento who will turn challenges into opportunities for restoring success to California.

St Martin Palace Plain, Norwich, Norfolk

A small church, but everything is in place, the tower, the aisles, the clerestories. It is worth making a tour of the outside to see this, for the current configuration of the interior makes it seem unfamiliar, as we shall see. The church sits in a tight little graveyard with traffic on three sides, trees bowering high around and above. But on closer inspection the current appearance of St Martin is essentially that of a substantial Victorian restoration, as a result of a partial collapse of tower and chancel, and the heavy hand of Edward Hakewill.

Despite the proximity to the cathedral (the Palace in question is that of the Bishop) the setting was rather unlovely until a couple of decades ago, because the Norwich city gasworks sat immediately to the north of it. At one time, there had been a plan for a railway that would have cut St Martin off from the Cathedral precincts, but this is an area of regeneration, and today you would not know that such a controversy had ever existed.

The courts building is now on the site of the gasworks, and this led to St Martin being used for several years as the home of the Probation service. Internally, a split level steel and glass mezzanine provided working space above and below the floors. It ascends into the space beneath the tower, reaching ground floor level at both the west end and in the chancel. The aisle chapels have been glassed in and form meeting rooms. It is all crisp and airy, fully functional without detracting from the former character of the church too much, for the inner walls are pretty much intact and unscathed. Of course, it is now very different to how George Plunkett found it in 1934.

Much of the glass was destroyed in the Norwich blitz, but some good figures by Heaton, Butler & Bayne survived and are now isolated in clear glass. The later figures of Christ in Majesty flanked by Longinus and the Blessed Virgin appear to be by the William Morris of Westminster workshop, installed in 1952. Bikin Hayward thought them poor, but they stand up well for the period, especially the figure of Mary.

A surviving piece of Victoriana is the solemn inscription How Dreadful is this Place: This is the House of God, and this is the Gate of Heaven above the south doorway, which must have concentrated the mind a bit. A good 18th century ledger stone features a skull and hourglass backed by crossed bones, and Lady Elizabeth Calpthorpe's table memorial of 1578 is a good example of the seemly Anglicanism of the period.

Today the building is in use as the headquarters of the Norwich Historic Churches Trust, a worthy use no doubt but it does rather give the place the feel of a museum. Back in 2005 when I was here last I asked the kind man from the probation service who let me wander around if it was a suitable building for its then-use. He said that it was, and that the setting generally encouraged everybody to take each other seriously, and so when clients came for the first time they knew that this was a place that would give them a future. Perhaps the same applies now that the building is the focus of giving the city's historic churches a future.

I remember the teeter totters I used to play on. These are so much safer. I remember all my friends and myself trying to leap off when you were on the bottom and watching your friend crashed down. LOL Lucky we all had our teeth and no broken bones.

A brief digression from the Petersen Automotive Museum…

Pictured is my Toyo Nishiki Improved Forest bonsai. The Toyo Nishiki standard has white, pink and red blossoms all on the same plant…except the red is often grafted. White is the dominant flower color. Red does appear, in about 50 years. To do bonsai, you have to have patience, but waiting 50 years for a red branch to appear is beyond the pale.

Brent Walston of Evergreen Gardenworks has supplied a solution to this problem. He has produced Toyo Nishiki Improved, which has made red the dominant flower color. The Improved does produce a white or whitish flower, as you can see. Ultimately, more time is needed because enthusiasts wanting a single-trunk toyo nishiki may get a tree doing only red. I took the multiple-cuttings approach and have been rewarded.

Decided to add some detail to the Ranchero. First, the tires. I had instaled four Firestone tires from a AMT kit, but found them to be too big. To remedy that, I found for sale online four tires and some parts from a diecast Bullit Mustang (Revell 1/24 scale). The tires were perfect, smaller than the ones from AMT, and to meke it even better, I painted some white lines on them. Another Revell part is the tower strut reinforcement, that replaced the one from a old AMT Mustang kit, that was way too big. A nice tool box in the pick up bed gave extra detail.

My improved version of the Repulsion, only to find the size ridiculously long, but oh well!

Improving climate change reporting in the Mediterranean: Science – Media interface

Talk-Café: Stories about people life, what’s is behind 2º C

12nd November 2016

Marrakech (Morocco)

As the climate issue moves further into public policy, journalists will face new challenges in sorting out the political and economic interests of experts with a dizzying array of opinions about the costs and benefits of combating global warming. In an open and creative conversation, some journalists from AMAN and other media will explain, based on their experience, examples of good stories on climate change that got more public impact, as well as the challenges that they face with their chief-editors or public opinion to explain, the policy side of the debate (eg COP), the scientific dimension or the potential economic impact of climate actions.
