In order to eliminate back pain that already bothers you or to stay away from injuries that may occur from day to day activities, it is important to keep the core strong and flexible. There is a number of exercises doctors and personal trainers advise you to do, but how about that time of the day when you are not able to attend a gym or hit the floor for some "ME" time?
There is a solution - SpinaliS chairs for active sitting. As a matter of fact that is the BEST SOLUTION because you don't have to do anything, but sit. At the first glance the SpinaliS chair looks like a well designed regular office chair, but there is a difference - a spring under its seat, which forces your body to keep itself in the balance thus working out your core muscles that in return will help you to get rid of the back pain and will improve your posture.
Check out SpinaliS Apollo Series chairs, which is an ideal choice for women or men with a smaller body type:
www.spinalis-chairs.ca/spinalis-chairs/apollo/
What the Core Does?
The area of the body, which is commonly referred to as the core, is your midsection and it involves all your muscles in that area including the front, back and sides. The core includes the traverse abdominis (TVA), erector spinae, obliques and your lower lats.
These muscles work as stabilizers for the entire body. Core training is simply doing specific exercises to develop and strengthen these stabilizer muscles.
If any of these core muscles are weakened, it could result in lower back pain or a protruding waistlines. Keeping these core muscles strong can do wonders for your posture and help give you more strength in other exercises like running, walking or sitting on a SpinaliS chair.

Today I unveiled my 5 point plan to improve our schools here in Astoria and western Queens. It's inexcusable that the Bloomberg Administration has allowed these trailers to linger in our schools for so long, and as a Councilmember, I will work to shrink class size, facilitate new school construction, and improve parental involvement in our schools. Thank you so much to Councilmember Daniel Dromm, UFT Representative Dermot Smyth, and all the concerned parents of the neighborhood for your support!
Based on reports of the German invasion of France in 1940, the US Army realized its tank force was obsolete. The then-current M2 light tank design was upgraded to M3 standard, which added more armor and improved the suspension for a smoother ride. It retained the older 37mm gun, though the Army was aware the 37mm was inadequate for tank combat; the M3 would be used to supplement the more heavily-armed M4 Sherman then entering production. Moreover, US Army doctrine held that tanks were not supposed to engage other tanks, but rather exploit breakthroughs and tear up enemy rear areas. For this, the high speed of the M3 would be ideal. As another function of tanks, according to the Army, was infantry support, the Stuart was well-equipped with no less than five .30 caliber machine guns.
Production began in late 1941, shortly before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The British Army would be the first to use the M3 in combat, which they dubbed "Stuart," for the Confederate cavalry general J.E.B. Stuart (the name that stuck), or "Honey" for its reliability. Though the British found the 37mm to be nearly useless, too short-ranged, and the crew compartment to be very cramped, they liked the Stuart's reliability--it almost never broke down, even in the extreme conditions of the North African desert--and its speed. If Stuarts could not take on German tanks, they could certainly do a great deal of damage to soft-skinned vehicles and infantry.
The US would soon be using the Stuart in combat as well: the first tank-to-tank combat in American history would come between M3s of the US Army in the Philippines and Japanese Type 97s. The Stuarts came off second-best, but generally speaking the two tanks were comparable. American crews fighting in North Africa in 1942 recognized the same problems as the British, but also found the same values. Occasionally, even the Stuart could score notable successes: in 1943 in Tunisia, Lieutenant Colonel John Waters' task force of over a hundred Stuarts engaged a small force of German Tiger Is and succeeded in knocking them out with close range fire to the engine.
Though the US Army did recognize the Stuart's armament to be completely obsolete by 1943, it was still the best light tank in the inventory. A few improvements in armor and crew comfort were made in the M5 design, and though supplemented by the M24 Chaffee in 1944, Stuarts would form the bulk of Army light units until the end of the war. Others would fight in postwar campaigns in China, Pakistan and Angola, and were in Paraguayan service as late as 2002.
One of the lessons learned during the Tarawa campaign of late 1943 was that Japanese static defenses were very hard to crack. One weapon that was highly effective was the flamethrower, but getting a manpack flamethrower close enough to a bunker was a risky proposition for whoever was wearing it. The solution was to mount a flamethrower on a tank. The Canadians had adopted the British Ronson flamethrower on their Universal Carriers in Italy, and the Marines learned about it. 24 M3A1 Stuarts, withdrawn from service in favor of the M4 Sherman, were obtained by the USMC, and had their 37mm main guns replaced by Ronsons. Nicknamed "Satan" by their crews and the Marines that saw them in action, these modified Stuarts would first see action on Saipan in June 1944. As the Stuart was considered obsolete and vulnerable to light Japanese antitank weapons, the Satan didn't remain in service long, before being replaced by modified Shermans.
This Satan shows the modified turret and the barrel of the Ronson flamethrower; it is part of the Pacific display at the National Museum of Military Vehicles in Dubois, Wyoming.

Improved Civilian Education System offers Army employees new opportunities for professional development
By Amanda Rodriquez, U.S. Army Installation Management Command
SAN ANTONIO – Thirty-four Army civilians from Joint Base San Antonio’s Fort Sam Houston graduate Feb. 15 from the first U.S. Army Civilian Education Course offered by the Army Management Staff College at the U.S. Army Installation Management Academy.
The course marks the initial venture of AMSC’s year-old mobile training team away from its Fort Leavenworth, Kan., headquarters.
“Our first class offered at IMCOM is the Intermediate course,” Mark Smith, a human resources specialist and IMCOM’s CES registrar, said. “A team of instructors from Fort Leavenworth is here now and will return again to offer the CES Basic course in June and September. It’s a great opportunity for our local Army civilians and with classes quickly filling, we’re optimistic about hosting more in 2014.”
The three-week course, which began Jan. 28, is full. In fact, the June Basic course is nearly full as well, thanks to IMCOM’s effort to promote seats, seeking students from other commands. According to Army training staff, strong partnerships among the JBSA Army commands and U.S. Army Management Staff College, which oversees CES, benefit all involved. CES plays a critical role in career development at every level. All eight courses are in demand because they are prerequisites for admission into other military schools and directly impact a civilian employee’s career progression.
“The Civilian Education System is increasingly important to employees for career progression and entrance into senior leader schools,” said Smith. “It’s also a chance to work cooperatively with people from a variety of backgrounds, meeting people you might rarely have the chance to and applying team building skills to multiple scenarios.”
CES courses include online modules followed by classroom instruction. Until establishing the new mobile training teams, classroom time meant temporary duty at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Each course, ranging from foundation level to advanced, is tailored to specific pay grades. Central funding and flexible course delivery methods, like the mobile training team, makes CES more accessible to local Army civilians, according to developers.
While IMCOM invited AMSC and offered to host the course, Smith included all Army commands here in the request for slots. U.S. Army Medical Command headquarters Workforce Development Specialist, Ray Mendoza stressed that a mobile training team teaching the course on-site saves money and increases the number of available training slots.
“By partnering with IMCOM, all local commands and Army civilians benefit,” Mendoza said. “This is a great opportunity for development and networking for civilians. It’s also a less expensive way to get 34 people trained all at once. MEDCOM is sending 16 people over for training – it would take several years to train 16 people, from the same installation, by sending them individually to Leavenworth.”
For employees like Anthony Riddick of IMCOM G-6, participation in training is possible because travel is no longer necessary.
“This works out really well for me,” Riddick said. “My wife is away right now and I’ve got two teenagers at home. I jumped at this opportunity.”
Other recent changes in the program pertain to equivalency credits and transferrable credit for graduate and undergraduate students. “Previously, students who had taken equivalent training had to navigate through Army Training Requirements and Resources System or the Civilian Human Resource Training Application System and request a review in order to receive credit for similar training and development,” said Smith.
The new equivalency process takes place automatically when students register, avoiding redundancy and ensuring each employee’s Army professional development growth is accurately documented. The credit is granted regardless of when the equivalent course was completed. The previous ten-year cap on equivalency training is now obsolete, Smith added.
For employees enrolled in accredited graduate and undergraduate programs, some colleges and universities accept CES courses as transfer credits, depending on school and program of study. Webster, Phoenix and DeVry universities are among those that award credit for CES, according Smith.
For more information about the latest CES courses, visit the course catalog on the Army Training Requirements and Resource system at www.atrrs.army.mil. Civilians wishing to register for courses or request more detailed information about credit equivalency and transfers should contact their local training representative.
"The first thing to say about the new improved Design Museum ......... is that it is an exceptional achievement. It is a space for celebrating and exploring the made and the visual, the magic of human invention, the objects that shape our lives, and the skills and forces that shape them. First glimpses of its permanent and temporary exhibitions suggest intriguing (if strongly western-oriented) displays. This is important, valuable, thrilling stuff, when you consider what the Model T Ford or the iPhone have done for and to the world.
The project, in Kensington High Street, west London, has enrolled some considerable talents: the minimalist designer John Pawson has created the museum’s interior, and OMA, the world-famous architects led by Rem Koolhaas, have both masterplanned the city block in which it stands and designed the luxury apartments that play an important part in making it viable. A relic of 1960s optimism has been restored, the half-beautiful, half-quaint hyperbolic paraboloid roof of the otherwise demolished former Commonwealth Institute, its propensity to leak fixed, and the new museum has been installed under its sheltering wing.
The achievement would have been greater if OMA had designed the museum and Pawson had designed the luxury apartments
New palaces of culture like this don’t happen often or easily, yet the new improved Design Museum has come into being over the decade of the Great Recession and with limited government support. It is the result of 10 years’ effort by its director, Deyan Sudjic, formerly of the Observer. It is the culmination of more than 60 years’ campaigning for good modern design by Terence Conran, the retailer-restaurateur-designer who founded and helps fund the Design Museum. More specifically it owes its origins to the Boilerhouse design gallery at the Victoria and Albert Museum, which Conran helped set up in 1981, which then morphed into the Design Museum, which opened in its first building near Tower Bridge in 1989."
www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2016/nov/13/design-museu...
"The Design Museum is a museum in Kensington, London, which covers product, industrial, graphic, fashion and architectural design. The museum operates as a registered charity, and all funds generated by ticket sales aid the museum in curating new exhibitions. Entrance is free to the museum's permanent collection display, "Designer Maker User". The museum was founded in 1989 by Sir Terence Conran. It was originally located by the River Thames near Tower Bridge, and later relocated to Kensington.
In June 2011, Sir Terence Conran donated £17.5 million to enable the Museum to move in 2016 from the warehouse to a larger site which formerly housed the Commonwealth Institute in west London. This landmark from the 1960s, a Grade II* listed building that had stood vacant for over a decade, was developed by a design team led by John Pawson who made the building fit for a 21st-century museum, whilst at the same time retaining its spatial qualities.
The Design Museum opened in its Kensington location on 24 November 2016. The move gave the museum three times more space than in its previous location at Shad Thames, with the new Swarovski Foundation Centre for Learning, 202-seat Bakala Auditorium and a dedicated gallery to display its permanent collection, accessible free of charge. The move brought the museum into Kensington's cultural quarter, joining the Royal College of Art, V&A, Science Museum, Natural History Museum and Serpentine Gallery."

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Monarch butterfly populations have declined over recent decades due to degraded habitat, but Oregon landowners are making great strides to improve monarch habitat on private lands, with technical and financial assistance from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). Milkweed is a critical component of monarch habitat because it’s the only plant on which they will lay their eggs, and it’s a vital food source for monarch caterpillars. Just one example of this partnership at work is the recent establishment of milkweed clusters on the E4 Ranch easement in Benton County, Oregon. Under this project, NRCS enrolled 192-acres of private land into a 30-year wetland easement in 2005. As part of the easement contract, NRCS and the USFWS provided financial and technical assistance to restore the site to its native wetland prairie condition. Before the restoration, the land was a flat pasture, filled with a single-species of grass for cattle grazing. Now, the site is a diverse landscape filled with native trees, plants, and shrubs—including pollinator habitat such as gumweed and milkweed. NRCS photo by Tracy Robillard.

My first attempt at wedding cookies. Though I think that I am improving slowly, I realize that I still have a very long way to go. There are a lot of things that I would do differently with these cookies next time, but I was short on time and exhausted from re-baking and re-doing. Having said that, I still learned a lot about icing consistency and some other things.
Sadly, the sheen from the white and purple luster dust that I painted onto certain areas of these cookies was lost in photographing, so I'll have to figure out how to capture pearlescence and shimmer in pictures. I also don't know why these came out so grainy/poor quality. So my camera skills are definitely a work in progress.
These dresses were a bit of a headache for me. I messed up so many cookies trying to narrow it down to five dress designs that I liked, and could make multiples of. I finally figured out what I liked, and went with it. Though they may be considered overly simple, I am a total sucker for simplicity. Perhaps I'll make my way into more intricate designs in the future. Some of these cookies were dry dusted with luster dust, which you can't see in the photos. Many of the white and purple accents were painted with wet luster dust, which you can just barely see in the photos.

Your boss is finally convinced by you to replace the office chair with an ergonomic chair. After working in the new chair for a day, you feel much better than before and can focus on work for longer time. After working for a while, your back pain also starts to improve. Your colleagues can also notice that you are more engaged and productive than in the past few months.
The ergonomic chair for computer users is designed to help you sit comfortably for long periods of time at work. They are more adjustable than standard office chairs and allow you to adjust to your body or seating preferences.
These chairs increase your productivity and increase your job satisfaction, and they also reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries. Here are five specific reasons why an ergonomic chair can relieve your waist and back pain.
1.Support proper posture when sitting on ergonomic chairs
The most important reason that ergonomic chair for computer users can improve waist and back pain is that they are designed to support your natural posture and reduce stress on your body. The seat back usually extends from the shoulder to the seat position. The lower back forms a slightly curved forward structure to match the natural curve of the lumbar spine. This is often called lumbar support because it helps protect the lumbar spine.
The adjustable armrest of the ergonomic chair supports your elbows and forearms as your arms naturally hang next to your body. This allows you to use your keyboard and mouse without causing fatigue in your shoulder and arm muscles. Adjusting the seat height allows you to lay your feet flat on the floor with your hips and knees bent to about 90 degrees.
Some ergonomic chairs have backs that can be moved forward or backward to reduce the depth of the seat and prevent the front edge from cutting into the back of the knee.
2. Proper hip and pelvis alignment when sitting on ergonomic chairs
A common cause of back pain caused by incorrect sitting is improper alignment of the hips and pelvis. The top of the pelvis should be level to prevent tilting forward or backward. When the computer chair you sit in a correct posture, the pelvis bone structure known as a bone to be flush with each other, are located in the front and rear portions of the pelvic bone. When these bony structures are horizontal, your waist should be slightly arched with the raised parts facing forward.
If you sway from side to side, you should feel the pressure on the bone structure called the ischial tuberosity. These are also called ischias because they should be the weight-bearing part of the pelvis when sitting. If you've ever sat on a hard bench, you will most likely feel your ischial tuberosity press into a hard surface.
3. Prevent shaking and lean forward head posture when sitting on ergonomic chairs
When you sit down, the lumbar spine bends and your shoulders roll forward to create a slack posture. In this position, your scapula is away from the thoracic spine and your head is moved forward or extended. When you look up at your computer monitor, your neck moves to an extended position. If you continue working in this position, this can cause muscle strain, pain, and headaches.
Internal and external factors can cause slackness. Internal factors include limited hip flexion range, tight hamstrings, obesity, and weak torso (core) muscles that fail to keep the spine upright against gravity. External factors are factors outside the body, such as limitations of chair design. These include seat lengths that are too long or too short, seat backs that are too vertical, and armrests that are too low.
Ergonomic chair for computer users may not change your internal constraints, but they are specifically designed to correct external factors. Adjustable seat depth and contours of the seat back support the waist, prevent lazy body states, and promote you to sit in place. Some chairs also allow you to adjust the angle or tilt of the seat back. Use a properly adjusted ergonomic chair to prevent looseness and forward head posture.
4. Reduce repeated bending of the body on ergonomic chairs for computer users
A side effect of sitting poorly on a standard chair is that it requires repetitive bending of the body to ease it. This is likely to happen several times a day and can cause pain in your waist. Sitting on an ergonomic chair with good back support will allow you to sit more straight. This will prevent you from having to move more and effectively prevent your waist from adding extra pressure.
5. Improve comfort when sitting on ergonomic chairs
Many ergonomic chairs for computer users are made of higher quality materials. Seat and back cushions to improve fitness. Some ergonomic chairs have extra lumbar support built into the design. If the legs are shorter, lower the chair and slide the seat back forward to reduce the seat depth. You can also raise the armrest to support your elbows. The key to comfort is being able to adjust almost every part of the chair to fit a variety of body types and sizes.
Ergonomic chair for computer users can improve your pain in the back by improving your sitting posture. Ergonomic seats have a wide range of adjustability, allowing computer users to achieve a more customized fit posture than standard chairs. They can help with a variety of musculoskeletal disorders, including neck, middle back and lower back pain. While ergonomic chairs are often more expensive than standard office chairs, they can have a huge impact on computer users' productivity and job satisfaction. The improved Lattice Truss was developed by Brigadier General Herman Haupt (1817-1905) who was Chief of Military Railroads for the Union Army during the Civil War. A Philadelphia born civil and military engineer, author, professor, inventor, and industrialist, Haupt’s improved lattice truss bridge was a response to Ithiel Town’s 1820 and 1835 patents for the plank lattice timber truss. Haupt used the analytical methods he developed in the 1840s to design a more efficient lattice truss which consisted of web members positioned only at locations which required support. Redundant members were removed, resulting in the improved lattice truss as described in his book General Theory of Bridge Construction published in 1851. The Bunker Hill Covered Bridge is the only remaining example in wood of the Improved Lattice Truss by General Herman Haupt. The bridge is a designated National Cvil Engineering Landmark. Here's one of my couple-of-clicks™ fixes to remove a colorcast from an underwater photo. (Assuming Photoshop software used)
- Open your photo
- Choose Image - Adjustments - Threshold…
- Your photo will turn black and white temporarily
- Slide the slider all the way to the left to find the darkest/blackest point of the photo. Mark that point with the eyedropper tool. (Command-click)
- Slide the slider all the way to the right to find the brightest/whitest point. Mark that with the eyedropper tool also.
- Cancel the Threshold… command.
- If it went well there are two marked points marked 1 and 2.
- Choose Image - Adjustments - Curves… (Command-M)
- The curves tool has eyedroppers for black, 50% and white spots of the image.
- Select black eyedropper and click on the marked point you marked as the blackest point. Your photo should get an improved contrast. Repeat this for the white point and your photo will be balanced. The cast whites will be corrected.
Proceed cleaning up your photo!
Smile with a dramatic improvement of the original photo.
