It's not always empty down there, despite my photo stream implying otherwise....

Two different flowers in comparison of size

As the name implies, this reflection nebula associated with the star Rigel looks suspiciously like a fairytale crone. Formally known as IC 2118 in the constellation Orion, the Witch Head Nebula glows primarily by light reflected from the star. The color of this very blue nebula is caused not only by blue color of its star, but also because the dust grains reflect blue light more efficiently than red. A similar physical process causes Earth’s daytime sky to appear blue. (ref: NASA)

An article has just appeared on Birdguides that implies that the provenance of the Peak District bird has supposedly been revealed; www.birdguides.com/news/origin-of-wandering-bearded-vultu... . It says that a young Lammergeier was rescued on 15 May, having been found exhausted near the town of Tours in North-west France. The bird had no wing tags, rings or satellite tags so a blood sample was taken. Analysis of its blood showed that he is a male known as Pierro, that was hatched in the wild in a nest at the Bargy Massif in Haute-Savoie in the Alps in 2019 and whose father was the first wild-hatched bird from the reintroduction project in the Alps. This scheme has been running for 30 years and there are now around 55 breeding pairs in the Alps. Pierro was looked after for more than a month until he had regained strength and body condition, and was released on 7 July in the Vercors National Park on the western fringes of the Alps, not far from his birth place. He was also fitted with a GPS tag before his release. But a satellite tag isn't evident in any photos I've seen of the Howden bird and the photo that accompanies the article shows Pierro lacks that small growth on the lower mandible that the Howden bird has. And finally the dates don't match as Pierro was released from captivity near the Alps on 7 July, but the Howden bird has been present in the Peak District environs since 26 June. But it does give an indication of the likely origin of the Peak District bird if there are 55 pairs in the Alps and the young may have a tendency to wander. The fact that this bird is not tagged or ringed, suggests it is a wild bred bird, though we don't know whether either or both its parents were wild bred.

This mood of this photo implies that it should be titled "The Fair Is Going", but that would be lying. The The Arizona State Fair starts Oct. 13.

I had a very vivid dream about this ferris wheel last night. The workmen who were constructing it had just completed it and somehow I ended up in line for the "first ride." They had just finished tightening the last bolt and had not yet even given it a test run, yet they were still loading people onto it. Needless to say I was very nervous about the whole proposition. I was next in line, so I ran across the aluminum platform towards the car, whose door was being held open for me... What happened next? I woke up... Maybe ACT II will play out in tonight's dream theatre?

-Added to the Cream of the Crop pool as most interesting.

The exteriors of cathedrals and other Gothic churches were decorated with sculptures of a variety of fabulous and frightening grotesques or monsters. These included the gargoyles, the chimeras (hybrids), the dragons, the tarasque, and other figures, taken largely from legend and mythology. They were part of the visual message for the illiterate worshippers, symbols of the evil and danger that threatened those who did not follow the teachings of the church. These figures also had a more practical purpose. They were the rain spouts of the Cathedral; rainwater ran from the roof into lead gutters, then down channels on the flying buttresses out the mouths of the grotesques. The longer the grotesque, the farther the water was projected from the walls, protecting the walls and windows from water damage. Multiple numbers were used to distribute the water as widely as possible. A close look at the mouths of this grotesque will show the lead pipe through which the rainwater will exit.

Additional information on this and other features of French Gothic architecture may be obtained at Wikipedia.

The name implies that this is a tropical species but it also occurs throughout the Southern Himalayas, so also goes by the name of Himalayan Porcupine (Histrix brachyura). Its scientific name translates as short-tailed porcupine, even though its tail is quite long, but this distinguishes it from the Long-tailed Porcupine (Trichys fasciculata), which is altogether less spiny. Although porcupines superficially resemble Hedgehogs the two are unrelared. Hedgehogs are insectivores like Shrews, while Porcupines are rodents like Beavers. Malayan Porcupines inhabit woodlands, feeding nocturnally in grassy areas, and hiding during the day in dens. Unlike some species Malayan Porcupines cannot "throw" their spines, but they can hurl themselves backwards at their enemies. They also rattle their quills like a rattlesnake when they feel threatened. The spines are modified hairs and are incredibly sharp. I photographed this female, that had a half-grown youngster nearby, at Tangjiahe in Sichuan, China. It was taken at night using torchlight.

As the title implies, my desk is a wreck right now. So for the next couple of photos, I will be using this background.

Top Row

--Left to Right--

Mr. Camera: I finally downsized the camera head. I am not too sure if I like it but it it easier for storage and display

Dr. Light: Bad Cop helmet, Zod head, Star Wars torso with glow in the dark tiled stud (get it...glow in the dark...light... I'll stop), Syndrome legs

Reaper: I've been working on this guys for a while but Adam perfected him with this old hood piece which I decided to use that element. He also has Brickwarriors Blades

Tempest: Many of you requested this head so I gave it to him. Also finally got him Cole's hair which I Originally planned giving him in the first place.

Bottom Row

--Left to Right--

Frank Boles: I gave him Finn's hair, Bifur's head, New official vest which is from Barbara Gordon, and new legs from the cmf 15 Kendo guy

Steel: Black Vulcan head, Nexo Knight armor, Shadow Trooper torso, Thor legs

KG Beast: I gave him the hand cannon thing and new legs a while ago, but the head and cowl design was taken from Dylan. I gave him Captain Marvel's head instead of Red Hood's however.

The Andean Motmot, as the English name implies, is the Andean representative of the "Blue-crowned Motmot" complex. For many years, all members of this group were considered to be conspecific, but this group now is reclassified as representing five different species. The Andean Motmot occurs in humid montane forests of the Andes mountains of South America, from Colombia south to Bolivia. Andean motmot is a big bird about 50 cm from beak to tail.

These birds often sit still, and in their dense forest habitat can be difficult to see, despite their size. They eat small prey such as insects and lizards, and will also regularly take fruit.

The Casa de la Panadería (Bakery House), as the name implies, no longer offers bread and sweet treats because it is now a municipal and cultural building on the north side of the Plaza Mayor. Plaza Mayor is one of Madrid’s most famous squares and it is in the central part of the city so it’s a great place to start your visit. Read about the history of this square and the top six things to see and do in this famous Spanish square!

The negation of pleasure, of the world, of manifestation is equivalent to an implicit affirmation of the Principle, which in relation to the world is “void” (shûnya in Sanskrit).

Suffering transposes the problem to the plane of what is most intimately human; it is for man like a fissure in his existential illusion.

There is no spirituality that is not founded, in one of its constituent elements, on the negation of this dream; there is no spirituality devoid of ascetic elements: even simple mental concentration implies sacrifice.

When the concentration is continuous, it is the narrow path, the dark night: the soul itself, this living substance full of images and desires, is sacrificed.

Distress affirms the Principle by denying manifestation; but noble enjoyment affirms the Principle by direct analogy and becomes in this way a possible channel for intellection. The question of opportuneness arises only on the level of individual applications.
