Kavalcare Solar System for Jhpiego Mid-Wife Clinic Dec8, 2014

Every year, 12,000 women in Pakistan die of birth complications. The Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) Services Component, implemented by MCHIP/Jhpiego, aims at preventing maternal, newborn, and child deaths by ensuring skilled birth attendance (SBA) through a total market approach, empowered community, timely referral of obstetric and neonatal complications to an emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmONC) facility, and improved access to child care.

Lack of electricity in remote areas is a major issue that often leads to obstetric complications and newborn deaths. Refrigerated storage is vital for the effectiveness of life saving drugs and vaccines. Ice boxes are used in remot areas of this purpose but it is an ineffective method especially when easy availability of ice is a problem. To overcome these issues, Lodhie Foundation in association with Maternal and Child Health Integrated Program/JHPIEGO, extended its Kavalcare program and provided a Solar Powered System to a remote clinic located at village Haji Usman Jhakro near Makli, District Thatta. System provides sufficient power to operate a small refrigerator, a fan and 3 lamps 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. It was designed, manufactured and installed by Shaan Technologies private Limited Karachi. After installation of Solar System in August 2014, this small remote clinic is serving a community of 10,000 plus persons who lives in village Haji Usman and surrounding areas. On an average 10 patients visits this clinic each day. Clinic also provides up to 15 birth attendance and new born care in a month.

This is a leaf from a Register of Writs ("Registrum Brevium") that was written in England, probably in London or Westminster, c.1350.

The text is from a Register of Writs, a book that was produced to provide a range of writs previously issued in Chancery that could serve as exemplars in the pursuit of any action in the protection of rights or liberties – the first step in the judicial process and the only means of implementing the law enacted in Statutes and which were the basis of medieval common law. The details of each writ are written briefly, thus giving the name “Registrum Brevium”.

Whilst I find the text virtually impossible to read (it is written in an "anglicana" chancery hand), it does seem that the first writ identified on the verso with paraph marks has something to do with a blood relationship. I say this because the word “consanguinity” (or derivations of it) is/are written in both the marginal introduction and the writ itself.

The size of the leaf is 192mm x 127 (7 11/20ins. x 5 ins.).

PROVENANCE: -

The leaf arrived in a card frame with some provenance attached.

The first is a slip with the reference “TFI 1964” and containing the following information: -

“FROM REGISTRUM BREVIUM, a most rare legal manuscript dated ca.1350 on vellum in a fine script that harkens to Carolingian. The black has faded to a soft brown, although the red and blue item notations have retained their rich colours. The blue is undoubtedly Lapis. This exceptional work is the recordings of the judicial proceedings in the reign of King Edward III, cases tried at the historic court of Westminster during one of England's most eventful periods. A very special item and a piece of history.”

The second is a business slip of “M. Revak & Co., Art, Letters, Literature of the Law, 1440 North Stone, Tucson, Arizona 85705 with an indication of a price of $600 (which has been altered from $500).

There are also pencil notes which are probably auction house or dealer reference numbers. These are BBH(over)X/CO and 14865.

The reference “TFI 1964” is a reference of Foliophiles Inc. that was the organisation of New York book dealer George M.L. Brown. Brown sold the company to a businessman Alfred Stites who changed the name to the Society of Foliophiles. Alfred Stites created portfolio sets of manuscripts under the title “Pages from the Past” and it is possible that this leaf is from one of those portfolios.

OTHER LEAVES: -

There is old (original?) foliation of “lxxxxij” (folio 92) in the upper right corner of the recto of this leaf. I have so far found only two other single leaves of which one is certainly from the same manuscript and the other is most probably from the same manuscript. They are: -

1. Columbia, University of Missouri, Ellis Library, Special Collections, RARE FO Z113.P3 item 8, part of a collection of 159 leaves and artefacts, Pages of the Past distributed by Foliophiles, Inc., of Washington D.C., the set dated 1967. Size given as 181mm x 130mm with 33 lines. The recto shows an old folio number of “lxxij” (72).

2. Phillip J. Pirages, catalogue 70 (2016), item 198 at $1,800. Size given as 188mm x 126mm with 33 lines. The picture is of the verso of the leaf so there is no folio number showing.

GENERAL COMMENTS: -

Whilst this leaf has suffered some mild age related wear it is from a type of manuscript from which it is uncommon to find single leaves. Although I have only been able to find two other examples that could have probably been from the same manuscript there could be upwards of 150 others elsewhere. I have been fortunate to have been able to add this leaf to the collection.

REGISTER OF WRITS OR REGISTRUM BREVIUM: -

The best description of a “Register of Writs” that I have found is that attached to the Pirages leaf in their catalogue. It states as follows: -

This is an uncommonly seen example of a leaf from a manual of procedural law known as the “Registrum Brevium” or “Register of Writs,” which functioned rather like case law digests in the modern practice of law. By listing the grounds on which previous cases had been filed, the registers provided lawyers with a reference list of causes of action that could be brought in the court. According to the Ames Foundation, “Their interest lies in the fact that no two of them are alike. Rather, each seems to have been made up to serve the needs and the interests of the person who had them made. . . . The selection of writs or statutes may be standard or quite idiosyncratic. Most of them seem to have been made for practising lawyers or administrators,” and, as such, they “provide an interesting insight into what lawyers and administrators in a given period thought might be useful.”

Agahi to implement the Nokia-UNESCO Mobile Learning initiative to deliver quality education to teachers

Nokia Pakistan and UNESCO collaborate to launch Mobile Learning for Teacher’s in Pakistan using Nokia Education Delivery App to facilitate teacher training via mobile phones

Nokia Pakistan and UNESCO Islamabad launched the project “Mobile Learning Project for Teacher’s Professional Development” today as formal collaboration in the presence of senior government officials, Nokia representatives and UNESCO representatives. As part of this program, UNESCO and Nokia are joining hands, where Nokia is providing its mobile phones and its application “Nokia Education Delivery (NED) for UNESCO’s project on ‘use of ICT for professional development of public school teachers’ in remote areas.

Since 2011 NED has turned into an open source solution to improve livelihoods, and in order to support such mobile learning innovations to be filled with life in Pakistan, The project will be implemented by AGAHI, a UNESCO partner and a non-profit foundation working in the area of communication and media policy design.

Nokia developed NED to allow using a mobile phone to access and download videos and other educational materials from a constantly updated education library. Operating in hundreds of schools and having reached millions of students in the Philippines, Tanzania, Chile and Colombia, Nokia Education Delivery has been shown to improve study results and increase retention among students.

This collaboration is part of the agreement signed last year between UNESCO and Nokia at international level to promote the use of mobile technologies to further the objectives of “Education for All”. As part of this agreement Nokia is developing applications and new Mobile technologies offering access to information and enrich learning environments at global level.

In Pakistan, through the project “Mobile Learning for Teachers” Nokia’s Education Delivery application will help UNESCO to enable the delivery of high- quality educational materials to teachers who lack training and resources though mobile phones giving an opportunity to teachers to train themselves on the same level as professionally competent teachers.

Speaking about the project, UNESCO Director, Kozue Kai Nagata said, “In 21st century Public- private partnerships are enjoying growing attention and support as a new and sustainable modality for development. We are confident to collaborate with Nokia to provide us with the best platform to train public school teachers. Nokia Education Delivery is fit to match our need of delivering quality training to a large number of public school teachers across Pakistan through the project named “Mobile Learning for Teachers”

Amir Jahangir, President AGAHI and a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum, shared his views on the launch that “Pakistan is a knowledge starved country, where universal education has its own challenges. To meet the target of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) on education, Pakistan needs to address its education challenges through innovation and technology which can reach to a larger population with cost effective solutions”.

Speaking about the launch of NED program, Ulrike Vott Nokia Sustainability Manager for Middle East said, “Nokia Education Delivery facilitates education in a fun and interactive way. In addition to the NED software, Nokia offers program implementation support for the benefit of Pakistan’s education landscape.” The Nokia Education Delivery software system has two modules. The first module is installed on a Nokia mobile phone and contains a browse able catalog of educational videos. The second module is installed on the computer of the education administrator. It manages the organization’s mobile video library, so that videos can be added, deleted and updated. It also provides information on the usage of different videos.”

This unique pilot project for Pakistan has been initiated by UNESCO and AGAHI aims at using Mobile phones as medium for training teachers, where the teachers in remote areas will be equipped with devices, SIMs, a software solution and high quality educational content. The course for training and capacity building will be developed into video files and will be transmitted step by step according to curriculum on the phones provided to teachers. Over the course of the training period, teachers will be tested via SMS on regular basis and as an incentive, those who will score highest in tests will receive free mobile top ups. At the end of the course, test scores of all teachers will be aggregated and the passing teachers will be awarded certificate in the final workshop.

AGAHI is UNESCO implementing partner in Pakistan. A not for profit, AGAHI specializes in creating communication, information and media policy design tools, that enables the stakeholders to engage in information collaboration on knowledge-based platforms. AGAHI works in building the capacity of knowledge workers in creating content based on best practices to disseminate information in building a more integrated knowledge ecosystem.

Inveneo is proud to be an implementing partner with Creative Associates in the Tanzania 21st Century Basic Education Program (Tz21) where our role is to lead the technology intervention design and deployment with Kicheko Ltd, our Inveneo Certified ICT Partner (ICIP) in Tanzania. Together, Inveneo and Kicheko have been instrumental in introducing sustainable technology solutions that are relevant to rural Tanzanian schools that often lack electrical power and ICT skilled staff.

Recently we passed a major milestone in the program - the deployment of information and communication technologies to 5 pilot schools.

Dr. H.E. Kavishe of Kicheko, Wayan Vota and Jen Overgaag of Inveneo, assisted by a cadre of Kicheko technicians, installed a mix of laptops, desktops, LED projectors and related networking and power equipment at Naliendele, Kambarage, Darajani, and Kisiwandui Primary Schools, and Machakaeni Teacher Center.

The pilot deployment is testing technology configurations and the installation was used to train local engineers on Inveneo installation methodologies in preparation for the major ICT deployment to all schools, scheduled for early 2012.

Dr. Panda's residential house also resembles a museum with scientific innovations of different shapes and sizes stacked in every nook and cranny which proves his scientific involvement in personal life.

Innovator Panda believes that , the best thing a child can do with a toy to break it. he also believes that by Educating child in his/her choice subject/ passion a progressive nation can be built.

The shelf made scientist Dr. Panda believes that Education is a life long process whose scope is far greater than school curriculum. The moulding of models/ innovations done by hand always better than the things heard and the facts incorporated in the books.

With no agricultural background, Dr. Panda has developed unique natural bonsai in his Vijnana Bana Ashram which also shows path for earning just by uprooting and nurturing the plants which are found to be small and thumb in nature.

Dr. Panda's Scientific Endeavour and research is no doubt praise worthy. One cannot but believe his dedicated effort in simple innovation laboratory.

Social service, innovation/ inventions, writing, free technology to students for preparation of science exhibition projects, free technology to common men for their sustainability, preparation of big natural bonsai, technology for entrepreneurs and industrialists for innovative item are few works of Mihir Kumar Panda after his Government service.

. To overcome the difficulties of science and math, explanation in classes, innovator Panda has created few thousands of educational, societal and scientific innovations which helps teachers and students of the country and abroad.

Dr. Panda believes that though inventions/innovation has reached under thousands and thousands deep in the sea and high up in the space. It has reached on moon and mars, but unfortunately the sustainable inventions/innovation has not properly gone to the tiny tots and common people.

Dr. Panda is amazing and wizard of innovations and works with a principle the real scientist is he, who sees the things simply and works high.

Dr.Mihir Kumar Panda's work can be explained in short

Skeleton Crew Studio. They make very pretty items under license. The off-license stuff -- like the Thor hammers and Dr. Strange's Eye of Agamotto -- are one-offs that they make for fun. And to show off what they can do, I reckon.

It's remarkable how far the field of one-off fabrication has come, isn't it? These guys run their shop as a business. But even just the hobbyist has incredible tools for casting, plating, even 3D CNC.

For much of my youth, I seriously thought I was going to become a grain farmer. Whenever my dad would go into the field to hay/plant, I would go with him. I would play with toy tractors/implements in the sandbox and in the yard all spring, summer and fall.

I got out the old toys, they haven't been played with in probably well over 13 years, they've seen better days as they are not in the best shape anymore and some of the toys are broken.

I decided to play around in the snow, I call this "Harvest season", I got out one of my old toy Case IH toy tractors, and my Allis Chalmers combine. Oddly enough, the toy tractor is an exact replica of the tractor I use for haying each summer at the farm.

Oh how I miss my childhood.. a simpler time where a toy tractor could bring you hours of joy!

I wonder if they still make toys out of metal and rubber to this very day or if theyre all made out of plastic now.. blech!
