Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has welcomed 100 new police officers to the ranks.

Steven O’Brien, from Tameside has worked with GMP for ten years and is now moving to work in the front line as a police officer.

The 31-year old dad of one has worked in a variety of roles for the organisation including, custody detention officer for six years and working in the criminal records bureau for four years. He has also served as special constable for six years covering the Tameside area.

He said: “I’ve wanted to be a police officer from quite early on but unfortunately when I started looking ten years ago there weren’t any jobs available, so I made the decision to join the police as a civilian. I felt like I needed more experience before becoming a police officer which is why I made the move to work as a custody detention officer. I also wanted to know what it was like to work on the streets, so became a special constable.

“I feel like both of these experiences have equipped me with the knowledge and skills I need to become a successful police officer and I am proud to have achieved my dream. I am looking forward to making a difference for the community I grew up in and making it a safe place for everyone.”

The new recruits were sworn in at an attestation ceremony at Harrop Fold School last night, 14 June 2017 in the presence of Chief Constable Ian Hopkins and Deputy Chief Constable Ian Pilling and over 200 guests.

Magistrates Mike Phillips and Stephen Paine were in attendance to witness the swearing of the oath.

Family and friends of the new officers watched on proudly as each of them made an oath to uphold the office of constable with fairness, integrity, diligence and impartiality.

a day out to LONDON. Recently have not had the opportunity to visit the capital, so a treat was in store.

an image from the 'borough market'

'Pls view 'L'

a brief history.

Borough has long been synonymous with food markets and as far back as 1014, and probably much earlier, London Bridge attracted traders selling grain, fish, vegetables and livestock. In the 13th century traders were relocated to what is now Borough High Street and a market has existed there ever since.

In 1755, the market was closed by Parliament, but a group of Southwark residents raised £6,000 to buy a patch of land known locally as The Triangle, once the churchyard of St Margaret’s, and reopened the market. The Triangle, where you’ll find Northfield Farm and Furness Fish and Game, is still at the heart of the market today.

The market still feeds this core community and has grown to over 100 individual stalls. Alongside the original fruit, veg, bakers and butchers we now sell a huge variety of British and international produce.

All of our traders share a love of food and many of them make, grow or rear the produce they sell so now, just as in 1755, our customers know exactly where their shopping has come from.

The market ensures high standards of produce by employing a food quality panel of impartial experts who ensure that the taste, provenance and quality of foods sold here are all regularly measured and maintained and we support small traders to meet these standards.

With it’s vibrant and friendly atmosphere, Borough Market will always be at the heart of the local community. It's unique standing within the area has recently been marked by a Blue Plaque, voted for by the people of Southwark, marking it's place as London's Oldest Fruit & Veg Market.

According to a recent Fast Company article, design has “matured from a largely stylistic endeavor to a field tasked with solving thorny technological and social problems.” Designers are no longer relegated to the downstream position of making things look pretty. We now have a seat at the table. No longer makers, we now aspire to be leaders. Design is everywhere, yet is now called upon to respond to constantly changing technological, demographic, and environmental conditions.

In this space between ubiquity and obsolescence, how can designers develop ways of working and collaborating that respond to our contemporary world? Join us for a monthly series of provocations at MAD where practitioners and critics discuss the changing nature of design and visual culture and its impact on the also changing fields of music, education, fashion, and more.

The true measure of a successful mediator lies his ability to assist the disputants in the negotiation of a settlement while maintaining an air of impartiality and emotional detachment.

On this day in history in 1702 - 'The Daily Courant' the first British daily newspaper is published.

The paper was started by Edward Mallet, and the first edition consisted of one page in two columns that promised to “give news daily and impartially” and focused primarily on foreign news. “Courant” had the meaning of “au courant” or current. Mallet gave his address as 'against the Ditch at Fleet Street’, it was produced in rooms above a pub, the White Hart. The Daily Courant helped to establish the principal of regular news provision, the first in a long line that has ended with rolling 24 hour news channels. There had been regular newspapers before The Daily Courant, one of which - The Courant, published first in 1621 nearly shared its name.

In spite of changes of ownership and a brush with Parliament in April 1712 for the heinous crime of publishing details of debates there. Even in the 1700s, it was necessary to be careful. It was seen, at the time, as possibly deleterious to the Crown. Recklessness and misuse of information might undercut authority. In fact, the April 12, 1712 edition of The Daily Courant caused the Crown to notice the little paper and bring a suit of malicious libel against the press.

The Daily Courant continued in print until 1735, when it was swallowed up by a competitor, The Daily Gazetteer, possibly on government orders. It has been stated by no less authority than Prince Charles, The Daily Courant was “the victim of the swing of a ministerial axe.” Mallet sold The Daily Courant to Samuel Buckley, who moved it to premises in the area of Little Britain in London, at "the sign of the Dolphin". Buckley later became the printer of The Spectator.

Europe’s first newspaper came in 1556 when the Venetian government began printing a monthly edition. These were handwritten and passed from person to person. The German’s first paper came in 1605 while the Dutch followed in 1618. The Dutch paper came as a folio, or single page printed. The first English language paper was printed in Amsterdam in 1620. The paper was printed in England in 1621 and was filled with news from the Continent. The first successful daily paper was The Daily Courant.

"The ground having been all prepared and preliminaries of the game all settled, and the betting all made, and the goods all 'staked' night came on … a procession of lighted flambeaux was seen coming from each encampment, to the ground where the players assembled around their respective byes; and at the beat of the drums and chants of the women, each party of players commenced the 'ball-play dance.' Each party danced for a quarter of an hour around their respective byes, in their ball-play dress; rattling their ball-sticks together in the most violent manner, and all singing as loud as they could raise their voices; while the women of each party, who had their goods at stake, formed into two rows on the line between the two parties of players, and danced also, in an uniform step, and all their voices joined in chants to the Great Spirit; in which they were soliciting his favor in deciding the game to their advantage; and also encouraging the players to exert every power they possessed, in the struggle that was to ensue. In the mean time, four old medicine-men, who were to have the starting of the ball, and who were to be judges of the play, were seated at the point where the ball was to be started; and busily smoking to the Great Spirit for their success in judging rightly, and impartially, between the parties in so important an affair" (Letters and Notes, vol. 2, p. 125, pl. 224).

Sketched near Fort Gibson in 1834. Catlin produced a lively rhythm in the ball-play scenes by repeating the pose of figures engaged in a similar action.

The subject is repeated in plate 22 of Catlin's North American Indian Portfolio, first published in 1844, and in cartoon 175. The Schweitzer copy lacks Catlin's animated touch.

Get Smart and save money.

True blue toddler Thomas Bannister scored a winner at an event to help people in Knowsley save money on their fuel bills.

The three year old pulled the winning raffle ticket at an Energy Smart event in Kirkby and won a football signed by all the players from his beloved, Everton.

Lucky Thomas was with his aunty Alison McNally at the event in St Chad’s Parade, which dealt with how to cut the cost of heating and lighting your home.

There was information on what heating benefits people might be entitled to and how to use energy savings to stay out of debt. There were also give-aways and goodie bags.

“The warmer weather can be a good time to do the sort of work on your house that might help you save heat in the winter,” said Cllr David Lonergan, Knowsley’s cabinet member for regeneration, economy and skills.

“Many people could be entitled to extra cash help to insulate their homes or they might be eligible to go on to a lower tariff for their bills.

“It’s not just people who are retired or on low incomes that struggle with rising fuel bills - it’s a challenge for everyone and that’s why this event was open to all.

“There are simple things that everyone can do to, such as switching off lights and switching down radiator thermostats, but we also wanted to make people aware of how to eat well when the weather changes and what benefits they can get to help with fuel bills.”

Hundreds of people came along to talk to experts from the council’s Housing team and Health and Wellbeing service, Knowsley’s Unemployed Centre, the Citizens Advice Bureau, Age Concern, Merseytravel and pensioners groups.

If you would like to know more about how to reduce your energy bills or to make your finances go further in general call Kate Fisher, the Financial Inclusion Manager in Knowsley’s Financial Inclusion Team on 443 4779.

This book contains a contemporary review of Burn's Edinburgh edition of poems.

EXTRACT (from page 79-80):

"Poems, chiefly in the Scottish Dialect. By Robert Burns. 8vo. 6s. Edinb. Creech.

By general report we learn, that R. B. is a plough boy of small education, but blessed by nature with a powerful genius. His subjects are not, as might have been expected, confined to the objects which surround him: he is satirical as well as pastoral, and humorous as well as elegiac. Thus he speaks of a certain great character:

For you, young Potentate of W...

It is greatly to be lamented that these poems are "chiefly in the Scottish dialect", as it must necessarily confine their beauties to a small circle of readers, and as the author has given good specimens of his skill in the English; probably in the humorous pieces the spirit might evaporate with the dialect; but in the serious compositions we should have been more highly gratified had the language been of a piece with the following stanza, which we quote not only as very elegant, but highly poetical: O happy love! where love like this is found!...

We are happy to observe prefixed to this collection of natural genius and strong sense, a lift of subscribers, at once so numerous and respectable as to do honour to the author's countrymen, and whose bounty we will trust will enable him to preserve that independence of mind, and to indulge himself in those flights of imagination which he appears to possess in an eminent degree, and which constitute the genuine poet of nature."

Central wholesale markets, established by local governments under the Wholesale Market Law, sell fresh foods indispensable to out daily life such as fish, vegetables, fruit, meat and flowers. It is difficult to store perishable foods for a long period as the spoil easily. In addition, the production of perishables is greatly affected by natural conditions such as the weather, so the price is subject to greater fluctuation than other goods. So the wholesale market, standing between producers and consumers, promotes the smooth distribution of perishables and contributes to stabilization of diet through the fair and speedy transactions between wholesalers and jobbers in the clean and functional facilities.

Role The Central Wholesale Market Law of 1923 has laid the foundation of the wholesale market system in Japan. The Law was revised in 1971 and the present Wholesale Market Law was newly promulgated to cope with the succeeding social changes.

The present system of wholesale market in Japan has two features: (1) Local governments found and manage their central wholesale markets. (2) Prices are fixed on the basis of auction regardless of volume of transaction. This is an unique system around the world; the law restricts transactions in the markets to maintain impartiality.

Before central wholesale markets were established, although auction had been held partially in vegetable markets, most prices had been negotiated in secret between sellers and buyers. It sometimes caused unfair transactions and placed producers and consumers under disadvantages.

The principle of public auction established by the Central Wholesale Market Law had a marked effect on distribution of perishable foods: fair prices and proper transactions are ensured. Thus, thanks to the central wholesale market, producers and consumers have become able to supply or consume perishable foods without anxiety.

Police staff, former military personnel, prison staff and office workers make up the varied backgrounds of Greater Manchester Police’s new officers.

Yesterday GMP welcomed 96 new recruits to the Force. The officers were officially sworn in at a formal ceremony attended by the Chief Constable, senior officers and magistrate Joan Cooper.

Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said: “Our region is made up of people from a range of backgrounds, cultures and ethnicities which is why it’s wonderful to see our workforce now becoming a reflection of this.

“By having an organisation which mirrors our community we are able to strengthen the ties we already have with the public and instil a better understanding of the needs and demands across the region.”

The attestation ceremony was held at Stockport Town Hall on Tuesday 5 June. Family and friends watched the new officers make their oath to uphold their role with fairness, integrity, diligence and impartiality throughout their time in post.

New recruits have to complete a two year probation period which includes classroom based learning and a year of active patrol. During their training they will have the same of level of authority as regular officers, including the power of arrest.

Chief Constable Ian Hopkins added: “Neighbourhood policing is at the heart of our philosophy which is why it is so important to hold these ceremonies within the community.

“Our new recruits will join their colleagues in dealing with challenging situations in order to ensure the safety and security of the public. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for choosing to become a part of our police family and wish them every success in their future careers.”

Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime Beverley Hughes said: “I want to congratulate all of our recruits who have taken part in tonight’s attestation ceremony. It is a celebration of the hard work and dedication that each of our new police constables has put in to prepare themselves for their new roles. I would like to welcome them all into the police service.

“Policing is one of the most fundamental public services upon which our citizens depend, and they will play a vital role in keeping people safe.

“In Greater Manchester we pride ourselves on our diverse cultures and communities that this new generation of police officers will now be working closely with across the city region. I wish you all the very best in your future careers with GMP.”

The new recruits are replacing those who have either retired or left the organisation and therefore helping GMP to maintain current officer numbers.

Today, we look at the survivor of Amazon shipping disaster, Transformers Earthrise: Snapdragon.

Snapdragon is the second of two Horrorcons to be reimagined by Hasbro/Takara for the modern age of Transformers., with the other being Apeface who was released as part of the Siege lineup in Fall 2019. While the personality of the pair different depending on the continuity, this much remains constant - this pair of Decepticons are Headmaster Triplechangers, with questionable animal modes.

Like with Apeface, this iteration of the character brings that G1 nostalgia along with improvements to the actual engineering behind the toy, and updated Technobabble. Instead of a Headmaster, the little figure is called a Titan Master, but is still named Krunk after the G1 character. The overall shape of the figure, colours, alt modes, face, and so on are instantaneous recognizable to us Old Timers

I keep forgetting to mention this, but in addition to the figure and weapons, each box has a "decoder strip" which is a throwback to the G1 toy days, where you'd put a red piece of plastic up against the Tech Specs on the back of the box to get the characters vital stats. These days, it's used to decode some message that I believe unlocks stuff on a website.

As far as I can tell, Snapdragon is the first use of this particular mould, which is always nice. Two of the biggest issues I had with Apeface appear to be resolved here. The first being that Apeface had no waist, which is absolutely insane for a Voyager sized figure in this day and age. The other problem was that for some reason the plastic quality was inferior to the rest of the Siege line, which is not the case anymore. Plastics feel stiffer and aren't a pearl finish, which overall seems to allow for better tolerances, as well as the detailing on the figure to actually show up.

There is technically a third point, but that's with the Battle Damage paint apps. Some people like them. Some people don't. I'm impartial.

Articulation and range of motion on Snapdragon are pretty much what you'd expect (ankles, knees, thigh twist, hip, waist, shoulders, forearm pivot, and head - there is no useful wrist articulation). So, again you'll get your run of the mill action poses, but with a toy that do something other than stand around and look pretty).

Paint work is... alright. Smaller figure and lower price point means fewer apps as compared to Doubledealer whom I looked at last. It's serviceable, and honestly with no real official art work or Takara version to tell me otherwise, I can only presume that this is the artistic vision of the figure come to life.

When it comes to a Transformer, build quality is always the biggest thing as poor QC can result in a warped looking figure or misaligned limbs, and in the past this has always been an issue when talking about Hasbro vs Takara. Well, if this unified product thing has done one thing right, it's that I find despite having more complicated transformations and more moving parts, I find that the figures hold together much better than before, and the joints/finishes on the piece generally aren't bad either.

Transformation to Jet mode and then Dragon mode are fairly intuitive, especially compared to Apeface. At the end of the day, while I like stupidly complicated transformations, if a simple one can get the job done, so be it. On the whole, it's pretty typical for a Voyager size figure. After all they can't all be as intricate as Springer.

That about does it for Snapdragon. I was worried he would disappoint me as much as Apeface did, but I'm glad that money was put towards addressing the biggest issues that I had with that release. An easy recommend if you're into Headmasters and if, like me, you never got around to playing with one in the 80s.

At this time, I still have the two Arcee's on preorder (which are way late), and still no ability to preorder Sky Lynx and Scorponok. It's been a very strange year to say the least, but I would have thought I would have had the ability to at least preorder things.

Oh well... things will happen when the time is right. Besides, I've got a bunch of other things to tinker with in the meantime.

Bearing Witness in the Case of Mumia Abu-Jamal

SAT, MARCH 11, 2023 2-4PM

First United Methodist Church of Germantown, Philadelphia

Evidence of Abu-Jamal’s innocence was illegally withheld by prosecutors at his trial and subsequent appeals

Will Judge Lucretia Clemons have the impartiality and independence to make a decision that reckons with the long history of racism in Philadelphia?

The case of Black journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal, falsely convicted in 1982 of the murder of police officer Daniel Faulkner the year before is now back in court. Newly discovered evidence, previously withheld by prosecutors, a clear violation of law, makes it clear that Abu-Jamal should be freed or given a new trial. Abu-Jamal has endured over 40 years of wrongful imprisonment and almost three decades on death row.

Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas Judge, Lucretia Clemons, is expected to rule by March 16, 2023, on whether newly-found documents pointing to Abu-Jamal’s innocence are worthy of an evidentiary hearing where they can be properly reviewed and examined.

The court is reviewing three sets of documents that the prosecution withheld from Abu-Jamal’s attorneys for more than 36 years: 1) Handwritten notes by prosecutor Joe McGill that show that he tracked the race of potential jurors during the jury selection process; 2) A handwritten letter by star witness, Robert Chobert, in which he asks prosecutor Joe McGill for money “owed” him, an indication that Chobert’s testimony was bribed, and 3) A series of memoranda between prosecutors and officers of the judicial system in and outside of the state of Pennsylvania, indicating that the prosecutor’s other main witness, Cynthia White, was also bribed. Just months after her testimony at Abu-Jamal’s trial, all of White’s pending prostitution charges were suddenly dismissed.

Failure to release Robert Chobert’s letter and the series of memoranda between the prosecutor and numerous officers of the court across state lines is a flagrant violation of the 1963 landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling in the case of Brady v. Maryland. Brady established that prosecutors MUST turn over to defense attorneys, all potential evidence pointing to a defendant’s innocence.

Prosecutors in District Attorney Larry Krasner’s office who are currently litigating Abu-Jamal’s case today are arguing, against all reason, that Robert Chobert’s letter demanding money owed to him as well as all the memoranda seeking favorable treatment for Cynthia White are not “materially important” and that, therefore, the Brady claim is not merited in Abu-Jamal’s case. They argue that Abu-Jamal would have been convicted with or without the testimony of these witnesses.

1

But the other “evidence” used to convict Abu-Jamal mainly consisted of a made-up confession allegedly heard by police and their claim that Abu-Jamal’s gun was found next to him at the scene, but which police failed to test to prove it had been fired. The alleged confession was “remembered” two to three months after the fact by police, among them one who wrote in his report about Abu-Jamal the night of the shooting, “the negro male made no comment.” Both claims were made by the very same police officers who beat Abu-Jamal brutally, within an inch of his life, shouting “Kill the Black motherfucker, beat the shit out of the Black motherfucker,” and lied on the stand about having properly handled the crime scene, while in fact the police did the opposite.

DA Larry Krasner’s office is, thereby upholding the perjured testimonies and theory of the case put forth by the same homicidally violent police officers whose behavior, according to an investigation of the Philadelphia Police by the U.S. Department of Justice in 1979, “shocks the conscience.”

The narrative of what happened on the night that Office Faulkner was killed promoted by Larry Krasner’s office and the racist Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) is false.

In fact, the original prosecutor in the case had to bribe the testimonies of key witnesses, Chobert and White, because they did not see what happened that night, as long-standing evidence shows. The newly discovered evidence is “material” because the original trial court heavily relied on their bribed testimony to convict Abu-Jamal. If jurors would have known that Chobert and White were, respectively, paid and relieved of prison time in exchange for their testimonies, the jury would have doubted the prosecutor’s theory of the case. And the fact that this new evidence of bribery was withheld for almost four decades by Philadelphia prosecutors requires throwing Abu-Jamal’s conviction out, or at the very least, holding an evidentiary hearing.

Before a crowd of well over 150 people, in addition to livestream watch parties in the US and overseas, our event brought together eminent scholars, experts, and activists who bore witness to constitutional violations in a case that is emblematic of how the prosecutor’s office operates and disfigures the lives of Black people, their families, and communities in Philadelphia. Participants included Cornel West, who testified to the cruel and inhumane nature of death row’s solitary confinement and death by incarceration; recently retired Arkansas state judge, Rev. Wendell Griffin, who addressed Brady; professor and social critic, Dr. Marc Lamont Hill; Abu-Jamal’s friend and defense team liaison, Dr. Johanna Fernandez; and Michael Shiffmann described photographer Pedro Polakoff''s photographs which, among other things, documents the absence of cab driver Robert Chobert from the crime scene.

The evidence that justice was not done in Mumia’s case and that federal law was violated is overwhelming. Will Judge Clemons of the CCP listen to it and do the right thing?

Got Sachi sporting some premium Yusuke Urameshi fashion. ;P Who do you think wears it better? xD

Character Ramblings:

In the case of my stories/RPs with Sachi, she is the eldest daughter of Hiei and my other (and likely oldest/still actively used) OC, Riyo Sokai. If it isn’t obvious already, they’re all based in the Yu Yu Hakusho universe. xD

Sachi is also the person that takes over Spirit Detective duties after Yusuke (whom is her main mentor, though she learns a lot from the whole crew as she grows up, so she’s got a pretty well-rounded “jack of all trades, master of none” type of power set). She’s also only one quarter human (Hiei is obviously a fullblown demon, and Riyo is half-human with a demon mother and human/psychic father).

King Yama is no longer leading Spirit World (thanks to all the horrific bullshit he has pulled) by the time Sachi is chosen to work for them, and instead Koenma is the head honcho. While she was chosen partly because of the relationships she has with the previous detective and the friends that helped him out, and thus knows a lot about the shit that a spirit detective can get into, she was also chosen because of her strength, level-headedness, and impartial attitude regarding supernatural beings vs humans. Sachi grew up around both humans and demons and even spent chunks of her childhood in Demon World (and goes to visit it throughout her life), so she’s pretty knowledgable about the lifestyles and general attitudes of those that live in either world. Definitely one of the most qualified peacekeepers Spirit World has picked out. xD

In her case, things are generally pretty peaceful compared to Yusuke’s days. She usually acts as a mediator more often than not, though she is fully trained and prepared to deal with full blown battles.

In the past I’ve shipped her with Ichigo Kurosaki from Bleach, but now-a-days he’s simply an ex-boyfriend from her high school days (break-up was sad, but amicable—they wanted different things from their adult lives and all that). Into her adulthood, she ends up meeting sweaty man extraordinaire Reigen Arataka from Mob Psycho 100, and at this point I feel like they’re definitely endgame. c:

She ends up playing a teaching role to Shigeo (similar to how Yusuke was that for her). Not so much to make him stronger since he’s already plenty strong, but moreso to steadily gain better control of his psychic abilities. He still calls Reigen “Master”, but he calls Sachi “Teacher”. IT’S GREAT AND I LOVE IT.

and yeah idk i just felt like talking about sachi don’t at me.

Been tempted to make Reigen into a doll since I’m a hoe for doll couples, but I’m currently taking a break from adding new dolls to the crew. There IS one sculpt I found that’s kinda Reigen-y, but it’s not particularly popular so I can’t find any owner images of him…plus I’m not terribly into the Souldoll Kid bodies…hmmmmmmm.

As in an average family, the Frank family photo album begins with the birth of their daughters (Margot in 1926 and Anne in 1929). There is nothing in these photographs to even hint at the horrors that Anne and her family would later endure. What we know about Anne's fate has a direct effect on how her book Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl is perceived. Equally so, it is now impossible to view these family photos with an impartial eye. The exhibition Anne Frank: A Private Photo Album is comprised of 70 photographs taken by Otto Frank with his Leica camera between 1926 and the summer of 1942, first in Frankfurt and then in Amsterdam. Through the lens of his Leica, Otto explores the unlimited possibilities of photography while recording his daughters' childhood. His photographs provide viewers with insight into the personalities of Anne and Margot and add an extra dimension to the story of the Holocaust: how a once happy family is destined to come to a cruel and horrific end. This exhibition is presented in partnership with The Anne Frank Center USA.

What is it that stops refs applying the laws of the game? Minor pushes outside the area are free kicks but a major crime inside is usually ignored. Referee Hooper was fine, impartial, and it was no way a dirty game. Once we got ahead and their big blokes tired the result never felt in any doubt. But Maupay does suffer an awful lot of this sort of over-intimate attention.

On Saturday 5 August, activists gathered in central London to protest the ongoing brutal and illegal occupation of Jammu and Kashmir by India and its use of extrajudicial killings, forced disappearances, intimidation and censorship to maintain its control.

Many of those present were also angry at Britain's continued support of India and failure to take action in support of the Kashmiri people's struggle for independence. India has forcibly occupied the region for over 75 years in open defiance of UN resolutions calling for a fair and impartial plebiscite under UN auspices to determine the area's status.

The protest marked four years since the Indian government, on 5 August 2019, revoked the autonomy of Jammu and Kashmir, previously guaranteed by the constitution, and instead imposed direct rule from Delhi. As Human Rights Watch (HRW) reported, "The government action was accompanied by serious rights violations including arbitrary detention of hundreds of people, a total communications blackout and severe restrictions on freedom of movement and peaceful assembly."

www.hrw.org/news/2022/08/02/india-repression-persists-jam...

In their most recent report on Jammu and Kashmir, HRW noted that "the government's repressive policies and failure to investigate and prosecute alleged security force abuses have increased insecurity among Kashmiris," and added that "journalists in Kashmir face increasing harassment by security forces, including raids and arbitrary arrests on terrorism charges. Authorities in India have shut down the internet more often than anywhere else in the world. A majority of those shutdowns have been in Kashmir, where they are used to curb protests and access to information."

www.hrw.org/news/2022/08/02/india-repression-persists-jam...

Enforced disappearances also continue as freelance journalist Mir Aiyaz reported in Fair Planet (23 February 2023). He interviewed Khera Begum about the arrest of her son, Abdul Rashid Dar, by over forty Indian army soldiers, with no police officer attending as is legally required. An officer reportedly told his older brother, Shabir, that the police had been "informed" and that he would be released the next morning. He was not. When the family and other locals went to enquire at the nearest army base, initially they were asked to return later, and then eventually told that he had "escaped from custody." As Aiyaz notes

'Rashid's family and community members do not believe the army's version of events. "How can a man escape in the presence of ever vigilant army men?" rued Shabir. "He was too meek a person to escape, and there was no possibility of running away in the forest where he was taken."

It seems equally difficult to believe that if the army had openly stated its intention to hold him for just 24 hours, that he would have risked everything on attempting to flee.

Aiyaz observes that 'locals, particularly youths living in Kunan Poshpora have altered their daily habits due to their fear of being abducted,' and he quotes a student who while 'staring at the fenced playground (of a school), which used to be brimming with kids but has recently been mostly desolate,' told him that "boys head home after the maghrib prayers, and time spent in the playground has been slashed down."

www.fairplanet.org/story/whats-behind-the-forced-disappea...

The Indian Army has deployed a huge military force in Jammu and Kashmir which some estimates suggest might be as high as 900,000 troops. One soldier for every eight civilians. According to journalist Munir Akram writing in the Pakistan Observer (6 August 2023), the Indian military has "perpetrated a vicious campaign of repressive actions, including extrajudicial killings of innocent Kashmiris in fake encounters, custodial killings and "cordon-and-search" operations; use of pellet guns to kill, maim and blind peaceful protestors, abduction and enforced disappearances and "collective punishments," with the destruction and burning of entire villages and urban neighborhoods.'

www.eureporter.co/world/pakistan/2023/08/06/seminar-on-hu...

Despite India's ongoing brutal occupation of Jammu and Kashmir and despite the continued tension and risk of war with Pakistan, Britain continues to grant licenses for the export of arms to both Pakistan and India.

On 23 February 2023, Politico reported that in the wake of the Ukraine war, 'Britain's defense and aerospace firms now see an opportunity to chip away at Russia's share (of India's military imports)', adding that 'Rolls-Royce and BAE Systems are part of a delegation to Aero India, Asia's biggest airshow which is taking place this week.'

The same report also seemed to suggest that rather than attempt to limit arms exports to maintain some leverage on the shocking human rights situation in Jammu and Kashmir and limit the arms race between the two regional nuclear powers - India and her neighbour Pakistan, the British government appears instead intent on promoting arms exports to India. According to Politico, "Last year the UK put India on its defense equipment fast-track - the first such move offered to an Indo-Pacific nation - in a shift that will reduce red tape and shorten delivery times for defense procurement."

www.politico.eu/article/india-pursues-russian-military-bu...

It should also be noted that the United Kingdom is already one of India's largest suppliers of weapons. According to the UK House of Commons Library arms exports update in January 2023, on a "10 year rolling basis the UK is Europe's largest and the world's second largest defence exporter' beaten only by the United States (p10) and the report ranks India as the fourth largest importer of arms from the UK after Saudi Arabia, Oman and the United States, based on arms transfers between 2012 and 2021. (p21).

“The biggest challenges facing Afghanistan now is how it is going to experience the transition both the security transition and the political transition,” said Mr. Haysom in his meeting with Kunduz elders.

“If the election goes badly it seems to us, it may provoke the crises,” said Mr. Haysom

“The UN is our hope and we have a lot of expectations from the UN,” Utmanzai added.

You can remove these vendors from view prior to taking your snapshot by opening up your Advanced menu (if you don’t have it revealed already, it’s control+alt+shift+d on a PC and command+alt+shift+d on a Mac), select Rendering>Hide Selected. Then right click>edit each prim from the vendor (there are usually 5 in total) to erase them from view on your screen.

- Photo-editing IS permitted as long as the content is recognizably taken on Organica sim. Understandably, not all viewpoints and shots will be optimal and you may wish to tweak your visual treatments. This is fine!

An image produced by one of the Force's photographers to illustrate forced marriage.

Forced marriage is a criminal offence and is:

"A marriage conducted without the valid consent of one or both parties, where duress is a factor".

Duress can include physical, sexual, emotional, and financial and psychological pressure. This will include coercion and deception to force someone into marrying.

Forced marriages are a form of domestic abuse and are dealt with as such by the police.

Forced marriages are where one or both persons involved get forced into a marriage that they do not want to enter and do not consent to the marriage.

Sometimes it is parents forcing their child to get married or sometimes it can be the extended family or community

It can happen between people in this country or between someone from this country with someone abroad.

How do arranged marriages differ from forced marriages?

Where the families of both parties take a leading role in arranging the marriage, but the choice as to whether or not to accept the arrangement remains with the prospective spouses.

Which communities do forced marriages happen in?

We are aware it happens in many communities and we want to encourage communities to understand that this is force and to be confident enough to report to the police.

Victims

Forced marriage is primarily, but not exclusively, an issue of violence against women. Most cases involve young women and girls aged between 13 and 30 years, although there is evidence to suggest that as many as 15 per cent of victims are male.

It is felt that men may still be a reluctant to report to the police that they have been forced into a marriage.

We are aware that there are a number of cases going unreported and we hope to encourage more reporting by raising awareness of the issues.

Click here if you want to navigate away from this site quickly.

How can police help?

We want to encourage potential victims and those already in a forced marriage to seek support and help from the police. We have specialist officers who can deal with the issues and they will help and support you throughout the process.

Obviously we understand that many victims do not want to criminalise family members and may be reluctant to call the police; however we would encourage you to do so if this is the only way to get you out of the situation and so that we can offer you some support and protection.

Foreign and Commonwealth assistance

The Forced Marriage Unit at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office are also available to help and advice you and they can be contacted on 0207 008 0151 or email: fmu@fco.gov.uk

In particular the FCO can help to repatriate you back to this country if you have been forced into a marriage abroad. It is important that you don’t feel like there is no one there to help you.

Reporting a Forced Marriage

We will respect the victim's wishes, respect confidentiality, establish lines of communication and provide appropriate support and guidance via a number of support agencies.

You can report a forced marriage via the normal means of communicating with GMP listed on the Contact Us page. Always call 999 in an emergency where there is a threat to life of a crime in progress. In a non-emergency, call 101.

In addition we have Specialist Domestic Abuse Investigators on each division or by calling 0161 872 5050.

Police Response

Forced marriages are a legitimate issue to report to the police. We will support and protect the victim and investigate criminal offences.

Situations whereby a forced marriage may come to the attention of the police include:

An individual who fears they may be forced to marry.

A report by a third party of an individual having been taken abroad for the purpose of a forced marriage.

An individual who has already been forced to marry either in this country or abroad or to someone from abroad.

The Legal Position

Forced Marriage is a criminal offence

This legislation came into effect on 16 June 2014. For further information on the legislation click: www.cps.gov.uk/legal/h_to_k/forced_marriage_and_honour_ba...

Forced Marriage Protection Orders (Civil Protection Act 2007)

A Forced Marriage Protection order can be made by a Family Court in order to protect victims, both adults and children of a potential forced marriage or people who are already in a forced marriage. This is a legal document issued by a judge designed to protect individuals according to their particular circumstances. It contains legally binding conditions and directions that require a change in the behavior of a person or persons trying to force another person into marriage.

Forced Marriage Protection Orders may be made to prevent a forced marriage from occurring, to stop intimidation and violence, to reveal the whereabouts of a person, to stop somebody from being taken abroad, to hand over passports etc.

A breach of any of the conditions is a criminal offence. www.cps.gov.uk/legal/h_to_k/forced_marriage_and_honour_ba...

You can find out more about forced marriage protection orders here.

Safety Advice

If you really don’t want to talk to the police or other agencies then please think about the following safety advice if you think you may be forced into a marriage in this country or abroad:

Keep a copy of your passport including dual nationality passports.

Tell a trusted friend if you are travelling abroad and give them addresses of where you will be staying and also details of your return flight so they can alert the police if you fail to return on that date.

Have a spare mobile to hand that you can be contacted on and leave the number with trusted people so you are contactable

Memorise police phone numbers, and/or email addresses of the Forced Marriage unit and trusted friends in case you have to call them in an emergency.

March for Science Protest.

Science is impartial. Imposing fake ideals in lieu of listening is burying your head in the sand and thinking you have the omnipotence to work the world in your own image instead of using the tools you were given. "You must pay for everything in this world, one way and another. There is nothin' free, except the grace of God."

Downtown, San Jose, California

Practicing with makeup and trying new outfits while traveling. I arrived at the resort on the weekend before the week-long conference and had the weekend to practice. I took many photos that weekend, and surprisingly most of them turned out very well, so there are 38 (out of 61) photos in this series! (Photo selection was done by two impartial reviewers.)

This is the business outfit. (I was 'into' the color fuchsia at the time.) I did not wear this outfit out at the resort because I thought it was too dressy for a weekend look. Turns out there was a business woman convention at the resort that weekend and I would have fit right in!
